Pastor Max Stollznow—TLH Board Chaplain

In 1945 an appeal went out in the Lutheran Church of SA to raise funds to build a Home in Tanunda to pro-vide Christian care for the aged. The appeal brochure was headed “Lutheran Rest Home for the Aged - A

Memorial of thanksgiving unto God.” God had graciously spared us from the war, and quite rightly people were thankful. This appeal led to the building of the Tanunda Lutheran Home which was opened in 1952.

In 1971 as TLH expanded a Chapel was added to provide a sacred space for residents to meet for worship, Bible study, daily prayer or meditation. It would also be used for special services like funerals. The Chapel was easily accessible and conveniently located. As the number of people in the Home grew, a larger Chapel was needed. In 2007 the Board of TLH began planning to build new facilities to replace some that were badly in need of upgrading. The new build-ing would look to the needs of residents well into the future and replace accommodation that had become inadequate for staff to provide the kind of care that is available today. A new and larger Chapel was included in the plans.

The new multi-purpose Chapel was opened and dedicated on 5th May. It is almost twice as big as the previous Chapel, has excellent provision for wheel chairs and a new Clavinova. Designed and crafted by a local artist the chancel furnishings are a feature of the new building. As the Chapel is a multi-purpose space it has a well appointed kitchenette and servery area.

The new Gramp Chapel is an excellent addition to the Home and provides a warm and inviting place for residents to come for a range of activities, but especially for worship to thank and praise God who blessed us richly during the war and has continued to prosper and bless the Tanunda Lutheran Home ever since 1945.

The good soaking rains we received in May following the rain in April have certainly changed the country. Even the lawns which appeared dead have come back to life. The rain for May is near average for the month. In Tanunda no rain was recorded in May 1934. The highest recording for May was 184mm in 1923.

Thank you Ralph Kernich for this information

THE CEO’S CLOSING COMMENTS AT THE OPENING AND BLESSING OF GRAMP CHAPEL AND GRAMP FACILITY

TLH is excited and proud to have a new modern facility to benefit our ageing population in the Barossa Val-ley. This is the largest building project ever undertaken by the Home that brings us into the 21st Century with the development of high quality accommodation and facilities for the care of our residents. This build-ing is designed to meet the high care needs of residents for many years to come and my vision is a forty year life span at least for this building.

Mr. Colin Gramp AM, a great supporter of TLH, contributed to the Opening by pointing out the long associa-tion with TLH and the Gramp family, starting out with a significant donation from Fred Gramp to assist with the original Gramp Wing and Chapel. Colin turned the first sod for the Gramp Facility and Chapel three years ago and has experienced a short period of respite care within Stage 1 of the Project. Josephine Gramp is a resident of TLH and is located in the second Stage of the Gramp Facility.

Thank you’s were extended to the Board of Management, Managers and Staff for the support to enable TLH to complete this project. The planning work by the Managers’ Group that is required for a project of this na-ture has been very thorough and we owe them a debt of gratitude for the design input and finished project. A Special thank you is extended to the Building Committee for their help and assistance during the three years of construction and regular Site meetings. The work by the Nursing, Hospitality, Laundry, Administra-tion and Maintenance Teams as well as many others has been invaluable to this project and the attention to detail is appreciated by all. The work carried out by GHD, Architects, Kennett Builders, Coffey Project Managers and RLB, Quantity Surveyors, is acknowledged and appreciated. This group has assisted TLH to plan the project, construct the building and finish the project within budget and on time.

The TLH Congregation support for the Chapel project was recognised as they have been looking forward to this day for some years now and have been worshiping in a temporary Chapel for over a year. The Congre-gation purchased the chancel furniture, hand crafted by Michael Mason, and the paraments by Jan Kaesler. There are two wall banners to be supplied shortly by Jan Kaesler that the Ladies’ Auxiliary has commis-sioned. Pastor Colin Henschke and Ivor Carter were thanked for recording the Opening and Dedication Ceremony. The sponsors, Helbig Memorials, Barossa Funerals and Orlando Wines were thanked for their support for this great event.

