Mayor’s MessageOn behalf of our residents, I extend a very warm welcome from the
community of Logan Lake. We encourage you to come to Logan Lake to “Discover our Nature” and enjoy the many wonderful all-season outdoor recreational opportunities we have to offer!
Logan Lake is a progressive, family-oriented community that provides a safe and secure environment. We have both a high school and an elementary school in town, and for post secondary education Thompson Rivers University is located in Kamloops. Logan Lake has great tasting, safe water; a recreation centre, including an arena for hockey and curling; many neighbourhood parks; and sound municipal infrastructure, public roads, and utilities.
We have become a leading example of what a FireSmart community can look like by developing one of the fi rst Community Wildfi re Protection Plans in the province. In addition to protecting the community from wildfi re, these efforts have allowed the community to build an extensive trail network that is continually being improved upon.
Our residents also live in Logan Lake because they enjoy our diverse recreational opportunities that include cross country skiing, snowmobiling, curling, hockey, fi shing and ice fi shing, golfi ng, hiking, ATV riding, and biking. Recently, the community has added the 18-hole Copper Ridge Disc Golf Course, and a new state-of-the-art Bike Skills Park for our youth.
Our many community events attract visitors from all over the country. A
few winter events include the Polar Carnival, Western Cup of Pond Hockey Tournament, Logan Lake Loop Speed Skating event, and our unique winter “Polarathon” triathlon. Summer events include Canada Day celebrations, Logan Lake Days, the Lions Lobsterfest, Highland Valley Copper Open House, Little Britches Rodeo, ATV BC and many, many more.
Our town is a place where people call home, and where visitors become friends. Our municipality is a place where people volunteer, where people care about their neighbours. We are small-town Canada and we are 2,073 residents strong; we are built on an industry of rich natural resources and the even richer resource of hard-working people.
Today, nestled in the heart of the highland valley, Logan Lake is a thriving community. We are growing with both residential and commercial developments. We are known as a place where recreation and nature meet, attracting a myriad of people looking for a peaceful, rural, active lifestyle.
So if you are here for a visit, staying at our municipal campground on the lake, attending an event, or looking for your next home, I extend a personal invitation to you to contact our municipal offi ce at (250) 523-6225 and I would be pleased to take you on a tour of our friendly community. www.loganlake.ca.

The Logan Lake Campground is just outside of Logan Lake and a short walk on a paved pathway along the lakeshore takes you right into town. The campground is located on the shore of the lake and has a

FISHING IN LOGAN LAKELogan Lake is at the heart of a series of world-class trout fi shing lakes and, be-cause of the efforts of the community, they provide the opportunity to catch large fi sh consistently. The lake is a small one at twelve hectares in size, but because of the two aerators, spawning channel, stocking activities and plentiful food, it supports a large population of trout. Five-pound trout are a regular catch in Logan Lake, withsome getting as big as ten pounds. The quota for trout in Logan Lake is two and only electric motors are permitted. Logan Lake also provides great fl y fi shing. There are two docks; one on the southwest side of the lake where the town is located and other on the northeast side of the lake at the campground. These docks provide plen-ty of space for the fi shermen and women who come to enjoy Logan Lake’s exciting fi shing environment. If you are looking for variety, there are more than a dozen fi shable lakes within half an hour of Logan Lake, some with challenging four-by-four or hiking access only while others are easily accessible, like Logan Lake. There are numerous fi shing lodges in the area that can provideaccommodations, boat rentals and tips on fi shing locations and conditions.Check out www.visitloganlake.ca formore information.

