As fragmentationquickly invadesyour machines, themany symptomsshow up as:• crashes, slowdowns,

freeze-ups and downtime

• slow PC boot times, causing users to waste long, unproductiveminutes while the computer startsup or reboots after a crash

• servers slowing down and crashing, idling all of your users and possibly corrupting vital data

• minor problems turning into major headaches

• killing productivity as users wait for slow PCs

• premature hardware replacement

Servers:Fragmentation erodes server perform-ance, making file access, print jobsand email unbearably slow. Routinebackup jobs and virus and spywarescans take entirely too long or hang.

Fragmentation is also an insidiouscontributor to crashes and data loss.Servers are often the obvious choiceto benefit from Diskeeper—keepthem automatically defragmented and

The Diskeeper CorporationMaintenance Agreement—Protection for your Volume License Investment

Maxine Berger, Senior Maintenance SalesManager has been with DiskeeperCorporation for over 13 years.“I simply

love talking with people from all over theUnited States and Canada, and hearing fromthem year after year as they renew theirMaintenance Agreements with me. It’s great toget to know our customers personally andreally help them, hear about their successes andhow they love our products.”

What does Diskeeper Corporation’s Maintenance Program consist of?“When you purchase a maintenance agree-ment for your volume licenses, you are enti-tled to any free upgrade or incrementalupdate during the contract period. Customersautomatically receive their upgrades from ourservice department when they are released. Inaddition, incremental updates can be down-loaded immediately from our website whenthey are available.”

Why do your customers purchase a Maintenance Agreement for their volume licenses?“Of course, the first reason is the cost savings. They save money purchasing maintenance asopposed to buying the actual softwareupgrade further on down the line. If they pur-chase a maintenance contract along with thesoftware licenses, there is no other expense. They are taken care of for the length of theMaintenance Agreement, one or two years. Noother administrative work or funding isneeded until the renewal for the contractcomes up.”

What benefits do your customersget from purchasing a MaintenanceAgreement for all of their licenses?“They are protecting their initial softwareinvestment by keeping it up-to-date with theimprovements to the product. They automati-cally get any incremental improvement plusany full upgrade that is released during theagreement period. Upgrades are sent out auto-matically to maintenance customers, and anyincremental release can easily be downloadedfrom the Diskeeper Corporation website.Eachnew upgrade is always packed with incrediblenew technology that I don’t want any of my

customers missing out on because they don’thave maintenance on their licenses.”

Are there any additional benefits?“I would say the greatest benefits come fromhaving Diskeeper site-wide, on everyWindows machine, then also having mainte-nance for every one of those licenses. Thisway, they can have peak performance and realreliability for their entire site, and always havethe latest Diskeeper technology immediatelyfor all their machines whenever it is released.”

What is the cost savings of purchasing maintenance?“Maintenance costs approximately 50% less*than a software upgrade. This is a substantialsavings as opposed to purchasing the soft-ware upgrades by themselves. In this way, thecustomer doesn’t have to budget for anothersoftware version for one or two years,depend-ing on the length of the maintenance agree-ment. He can benefit from always having thelatest Diskeeper Corporation technology andkeep his site at peak performance withgreater reliability.”

Technology changes fast! Protect yourvolume license investment. Get auto-matic upgrades to new versions whenthey are released. Call Maxine today toget a quote for a Maintenance Agreement!800-829-6468 code 9220.

*Savings depends on product purchased and volume license level of software.

the rest of the machines should befine. But what about your worksta-tions? If your users browse the web, have large user profiles, if you installsoftware updates on workstations, then your entire site is suffering fromthe damage caused by fragmentation.

Workstations:Fragmentation does invade your work-stations, and affects much more thanjust the obvious Microsoft® Office doc-uments and database files. Routinemaintenance and background fileactivity provide a host of fragmenta-tion-creating activities. In addition, fragmentation of rarely used or unim-portant files or free space in turn com-pounds fragmentation of the impor-tant data that you need daily.

Those factors above, compounded withthe constant writing, changing and eras-ing of temporary files and browsercache files, make workstations a virtual

breeding ground for disk fragmentation. This equals system downtime and unre-liable machines you would ratherreplace than continue to troubleshoot.

Daily Defragmentation:You know there’s a direct relationshipbetween disk fragmentation and per-formance: As the number of disk frag-ments increases on any machine, per-formance drops. The more work thedisk drive has to do to deliver data, the longer the rest of the system hasto wait, and the slower it runs.

The solution is just as simple: Defrag-ment daily with Diskeeper across yoursite. By keeping the number of frag-ments low, you eliminate one of thebiggest barriers to peak system per-formance and increase uptime andproductivity.

ROI:So where exactly does automatic, dailydefragmentation ROI come from? Hereis a brief summary:

• Dramatically cut down on system downtime

• Higher productivity from systemskept at peak performance

• No unnecessary hardware upgrades(e.g., upgrading CPU, RAM, etc. tocompensate for fragmentation)

• Reduce helpdesk calls

• Extend the life of existing hardware

• Eliminate the high cost of manually defragmenting anymachines.