Thank you to TLH Board Chairman Ray Obst

for supplying this information

BACKGROUND TO THE GRAMP PROJECT

The reasons for this $17million project This 54 bed Aged Care Residential Project arose from the Home’s inability to provide ageing in place and appropriate facilities for residents in both Rothe and Gramp Wings. Residents now have greater care needs than when these earlier wings were established. Previously 33% of residents at TLH required high level of care; this figure rose to 50% and currently it is 90%.It is expected the demand for high care services will increase due mainly to the greater availability of community aged care pack-ages and other support services that enable older people to remain living in their own homes for longer than was previously possible.

Consideration was given to renovating the Rothe and Gramp Wings but was not adopted because the long, steep ramp to Rothe Wing was a safety issue and because of the prolonged disruption to residen-tial care services. Additionally, the rooms in these Wings were too small for high levels of care where lifters and trolleys are required on a daily basis. The cost of renovation was also significant.

Stage One Six small Fourth Street Independent Living units were demolished to make way for the first two storey stage. This replaced the twenty beds in old Rothe and Gramp Wings with a high level of resi-dential care. The additional beds in this proposal has allowed for the transfer of seven bed licences from the ABG (Acacia, Banksia and Grevillea), high care facility making this area all single rooms with ensuites. A survey about services for residents, relatives and staff conducted in the planning proc-ess provided many suggestions for an improved layout and services delivery.

Stage Two The demolition of the old Gramp Wing and former Chapel allowed Stage Two of the project to proceed. This new two level Gramp Facility occupies the

site on the old lawn bowls green and is where the original Gramp Wing stood. The spacious multi pur-pose chapel seats 200 and reduces the safety issues. It will also be used as an activities area.

Building Requirements The High Care Facility (ABG) was used as a basis for Gramp planning. Many environmental issues, such as a solar hot water system, window tinting and insulation were considered. Outside areas have been developed for resident use and individual control of room tem-peratures and centralised control of communal areas have been achieved. Larger doorways provide easy access for beds and bain maries, and an emergency power generator will cover the area during power sup-ply interruptions. All areas are secure with swipe cards and coded locks. There is a central Nurses’ station on each accommodation level and a new plant room for the hot water system and emergency genera-tor. The use of chutes from first to ground floor has reduced the routes for soiled laundry and rubbish removal.

What has been achieved? A flexible aged care facility which meets the high care needs of residents now and in the future has been provided. Staffing requirements have been minimised through consolidating residents’ accommodation into three main areas: Gramp, Trinity Court and ABG. Supply lines and service points have been shortened for staff for meals, laundry and care services. The issues regarding access and congestion in func-tions areas, particularly during Church services and other activities has been resolved. The double storey construction contains the spread of buildings. Addi-tional parking is now available. Requirements of the Building Code of Australia and Certification require-ments of the Department of Health and Ageing have been met.

OPENING AND OPENING AND OPENING AND BLESSING OF BLESSING OF BLESSING OF

GRAMP CHAPEL AND GRAMP CHAPEL AND GRAMP CHAPEL AND GRAMP FACILITYGRAMP FACILITYGRAMP FACILITY

At last the great day had arrived! After many years in the planning and three long years of building activity, inconveniences, substitutions, no funerals on site, and great anticipation, Sunday 5th May 2013 was indeed a joyous and memorable day.

Officiating ministers Pastor David Altus, SA/NT District President; Rev Dr John Thiel, TLH Chaplain, and Rev Dr Michael Semmler, retiring President of Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) entered the beautiful new Chapel to the processional hymn Praise to the Lord the Almighty the King of Creation. Pastor Semmler unveiled the foundation stone for the Gramp Facility and Chapel in the name of the Triune God. Pastor Altus consecrated this house of worship, the altar, font and lectern also in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. The first and second Scripture readings were read by Raymond Obst, Chairman of the Board of TLH and Joan Lindner, Member of the Board. Pastor Altus read the Gospel—John 10:22-30. Pastor Semmler delivered the sermon based on John Chapter 5—Do you want to get well?