BIG OK (ISLAND) LAKEThis lake is a heavily populated catch–and-release, fl y-fi shing spot. As a result, some big trout (up to 5 kg) are caught annually.
BILLY LAKEBilly Lake is located on a four-wheel-drive road north of Chataway Lake. The nutrient-rich lake usually produces well through the summer months for small Rainbow on a fl y or by spin-casting. For the fl y anglers, try a shrimp, dragonfl y or leech pattern.
BOSE LAKELocated north of Highway 97C on Bose Lake Road, Bose lake has a small forest service site with camping and boat launch. This high-elevation lake offers good fi shing for Rainbow trout up to 1 kg in size on a fl y. Rainbow are stocked annually at the 30-hectare lake.
CALLING LAKEThis 30-hectare, high-elevation lake is comprised of dark, nutrient-rich waters and is stocked periodically. The lake produces well for Rainbow trout up to 1 kg in size throughout the spring and fall. When trolling, use a gang troll or leech pattern; for fl y-fi shing, use a shrimp pattern.
DAIRY LAKEThis 25-hectare lake is located east of Greenstone Mountain. The lake is best fi shed by trolling, although fl y-fi shing can be effective at times. There is a boat launch at the forest service site on the northeast shore.
DESMOND LAKELocated west of Highway 5 on the Surrey Lake Forest Road (rough road conditions) just south of Meadow Creek Road, this 25-hectare lake has spotty fi shing for Rainbow trout to 1 kg.
DOMINIC LAKEThis 35-hectare lake is located north of Face Lake on the Paska Lake Road (four wheel drive recommended). The lake offers good fi shing for stocked Rainbow to 1 kg, best caught by fl y-fi shing (attractor patterns) or trolling (gang troll). There is an undeveloped campsite on the east end of the lake as well as a resort with camping facilities.
FACE LAKELocated north of Highway 97C on Paska Lake road (four wheel drive recommended), this 60-acre stocked lake is best trolled. A forest service site lies on the north end of the lake offering a boat launch, as well as camping facilities.
GUMP LAKEThe 20-acre Gump Lake contains stocked Rainbow trout that can reach 2 kg in size. This shallow, clear lake is accessed by hiking the deactivated roads from the Witch’s Brook Road. Fly-fi shing is the preferred method of fi shing with the chironomid and mayfl y hatches to the mid-June sedge hatch being the best times to catch.
MAMIT LAKEOn Highway 97C between Logan Lake and Merritt, Mamit Lake is accessed by paved roads and is a fair fi shing lake for Rainbow trout reaching 2 kg. Mamit has a boat launch on the east side of the lake.
PASKA LAKEThis lake has a boat launch and camping facilities at a small forest service site on its northwestern shore. This lake produces Rainbow up to 1 kg that are caught throughout the spring and fall by trolling a fl atfi sh or leech pattern or by casting a damselfl y or attractor fl y.
TUNKWA LAKEA very popular lake in the region, Tunkwa has fair numbers of Rainbow that can grow up to 3 kg. It is stocked heavily and is best fi shed using a fl y or by trolling in the spring or fall since the lake is subject to draw down in the summer. For patient fl y anglers, the early June damselfl y hatch and the spring chironomid hatch are probably the best times to fi sh. Several amenities can be found at the resort located on the northeast side of the lake.
TUPPER LAKEAccessed by a four-wheel-drive road north of Cathaway Lake, Tupper offers good Rainbow trout fi shing thoughout the spring and fall. It is best to use a fl y (attractor type pattern) or by spin-casting a small lure with bait for the stocked trout. There is a forest service site complete with a boat launch on the lake.
WALLOPER LAKEWalloper Lake is a popular family lake with good shoreline fi shing. Its dark, nutrient-rich waters produce many small Rainbow trout that can easily be caught. The lake is aerated in the winter to prevent winter-kill and ice fi shing is not recommended. Picnicking, a wharf and boat launch facilities are found at the provincial park.

Although summer temperatures can sometimes soar upwards of 30°C, Meadow Creek’s sub-alpine setting usually means cooler conditions than in most interior valleys, making it a great retreat from the mid-summer heat. The course has some hilly terrain, a wicked dogleg, and a creek that runs through it. There are membership opportunities for Highland Valley Copper Mine workers and contractors, out-of- town residents and seniors. There are themes throughout the week that encourage golfers of all ages and abilities to come out and have fun on the course. Nicola working at Highland Valley Copper. Teck began a series of upgrades to the mine including improvements to the rock mill that, when fi nished, will increase the effi ciency and profi tability of the mine.Highland Valley Copper is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which allows for continual, ongo-ing shifts. The last time the mine shut down was in 1998-99, when the price of copper dropped sig-nifi cantly. The mine was closed for six months, but resumed operations once copper prices rose again.Every day, the mine turns out about 900 tonnes of copper concentrate and about 10 tonnes of molybde-num concentrate.
Copper produces consistently at the mine, and the available molyb-denum is valuable, fetching high prices. Mining from the two open pit mines, Lornex and Valley, brings in an av-erage of 41.7 million tonnes of ore per year. Copper is used in many ways. When mixed with iron, it’s used to make steel. It is also used to build pipes, including pipelines. Molybdenum is also used to create steel. The entire process, from digging the material out of the ground to pro-cessing it in the mill to shipping it off in big trucks, can be seen at the mine during tours open to the public this summer. 24 THINGS TO DO IN LOGAN LAKE ★ 2013 www.loganlake.ca
In the heart of Gold Country, Logan Lake is one of British Columbia’s newest towns. In the 1970s, it was built to house the families and workers at the Lornex mine. Ranchers have been in the area since 1870, but it
was not until the early 1900s that the miners came to the valley. Frank Cyril Swannell explored and mapped the Highland Valley in 1910.In the beginning, mining in the area was labour-inten-
sive. Hardy souls had to cross great, rugged distances to transport copper to a smelter. The haul was long by horse-drawn wagon on steep dirt cattletrails through the Highland Valley to Ashcroft and beyond. In the mid-1960s, technology allowed the copper
mining industry a more feasible future in the Highland Valley. Dr. Egil Lorntzen, a geophysicist, was one of the main players in developing mining in the region. Soon, excavation began, and with that came the
swift construction of the town of Logan Lake. During the summer of 1970, excavation for utility services un-derground and surveying for housing began. Home construction began in the early winter for workers at the Lornex mine and their families. Hay bails were often used to insulate basement concrete and water
lines to protect them from freezing. While the town was being erected, the province ap-
pointed John Aldrich from Lornex as Mayor. In 1971, the Village of Logan Lake was incorporated. All the town and district services were built in one
compact area to provide easy access for residents. The municipal and district building was built next door to the fi re hall and RCMP detachment, with health services just across the street. Retail shops and the li-brary were all built in a convenient pedestrian-only mall. Lornex donated $800,000 for construction costs of sewage and wastewater services and a television repeater station. A recreation society was formed and Lornex donated money for the playground and sports fi elds as well.In August of 1971, the people came. There were
eighty homes, fi ve condos and thirty trailer lots ready for residents, and a school that was completed by en-rolment date. The copper of the Highland Valley is a valuable met-
al, but, more importantly, copper laid the foundation for the birth and growth of a town. Today, many fami-lies live and work in the beautifully situated, thriving town of Logan Lake.