Sitekeeper makes software and patch management as easy as clicking your mouse. No dedicated hardware needed, no dictionary-size manual to read —Sitekeeper is so straight-forward that most first-time users can completely automatetheir patch management in under an hour.

Sitekeeper also handles and automates hardware and softwareinventories, license compliance reports, and even remoteautomated software installation —and it’s incredibly affordable.

“This was our first use of Sitekeeper (specifically the Patchkeepermodule) at this level and it worked flawlessly. In less than an hour, I had automatically patched 94 servers. Before we used this product, this effort would have required two dedicated daysfrom me to do each server individually. Talk about ROI!” —John O’Brien, Senior Network Systems Engineer, Keane, Inc.

Here’s a hypothetical scenario:Twelve months ago you heardsome complaints about slow sys-

tems. You looked into this and your eval-uation showed fragmentation on all sys-tems across the network. You tested ina lab. You installed defragmentation trialware to do a cross-section analysisof production systems (or lab equiva-lents thereof). You even used the freeDisk Performance Analyzer for Networksto get a quick broad-scale report on thesituation. You may even have used NTPerfMon, Net IQ, BMC or other manage-ment/metrics tool to better understandthe significance of fragmentation. Thenusing all this data, built a solid businesscase, got funding approved, and thencompleted your purchase of Diskeeperfor your entire site.

Now its six months later and a seniorIT or finance manager asks at the endof some department meeting, “Howdid that defrag project go that youimplemented earlier this year?”

The short answer might be, “Oh yeah, totally forgot about that, it went fine,it’s off doing its thing.” Which wouldbe true, but it is providing manage-ment only the minimal response towhat should be a glowing report on aproject executed properly with thereported fragmentation issues solved

Some excellent methods forproving return on investmentfor Diskeeper will come frombaseline analysis of current

operations. This mightinclude analyzing the volumeof calls to your Help Desk; it may include PerformanceMonitoring of Servers, using

metrics such as Disk I/OQueues or number of SQL

transactions per second, etc.

Not just another

“bright idea”:

and no further management attentionneeded to maintain this.

Now, wouldn’t it be really cool to say,“Good question; I ran a post-imple-mentation report and we improved net-worked system performance acrossthe entire network by 9% overall, removing an average of 33,000 frag-ments per system. With that data, andother reports, subtracting IT time andsoftware cost, we solidly place ROI at148% for this year alone. Given soft-ware maintenance and occasionalspot-check management, we figurecontinuing ROI will rise to and main-tain at 393% per year for the nextthree years.”

A competent, detailed response suchas that will make your life easier in thefuture as management recalls yourthoroughness on the enterprise“defrag project.”

With a solid understanding of theefforts you have to continually gothrough to prove your successes,Diskeeper Corporation added new

reporting capabilities into Diskeeper10 to assist IT professionals in gaug-ing the effectiveness and benefit ofautomatic defragmentation.

Diskeeper’s Historical Reports allowfor capture of point-in-time fragmenta-tion levels as well as trends. This canbe very useful for various analyses.Example: when you get that report thatfile server #42 took an extra four hoursto backup last Friday, you can bring up

a report and determine if somethingoccurred that day (or right before it)that spiked fragmentation and con-tributed to the extended archiving pro-cedure. These reports empower youwith data to allow greater effective-ness in keeping systems running atpeak reliability and performance.

If the scene at your office is like it isat many, your boss probably wants reg-ular status reports on the systems,

maybe even highlights ofsome of the recent goings-on in the network, updateson Help Desk traffic, etc. And, really key with thesereports is that they providethe data to show how thetime and money your com-pany invested in deployingan automatic defrag-menter across the entirenetwork is truly paying off.Diskeeper 10 will help tofulfill these requests.

With Diskeeper Admin-istrator “Performance Re-ports” you’ll know howmany fragments any sys-tem on the network hashad in its worst case, where it stands right now,and how much file frag-mentation has been elimi-nated over the life of themachine. All this is avail-able on a volume-by-vol-ume basis. A quick scan

A t the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) in NewJersey, Stan Dobrowski is tasked with maintainingthe performance of a dozen servers. Dobrowski is a

network administrator and has worked with computers formuch of his life. With years of experience as his guide,Dobrowski is keenly aware of a discreet nemesis that lurksin all computers — a nemesis that threatens to slow per-formance or stop it completely, all with little warning. This isdisk fragmentation. While subtle at first, fragmentation canbecome an imposing problem if it not properly dealt with.

These problems are magnified for administrators operatinglarge numbers of servers. For support staff, disk fragmenta-tion can quickly become an arch-nemesis. Service callsincrease, productivity decreases and managers begin to won-der at what expense they can afford new machines. The pre-mier tool to combat fragmentation is Diskeeper, the auto-matic defragmenting solution from Diskeeper Corporation.