The TLH Choir enhanced the worship with the singing of All creatures of our God and King, accompanied by Mildred Koch at the organ. Lita Schirmer was organist for the service with Peter Koch also at the Clavinova. Irene Joppich artistically arranged the altar flowers.

Brian Hurn, Mayor and Chairman of the Barossa Council officially opened the Gramp Facility and Chapel and acknowledged the original indigenous owners . Mr Hurn stated that the Facility and Chapel have been named after two highly respected Barossan citizens—Mr and Mrs Fred Gramp. Other speakers were Ray Obst, Chairman of TLH Board; Keith Adams CEO, and Colin Gramp.

An estimated 320 people attended the ceremony. The offering amounted to nearly $4000 and will support the Chapel Fund which is still an ongoing project. Photographers included Tony Robinson from The Leader, Staff member Ivor Carter, Pastor emeritus Colin Henschke (video/DVD) and numerous individuals.

An apology was received from Patrick Secker, Federal Member for Barker. Special thanks were extended to generous sponsors Helbig Memorials for printing the programs, Barossa Funerals for the afternoon tea and refreshments, Orlando Wines Pernod Ricard for the donation of wine.

Tours of the new facility were later conducted by staff members.

Truly this is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice! Ed.

The Carving of Jesus by Michael Mason—Eden Valley When I was commissioned to do the depiction of Jesus to go on the cross I soon realised I could not carve a crucifixion as it really was. A true depiction of Jesus on the cross after all the suffering he went through would have everyone in tears all the time.

After discussion with Mr. Keith Adams and Pastor John Thiel it was decided to carve Jesus still alive with a serene look saying, 'Father forgive them for they know not what they do.'

So this is what I set out to do. I have given his head a slight tilt to the side and, looking down on the congregation, his mouth is slightly open because he is speaking.

Because Jesus was a carpenter with his father till he was thirty years of age and walked everywhere, I think he would have had good muscle tone and being only 33 years of age at crucifixion, should have been in prime health. Having probably not eaten for two days he would have been quite hollow in the tummy. I have wrapped a towel around his waist to cover his nakedness.

The sculpture has been made out of three slabs of blackwood coming out of the same tree. I have specially lami-nated and picked grain so that the end result is: You can see toes and knees in the grain, fingers and thumbs, cheek bones and a furrowed brow as well as chest shape. He is hollow inside to aid in stability of the sculpture. The weight of the timber started out at nearly 60 kg and has finished up at about 24 kg.

The project was a pleasure and an honour to create. I certainly gave him many hugs as I lifted him around and also shed some tears as I thought of the cruelty he suffered for me and us.

My end conclusion was the miracle was not only in him dying for us but the rising again from the grave to Eternal Life which he has also promised to those who believe in him.

Kind regards Michael Mason

Judith and Michael Mason

The Paraments by Jan Kaesler—Tintinara It is very exciting for Tanunda Lutheran Home to now have the new Chapel and other facilities open and dedicated – may there be many blessings to all who are involved in their various roles associated with this complex.

I have the privilege of being associated with the Chapel area by way of designing and constructing the textile paraments and banners. This is a large project, so will progressively have pieces of work added. Initially there will be the altar frontals for each season of the Church Year. So far the white and red altar pieces are complete. Following that there will be banners and later a pastor’s stole and lectern piece for each ‘season’.

Visual art in the worship space adds to the pleasurable experience of worship in a Christian community. These textile art paraments and banners are designed to visually express the biblical texts and readings of the Church Year and other aspects of Christian life. At a later stage I will compile information and explanation of the designs of the textile pieces.

My interest in Christian Visual Art developed while doing my studies to become a teacher and took Textile Art as a major study. This interest has grown further through doing various workshops, both as a student and a tutor. I have also enjoyed the work of designing and constructing pastors’ stoles and church paraments for many years.

I trust that my work associated with Tanunda Lutheran Home will bring messages of the Gospel – the good news that we have a Saviour who has a place for each one of us with Him forever—praise and thanks to God always!

