Hello from the WinemakerHappy February! There is never a dull moment in the wine industry, and January didn’t disappoint. Dad and I judged the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Competition, which had a record breaking 7,160 wines entered this year. It is double blind, so the people bringing our panel the wine don’t know what it is, and we don’t know what it is either, except the varietal category. My first day, we judged 35 under-$10 Pinot Grigios (one has to pay their dues on some of these) and then 71 $25-$30 Red Blends. The next day our panel judged 76 $30-$35 Pinot Noirs (yummy) and 36 $25+ Petit Verdots. I was pretty scared about the Petit Verdot because it can be a tannic monster on its own, but most of them were quite good. The last day of judging before the Sweepstakes my panel was blessed with 76 $35-$40 Zinfandels and 36 $30+ Cabernet Francs, two of my favorites! Finally on the fourth day, all of the judges efforts culminate into a round called the Sweepstakes. The best wine that each panel tasted makes its way to the Sweepstakes, and we taste them against each other to determine the best of the best. Out of 7,160 wines, I am proud to announce that TWO Rock Wall wines made it to the Sweepstakes round! One of those wines was the 2013 Tannat, and the other was the 2014 Sparkling Grenache Rose! In addition, we received

prestigious designations of Double Gold on the 2012 Jesse’s Zinfandel and the 2014 Super Alamedan and Gold on the 2014 Sparkling Blanc de Blancs and the 2013 Harris Kratka Zinfandel.

Every February we release the Romancer, and the 2014 is absolutely delightful. It’s a blend of 1/3 Malbec, 1/3 Mourvedre and 1/3 Petit Verdot. My iPhone actually named this wine. I was making notes about these grapes in my iPhone and it kept auto-correcting the vineyard name from Rominger to “Romancer.” I can take a hint from the universe, so the name was given and the Romancer was born. This threesome fits together like soulmates. Romancer is brimming with aromas of ripe blackberry, blueberry muffin, sage, graham cracker, dried pipe tobacco, followed by flavors of Cocoa Puffs, lavender, black raspberry, violet, black cherry and a savory black tea finish. Please enjoy this with someone you love.

Le Mur de Roche literally translates to the wall of rocks, or Rock Wall in French. This stunning wine was barrel aged for three and a half years before it tasted so good we had to bottle it to share it with all our friends. The Petite Sirah comes from some of the best vineyards in Napa including Carver-Sutro and Carpey-Connelly Ranch. This delectable wine exhibits blackberry liqueur, crème brûlée, coconut cream pie, black tea, orange zest and French vanilla. Patience truly pays off.

The Knight’s Valley Chardonnay is a new wine for us that I think you will like. I know I do! It is a robust Chardonnay that was fermented and aged in 80% new oak with 100% malolactic fermentation to create a buttery component to the wine. This rich Chardonnay has generous aromas of butterscotch candy and Gala apple followed by flavors of exotic mango and Bosc pear caramelized in butter and brown sugar.

The San Francisco’s Chronicle’s Best of Class 2014 Sparkling Grenache Rose is truly delicious. This is the last of the vintage, so drink it or savor it in your cellar-there’s no wrong way to drink sparkling rose, except out of a shoe, that’s wrong. Gentle aromas of white peach and white grape saunter from the glass followed by flavors of strawberry shortcake, rose petal and general awesomeness.

All the Best,Shauna Rosenblum Winemaker, Rock Wall Wine Co.