A UNIQUE SOLUTIONThe BCUA serves the wastewater needs of approximately500,000 residents in 46 of the 70 towns in Bergen Countyand the solid waste disposal needs of approximately one-fourth of Bergen County. The wastewater treatment plantprocesses more than 30 billion gallons of wastewater peryear while the solid waste division manages about 130,000tons per year.

Dobrowski is charged with maintaining more than 100 desk-tops and 12 servers within the BCUA. In order to keep 400gigabytes of administrative data reliable, Dobrowski mustbe sure his systems run at their peak.

Every time data is created, edited and deleted, the viciouscycle of fragmentation begins anew. Eventually a large per-centage of the computer’s resources are used for the taskof retrieving a file. As more and more files are created, edited and disposed of, the computer’s resources becomeever more taxed. When this happens, it becomes difficult tooperate multiple applications and everything slows down.

With that in mind, Dobrowski turned to Diskeeper. Diskeeperis the market-leading automatic defragmenting product.Diskeeper would ensure the BCUA’s servers remained reli-able and the vital work of the BCUA would not suffer.

“I’m well aware fragmentation is an issue,” said Dobrowski.“A while ago I heard about Diskeeper and the fact that itcould run automatically and be administered remotely. So Ipicked up Diskeeper and have been using it ever since.”

After evaluating the software, Dobrowski licensed Diskeeperfor use on the BCUA’s servers. Diskeeper offers a numberof features that other defragmenting products simply do not.It is these unique and powerful features that have madeDobrowski a huge fan of Diskeeper.

“Once I ran the analysis that Diskeeper provides, I couldsee that I was heavily fragmented,” said Dobrowski. “Until Idid the analysis, I didn’t know how bad it was.”

Michael Materie, Diskeeper product manager for DiskeeperCorporation, explained what sets his company’s productapart from its competitors.

“What made Diskeeper different and why it hung aroundwhile everyone else fell away was the fact that it is an auto-matic background defragmenter,” explained Materie. “Thatconcept of an automatic background product is highlydesired in an environment like BCUA’s.”

Diskeeper operates without interrupting daily tasks andwithout affecting productivity. This feature is critical. Anyonewho has put all other programs on hold while running lesserdefragmenting programs knows how productivity comes to astandstill. Diskeeper succeeds where others fail because itis an automatic defragmenter. The time saved by automa-tion translates into higher productivity and less expense. Italso allows IT professionals like Dobrowski to focus theirskills on more demanding tasks.

“The Set It and Forget It® and Smart Scheduling™ features aresome of the things I like a lot,” Dobrowski said. “Diskeeper

figures out the optimal schedule and it doesn’t waste a lot ofresources defragging when it doesn’t need to. I really can setit and forget it.”

“We built Diskeeper to be sensitive to what is going on inthe system,” said Materie. The software uses adaptivetechnologies like I/O Smart™ and Smart Scheduling tolearn usage patterns; therefore, Diskeeper automaticallyruns when it’s most needed, without harming computerperformance.

“We built the product under the assumption that a systemwould be in use 24/7,” Materie said. “We wantedDiskeeper to work on systems to improve performance, notrob the system of its ability to produce.”

PRODUCTIVITY WITHOUT COMPROMISEAn employee’s productivity is based on motivation andavailable resources. If the resources available to anemployee are substandard, productivity inevitably declines.Diskeeper maintains productivity by efficiently defragment-ing computer hard drives without taxing system resources. The product is user-friendly and consolidates free space, which leads to revitalized computer performance.

“Diskeeper has Set It and Forget It technology built in so itcan run anytime. I have it run every night and on the week-ends,” Dobrowski said. “And with Smart Scheduling, itautomatically knows when the next disk defragmentationshould take place.”

Regular defragmentation clearly maintains the efficiency ofthe BCUA’s servers and helps Dobrowski feel confident

about reliability. “I like to know that my disk and my serversare not working harder than they have to be,” he said. “Ifeel certain this is what happens with Diskeeper running.”

The software also reduces demands on the BCUA’s busy ITstaff, Dobrowski added. “In the five years I’ve usedDiskeeper, I’ve never had a problem, I’ve never had a sin-gle bit of lost data and I’ve never had a crash.”

Diskeeper not only runs efficiently, it also runs without con-flicting with other programs.

“You are always able to access files during defragmenta-tion,” Materie said. “There is never a conflict for running anti-virus software or anything like that. They are compatible. It’sall integrated. It’s all handled. Its all 100 percent safe.”

BCUA’s vision statement is, “We believe that serving ourBergen County customers with excellence is our mostimportant job.… We will maintain our facilities and systemsas though they were our own.”

Thousands of New Jersey residents depend on Dobrowskiand the BCUA. And Dobrowski depends on Diskeeper toprotect the performance of technology that’s vital to theagency’s mission.