Christian greetings from Jan Kaesler

Colin Gramp AM Colin turned the first sod on Wednesday 11 August 2010. In 1971 his Uncle Fred Gramp asked Hedley Zerk in what way he could help the Home. He subsequently made substantial donations and with a government two-to-one subsidy, enabled the erection of Gramp Wing and adjacent Gramp Chapel which were opened and dedicated in 1973—just 40 years ago. Colin and Josie have continued financially supporting the Home and in particular the Chapel. Colin is grateful that TLH provides not only physical care, but spiritual needs as well. Colin expressed his gratitude on behalf of his family for the final completion of the Gramp accommodation building and Chapel. As the former Gramp Wing and Chapel have been demolished, Colin said

that he believes it is fitting that the Gramp name be perpetuated and honoured.

Comment from Clinical Manager —Kylie Williams I have found the facility a lovely area to spend time in and am looking forward to my new office on the sec-ond floor. The reduced distances between care areas has made a difference to the residents as they are more able to socialise with people in other wings and have access to more activity programs. The rooms are lovely and spacious with a bright airy feel, and it has been lovely to see residents settle in so well.

Clinical Managers Kylie Williams and Karen Hough oversee care regimes for all residents in respite and residential care.

Landscaping A building is not complete without a lovely setting of greenery. The Garden Committee worked tirelessly for many months investigating and planning suitable plants and attractive stone borders to beautify the area. Everyone must surely be proud of the impressive results. Thank you Shane Davenport, Marilyn Langley, Lynn Hayman, Danny Harkin and Ray Obst for your efforts. A lovely group of silver birches sur-rounds a weeping mulberry and nandinas add a splash of colour. This design will be duplicated nearby at a later date. The row of trees against the Chapel wall are Teddy Bear magnolias—these are hardy and will be kept trimmed to a suitable height. Garden areas near the Gramp Building entry are about to be developed. Well done to all those involved.

Maintenance Team Everything was in place in the brand new offices, residents’ rooms and Chapel in readiness for the grand opening of the new facility. But behind the scenes there had been frenetic activity by the Maintenance Team of Danny Harkin (Manager), Dave Borman, Geoff Crook, Duncan Dempster and Kym Roenfeldt. And yet they were always cheerful whilst busily carrying out their allotted tasks. Danny spent many hours, often in Adelaide, accessing best prices and deals, viewing and making decisions on so many different options. These days tilting tables, desks, swivel chairs and so many items come in flat packs of numerous pieces which all have to be painstakingly assembled. Tasks included purchasing and installation of fridges and computers, as well as organising notice boards and signage, testing and tagging electrical goods, hanging the large canvasses – and the list goes on! But Danny says he is very pleased with the final outcome.

Catering The wide passage outside the Chapel was utilised for serving a sumptuous afternoon tea to the large crowd following the 1.00pm service. Catering Coordinator Kay O’Riley organised the refreshments consisting of pies, pasties, sausage rolls, fruit platters, sandwiches, cake, meringues and fruit cup. Kay was ably assisted by Cheryl Cundy, Rae Maurer and Marilyn Langley who also served the food and drinks. Four volunteers who made the sandwiches were pleased with the final outcome, as were the guests. Assisting Joan Lindner were Raelene Mattner, Helen Koch and Bev Hoffmann. They spent all Sunday morning from 9-12 adjacent to the kitchen making the delicious, wide variety of fresh sandwiches. Joan says they all worked well together and that every-thing went very, very well, in spite of initial doubts. Sincere thank you to Sponsors Dennis & Marianne Noack for food and to Orlando Wines Pernod Ricard for donation of wine.

