Featured Speaker Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison Friday, Oct. 13 4:30 - 6:30pm Jones Theater

Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison are a husband and wife duo who have been making photographs together for almost 20 years. Their work focuses on the relationship between humans and the environment—an idea that has only recently come to popularity with movements like the Go Green initiative and concepts like the carbon footprint. Using photogravure, collage, and painting techniques, the ParkeHarrisons create cinematic environments that explore how we interact with our natural surroundings.

The ParkeHarrisons’ work can be found in over 20 prestigious museum collections, and their book The Architect’s Brother was named one of the ten best photography books by the New York Times in 2000. Recently the couple has begun working in sculpture—large dramatic pieces that complement the dreamy qualities of their photogravures.

SPESC 2017 Juried Presenters & Select Panels - Friday

Panel Talk: Photographs in Printers Ink 9:00 - 9:50am, Room 149 Participants: Dr. Peter Briggs, Texas Tech University Museum, Janet Flohr, Owner/Director, Hare and Hound Press, and Neal Cox, Stephen F. Austin State University. This panel will explore photo mechanical prints as photographs, primarily traditional copper plate photogravure, photo polymer photogravure, collotype and carbon transfer if not more. Do photo mechanical processes produce nostalgic or anachronistic feeling products? Does the “look” of the process in the print convey content in any manner? And, why do we keep bashing our heads against the wall? Are we just romantics?

Ghost Images in an Archive: A Case Study of Dr. Walter Spink’s Ajanta Photographs 9:00 - 9:50am, Room 158by Betsy Williamson

Ghost Images in an Archive will focus on the photographs of Art Historian Dr. Walter M. Spink at the Buddhist caves at Ajanta, Maharashtra, India as a form of vernacular photography. Williamson will explore the trajectory of Spink’s work into the public eye and its reinterpretation through the archive.

The Evocative OTHER / The Provocative THIS 10 -10:50, Room 149by Mary K. Brantl, St. Edwards UniversityBy opening up questions of, how empowered a photographic image can be in the postmodern context of doubtful authority; this talk explores the photographic authority still often embed-ded in and supported by non- photographic arts. The talk will explore potential undercurrents linked to appropriation such as the ownership of the body – that still enable the appropriated aura of past work to concern, to anger, and to activate. Concurrently, it raises its own queries of efficacy and of ethics.

Remote Viewing: An Artist Talk--Collective, Obstructed, and Flatland. 10:00 -10:50am, Room 158by Carlos Rene Pacheco, Louisiana State University

This artist talk concerns three bodies of work; Collec-tive, Obstructed, and Flatland. These works explore the theme of new and evolving approaches to im-age-making such as webcams, camera phones, and drones. Collective is a series of books and videos made using live webcam images of recurring actions in culturally significant spaces. Obstructed is a series of abstractions recorded from live webcams. And Flatland is a series of photographs that explores the textures and space of the Midwest.

This artist talk reflects on how we define mother-hood in the twenty-first century, especially when that definition needs to cover a greater and great-er variety of mothers. The talk presents the works of photographic artists who explore the varia-tions of the mother-identity. “We perform these identities as photographers, and in performing them, create realities specific to our experiences of motherhood.”

Touching Pictures 11:00 - 11:50am, Room 158by Kristine Thompson, Louisiana State University

Touching Pictures will share two empathetic bod-ies of work by artist Kristine Thompson. The first series, Images Seen to Images Felt, is a series of photograms made by pressing light-sensitive gelatin silver print paper up to a laptop screen in the darkroom. Images are collected from a range of online news sources and reflect the turbulence in our world. The second series, Difficult Things Seen Cannot Be Unseen, connects emotional re-manences through the photographic reflections in a subject’s eye.

Into the Void: Making Camera-less Photographs in the Age of Image Overload 2:30-3:30pm, Room 149 by Ross Faircloth and Ashley Whitt

Shifting Grounds will discuss the changing roles of landscape photography as a medium. Panelists will include Jeremiah Ariaz, Amanda Breitbach and Peter Hiatt. Topics for discussion will include the landscape as a monument, sacred and unsacred spaces, mapping the landscape, people and land, and facts and fictions.

Shifting Grounds: A Landscape Panel 1:30 - 2:20pm, Room 149Moderated by Tom Turner, featuring Jeremiah Ariaz, Amanda Breitbach, and Peter Hiatt

The Representation of Alter-Egos as an Expres-sion of Multiplicitous Identity or How I Justify My Excessive Fantasizing; presents a multimedia performative lecture including video, puppets, alter-egos, and friends—both real and imaginary.

Performative Lecture: The Representation Of Alter Egos as an Expression of Multiplicitous Identity 1:30-2:20pm, Room 158by Colette Copeland

This lecture is about making unorthodox imagery in response to a world overwhelmed by tradition-al photographic means. Whitt and Faircloth both make camera-less imagery using a variety of processes: solvent transfers, chemigrams, lumen prints, and traditional gelatin silver prints. The use of the hand is important to both artists as a means of communicating a variety of emotions and themes.

