Technology Menu May 11th - 22nd

Choose one activity to complete each day from this menu. VCS would love to see your work! You can text a picture to my google voice number or post your work in your portfolio in Class Dojo.

Internet Safety: What is the main difference between https & http? Take a minute to discuss this important internet safety information with family members.

Poetry: The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the CPU, over to the keyboard to see what he could do. With a URL here and click there on the monitor his search did appear. And much to his surprise, the Web he had found. So when you are asked "What was the spider doing on the computer"? You can say "He was simply searching the Web". Your turn!

Game Time: Have everyone stand up and either put their hands on their heads or their "tail". Flip a coin and announce what side the coin lands on. If it lands on heads, everyone with their hands on their heads is out and must sit down. If it lands on tails, everyone with their hands on their tail is out and must sit down. Repeat until only one person remains.

Poster: Draw a poster of a map of your home and neighborhood. Then call a family meeting and share your poster with family members. Have everyone decide on a safe place for the entire family to meet in an emergency.

Vocabulary: Each day a person hears anywhere between 20,000 & 30,000 words. Make a list of all the technology related words you hear today. After creating your list, try to describe or define each word you have written down.

Computer Letter: Write a letter to your computer titled "What if humans had to leave the Earth and no one remembered to turn off the last robot”. Explain to your computer how to Bluetooth into the robot to turn it off and save the day.

Binary Math: Do the base two math and solve the amount shown. One is On/True and Zero is Off/False. Add only the digits that are on. - 8 4 2 1

Students Choice: Chose an activity to help you practice keyboarding by touch. Write down what you did, and if it is helping.

Data Project: Flip a coin 10 times. Each time the coin lands heads up write down the letter "H". Each time the coin lands tails up write down the letter "T". Once you have flipped the coin 10 times, identify which outcome is most likely based on your data.

Imagination: Architects plan and design building for various uses. Create plans for a treehouse that you can live in for a long period of time. Be sure to add important details that make your treehouse unique.

Sign Language: Test your sign language by solving the puzzle below.

Sing-A-Long: I have a mouse. I play with every day. He runs across the mat and his tail is long and gray. He doesn't like cheese. He likes playing games. He's not afraid of cats. He hasn't got a name. He's my computer mouse. He's my double click, single click, run around the mat computer mouse. Left click, right click. OK. Your turn!

Problem Solving: What is the expected number of coin flips until you get two heads up in a row (HH)? And a heads followed by a tail (HT)?

Sound Search: Sit silently for 15 minutes while you write down every sound you hear. When you are done, classify the sounds by identifying the following. Is the sound high or low pitched? Is the sound high or low volume? Is the sound manmade or naturally occurring?

Prototype Design: Design Engineers research and develop new ideas. Create a protective uniform for a superhero that can withstand superhero duties like flying through the air.

Good Reads: Create a cover to a book that you are reading or have read. Remember to create your book cover using the main idea of the story.

Putting the Pieces Together: What force and strength cannot get through, I with a gentle touch and turn can do. I can be found on a keyboard, or on a ring. Can you guess what I am?

Sometimes the Same: Use the comparing and contrast map below to compare laptops and desktop computers. Tell what things are the same about them and what is different about them.

Structural Engineer: Make a football out of paper and flick it with you finger to try and get a field goal. Follow the directions below.

Environmental Observation: Record the weather each day this week. Use the data you have collected and make a prediction or guess about what the weather will be like next week.