Extra Meals Added to this challenge were the extra meals supplied at lunch time by Housekeeping staff. Luncheon was served to eleven invited guests in the Chat Room. Twenty five meals had been ordered for some Residents’ families and were served in the Social Centre. Deb Krause and Cheryl Brown prepared these meals. Kay said that there was an excellent atmosphere throughout and lots of good, positive feedback. On Tuesday 14th May, a celebratory informal luncheon was provided by the Kitchen for members of staff who came and went between the hours of 11.30am and 1.00pm. Leading up to opening day, there were many hands behind the scenes working together as a team to get things done. This included Maintenance, Catering, Housekeeping

departments and of the course the reliable staff who always volunteer their time on such occasions to make the day a special one.

Canvasses in Gramp Building We owe a debt of gratitude to Peter Muirhead who is the photographer responsible for the huge canvasses of local scenes that adorn the walls throughout Acacia and Waratah. Peter is married to Julienne Hage, a daughter of Dennis and Linda Hage of Bethany, and sister to Felicity, DOC at TLH. Peter was a news journalist with the ABC for many years. A self taught photographer, he has been taking photos in the Barossa Valley over a long time. Both Julie and Peter have developed a strong interest in photography which is something they enjoy wherever they go. Julie has shown Peter around the Barossa including some iconic sites and he developed a portfolio of work over a number of years. It was from this portfolio that the canvasses now hang-ing at TLH were selected by a committee from the Home. The whole idea of the exercise was to provide photos of sufficient size to adequately fill the wall space and which residents and their visitors would be able to relate to and which would stimulate conversation and reflection. The canvasses are the largest that Fuji offer and from Peter’s point of view as a photographer it’s a rare privilege to see his work reproduced to such a size. Peter thoroughly enjoyed attending the recent opening and being able to talk to various individuals who showed an interest in his photo work. Peter’s favorite shot is of Bethany Reserve which at the time - September 2008 - was in full bloom with a fantastic display of wild flowers beneath the gum trees.

Building Site Manager Kennett Pty Ltd

I am very pleased with the end result, I think it turned out well. There are a few hiccups but they will be sorted out.

I loved the Chapel and I thought the room was big enough to accommodate everyone that was there on the opening day comfortably. I think we could squeeze in more.

I also like the overall design as it looks very clean and has sharp modern lines and there is just the right amount of gardens to suit the facility. I did also notice that during opening day, the air-conditioning units in the Chapel were working well and there was no need to have all the units on. I believe there were only two units running. Given the amount of components that went into building this project, we overcame the difficulties of making sure everything works and fits into the allocated space (which was not very big).

I commenced working in Tanunda during October 2010 and completed my time in early 2013. I can honestly say that this has been my most enjoyable project in my building career and I have made quite a number of friends personally as well as profes-sionally. Working with Keith, Danny, Geoff, Kym, Duncan, Dave and Marilyn made my job that much easier and we were able to help each other to bring this project to fruition.

I only hope that I can return to Tanunda Lutheran Home to catch up with all concerned for the next stage of works.

In closing, I think the building looks great, but it is up to the residents, staff and visitors to give the final approval. I hope this is to everyone’s expectations.

 Kind regards

pBnaPastor Graham Maas

Pastor Maas was Chaplain of TLH prior to his retirement in 20011. He says the whole sanctuary is very nicely appointed and good to preach in, being intimate and close, with sim-ple furnishings. It is a beautiful, quiet and reverent place also for private worship, meditation and prayer. A few teething problems with heating and sound are being addressed—let’s be patient and grow into it. Pastor Maas remarked that the body of Jesus on the crucifix is different from the norm, but we are learning to appreciate it. After all, it depicts Christ praying, “Father forgive them….” Pastor Maas thanks the Board for providing this beautiful facility which greatly enhances the spiritual life at the Home.

Lynn Hayman Promotions Officer Lynn says, “It has been an honour and a privilege to witness the development of this wonderful facil-ity. The building of a multi purpose Chapel for use by residents, family and friends for now and in the future is a confident step forward in our pastoral care to the wider community.”