Heathens, explores Hybinette’s relationship with his parents, “They are my best friends. They tolerate my mischief, act out my playful ideas, and allow me to photograph them in intimate situations. The photos displayed are a part of my journey; it is through these photos that I began to learn more about my parents. While their aging has become increasingly apparent to me, so have the similarities in our personalities. We have grown older, but we have not grown apart; instead, we have grown closer together.”

This presentation will address scholarship that challenges the claims, politics, and ethics of doc-umentary photography as well as turn the conver-sation to current photographers that harness the potential social and political power in contempo-rary documentary photography.

Three landscape photographers—Chad Smith, Mark Kinnaman, and Ginger Cook—will lead a panel discussion concerning the ongoing process of photographing landscapes. This discussion will trace the landscape lineage and influences of each presenter as an originator and participant in Texas A&M University—Commerce’s photography program.

Hair Pieces: Ponytails and Souvenirs 2:30 - 3:20pm, Room 149by Rebecca Drolen, University of Arkansas

Beyond making excellent photographs in the first place and having something to say as artists, how do we create avenues to present our work? Of course, we all want to share what we do. We hope to find kindred spirits in excited audiences, or maybe we want to stir things up. But how do we get our work out of the studio and into the world?

Hair Pieces: Ponytails and Souvenirs discusses the ever-changing vernacular of photography in the 21st century and the expansion of the traditional foundation of the medium. “Hair Pieces explores the fickle relationship most have with their body hair. We consider some hair very desirable and grow and groom it with care, while we treat other hair as shameful and cover or remove it. Once hair has become disconnected from our bodies, we treat it with disgust, yet it has an archival, last-ing presence that outlives the body and defies death and decay.”

This presentation will look at the technology of Photogrammetry, a digital technique of stitching multiple photographs of a given subject into a 3D object. Museums use image-scanning / photo-grammetry, to create 3D digital versions of their collection; art researchers visiting remote locations document object of interest generating life-like 3D documents of object; and artists are taking advantage of the software to create artwork that can exist physically as 2D prints, a 3D print, or remain in digital format.

An Anonymous Battle will explore the role of the Muslim woman in a changing Islamic society in order to grasp an understanding of her life behind the veil. “No longer tolerating the suppression of sexuality in the Islamic society, a Revolution has emerged from behind the veils in many Islamic countries. Society’s fight over what is right and wrong, associated to the domain of both tradition and modernity, has shaped women’s mind over time.”

An Anonymous Battle 2:30 - 3:20pm, Room 158by Fazilat Soukhakian, Utah State University

“The camera lens has a prominent role in my work, both as a collaborative player and as a supportive capturing source, at times used only for portfolio purposes. Moving image, by way of projection, can be featured as a primary or background ele-ment in my productions. Some pieces include live camera feeds as part of the presentation in order to provide alternative perspectives or enhanced visual landscapes. During the course of my pre-sentation, I will focus on the role of the lens in my work, and from there, how it filters into my stu-dents’ processes.”

SPESC 2017 Juried Presenters & Select Panels - Saturday / Sunday

Every photographer should have a journal to take notes or sketch ideas and that can fit easily into a camera bag or carry bag. This workshop will cover the techniques of binding your own leather field journal using the long stitch and link stitch. We will begin by learning the components of a bound book and then move into cutting, assembling and stitching the journal. All materials will be provid-ed on the day of the workshop. No experience required. Limited spots, to sign up, contact [email protected]

This series of presenters wll be showing works that address the ways photography can engage memory. Laura Bodden’s shadow landscapes are inspired by the idea of “homes” past and cur-rent. Alex Emmons address the vast databases of images stored in cloud and harddrive space and how they point to an entangled web present in our “real” lives. Robert Gordon uses family pho-tographs in his installation based work that shine a light on new narratives contained within the family album.

A workshop considering the expanded vocabulary of digitally produced mobile imaging as a framework for inclusive public interactions addressing the zeitgeist of normalized, viral violence. In a 2 hour workshop, we will discuss these issues and work with participants to create a volume of handmade artist zines that will utilize instant film image making as a conduit for talking about these topics. Each participant will then take home their personal completed volume. Proceeds from sales will enable us to fund community engagement workshops in the future. Dedication

SPESC remembers and honors the loss of an esteemed artist and friend, Mike Peven. Mike was a long-term, contributing member of SPE and the head of the Photography Department at the University of Arkansas for 40 years. He was named the Honored Educator at the 2014 Regional Conference in Murfreesboro, TN. His pro-found contributions to Photography and Book Arts are represented in hundreds of exhibitions spanning four decades and work held in private and museum collections internationally. Mike Peven’s legacy is carried forward in his artwork and through the countless photographers he inspired through his dedication to teaching.- Rebecca Drolen, University of Arkansas
