‘A New Beginning’ The West Hartford Public Schools started the 2014-2015

school year with a new team at the top. Mr. Thomas Moore began his position as the Superintendent, and Dr. Andrew Morrow as the Assistant Superintendent for Administration. Dr. Nancy DePalma continues her position as Assistant Su-perintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.

This year’s convocation was held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at Conard High School. The Welcome was given by Mr. Steve Woznicki, Braeburn Principal, and Dr. Andrew Morrow introduced guests. The Greetings from the Board of Educa-tion was given by Dr. Mark Overmyer Velazquez. A former

WHEA World Notice the changes in WHEA World. It has been revamped to make it more concise. The calen-dar of upcoming events, and other information will be on the website at www.whea.org.

CEA The CEA Educational Forum was held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Toyota Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT from 9 AM until 12 PM. CEA hosted a symposium for all CT Secre-tary of State certified gubernatorial candidates. The three gubernatorial candidates are Tom Foley, Joe Visconti and Dan Malloy (in order of their appearance). The moderator was Diane Smith, President of Diane Smith Media. Questions were from the CEA formal candidate ques-

tionnaire. Audience members could submit questions that were included. A straw poll was taken at the end of the program.

Summer Leadership Conference was held at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. It began on Mon-day, August 4 and ran through Wednesday, August 6. Several West Hartford teachers attended. Plan to go next summer!

NEA/RA The NEA R/A was held in Denver, CO Monday, June 30 through Monday, July 6, 2014. The new officers are President Lily Eskelson Garcia, Vice President Rebecca Pringle, and Secretary/Treasurer Princess Moss. Check out the website at www.nea.org and Lily’s Blackboard, her new

West Hartford continues its tradition of exciting classes for summer school. The high school program was held at Sedgwick. Many teachers taught and helped their students.

The English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) program was held at Charter Oak. There were many teachers for the students who were in grades K, 1-8. The ESOL summer school principals were Sabrina Zaffina and Ryan Cleary.

Gayle Campbell, Duffy third grade teacher, will speak at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual 2014 Convention. The Convention will be held November 20 through November 23, 2014. Gayle will present, as a member of a panel, on Saturday, No-

Current Issues

National, State News

In state news the three Secretary of State certified gubernatorial can-didates are Tom Foley, Dan Malloy, and Joe Visconti. The polls are close for Dan Malloy and Tom Foley and about 18% are undecided.

There are many different topics that are being discussed including many education issues. Some of the education items that are at stake are SBAC, CCSS and Teacher Evaluation.

Local News

As of July 1, 2014 Mr. Thomas Moore began his new position as Su-perintendent of the West Hartford Public Schools. Dr. Andrew Mor-row became the Assistant Superintendent for Administration. Assis-tant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Dr. Nancy DePalma, continues in her position. We wish them a good