Lynn was very active behind the scenes for a long time. She coordinated the contents for the impres-sive 16 page lift out section of The Leader pub-lished on 24th April. Lynn supplied The Leader with names of associated businesses who could support our story by way of advertisements. This was of tremendous benefit in promoting TLH. Also secured were sponsorships to cover costs of print-ing the programs for the Opening, also for wine and afternoon tea costs. Other involvements included helping to select the Foundation Stone and the Opening Stone, still to be completed by Helbig Memorials. Lynn says, “Our mission for the future will be to welcome and encourage all those associated with our Home, to come into the Chapel and freely participate in what has been created for God’s purpose—to love one another.”

JOAN LINDNER

Well known and highly respected, Joan has been an active contributor to the community for many years.

Joan, ever busy, always makes herself available to lend a hand. Joan was a nominee recently for the combined Light and Barossa Councils’ Volunteer of the Year award. She has the amazing record of being a Board Member of Tanunda Lutheran Home since 1977. Joan is currently the Liaison Officer for the TLH Ladies’ Auxiliary and an active member of the Fundraising Committee. Joan has the ability to rally behind others to support the Home and is a key figure within the Barossa Lutheran Ladies’ Fellowships.

Joan is instrumental in the organisation of the annual Business Morning Tea which is prepared at TLH before being distributed to businesses within the community. Joan has an attention to detail which cannot be underestimated. She is always there

working behind the scenes to get things done and is a great support for the planning and execution of fundraising functions held throughout the year.

Joan is also an active volunteer within the Rowland Flat Lutheran Church where she is Treasurer, plays the organ, teaches Sunday School and is involved in fundraising and many other areas of service. Joan is an active member of the Barossa Meals on Wheels since its inception 40 years ago, delivering meals to those who need them throughout the community. She has also been an active member of the Women’s Agricultural Bureau for over 50 years, also holding numerous committee positions.

Joan’s passion is cooking, having exhibited in local shows over a number of years, taking out numerous prizes for her cakes, jams and pickles. Joan also exhibited in the Royal Adelaide Show for 25 years. She is an expert judge at shows around the region, except Tanunda where she still exhibits. Her passion and commitment to volunteering in numer-ous capacities demonstrates an outstanding contri-bution to our region.

Thank you Joan Lynn Hayman

FRIENDSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, FEASTING and FUN

Recalled by Original Lindner Court Residents

This happy group met for morning tea in the Café on 30th April to celebrate ten years of life at Tanunda Lutheran Home. Ray (and Lorna), Pat and Myra are still living at Lindner Court and we were very sorry that Lorna was not well enough to join the gathering.

Lenora, Edna and Grace are now residents in the Home so there was much laughter as special memo-ries were recalled of previous BBQs and special oc-casions of earlier years. Sadness too, that Edna and Grace’s husbands have passed away in that period. New residents have now joined our group and the same spirit of family and caring for each other contin-ues in Lindner Court. We give thanks too for Management, Staff and Residents who help make it

so and have vowed to continue our get-togethers as long as we are able.

WHO’D RESIDE IN A RETIREMENT HOME?!!!

A combined group of Independent Living residents, friends, other TLH residents and carers filled a Greenock Creek Charter Coach for a visit to Gawler Cinema on Thursday 16th May. Weather was cool, but fine and all were in good spirits as we set out!

The countryside along Gomersal Road and across to the hills where the road joins the freeway, looks good following recent rains and is as beautiful as any I’ve seen on overseas trips and around Austra-lia.

The welcome cuppa and biscuits greeted us on ar-rival and trailers of the films coming up for the rest of 2013 looked interesting. Main film was Quartet, starring Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Dame Gwyneth Jones and David Ryall. Quartet tells the story of Reggie (Courtenay), Wilf (Connolly) and Cissy (Collins) who reside in Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Each year they stage a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday, which also raises funds for the Home. Reggie’s ex-wife Jean (Smith) arrives at the Home and creates tension, playing the diva part but refusing to sing in the concert.

A tasty cut luncheon was then brought to our seats, after which we boarded the coach. All agreed it was well worth the trip as we enjoyed the day out and each other’s company.

Thanks to Carolyn, Marilyn, Sean and driver Eric Heinze for their contribution to the smooth running of the outing.
