The PrattCard is the only form of payment accepted at the Color Print Center. You must activate your PrattCard before printing and have enough funds available to pay for your jobs.

Basic Printing ProcedureUse these general guidelines for all printing in the CPC labs.

Xerox Printers

Everything Else

- 1 -

1. Log in to the computer using your OneKey information.2. Save your documents to the WORKSPACE: The Workspace is a local drive on the specific computer you have logged in to. Before you leave you must delete your work, or others will be able to access it.3. Open your file in its native program.4. Create a PDF and SAVE it to the WORKSPACE. Programs have varying ways to create PDFs, read on for specific instructions.5. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro. Do Not use Adobe Reader or Preview!6. Select File > Print: Click Page Set Up, under “Format For” choose your printer. Xerox printers require one of the available options, but for all other printers you may create a custom page size. Be sure to use the correct orientation for custom page sizes, where the width of the page size is not wider than the roll width otherwise your print may be scaled down to fit the roll.7. In the Print dialog box, select the printer you plan to use. You may select double-sided printing here, Xerox printers only! See page 9.8. Make sure your file looks correct inside the preview panel. 9. Click Advanced, then select Color Management. Color handling must be set to Let Acrobat Manage Colors. For Xerox color printers, you must select Phaser 7760 as the output profile. Click OK.

- 2 -

.

10. Click Print and wait for the Pharos popup window.

11. Enter your OneKey username in the popup window, Click Print.

12. Wait for the Pharos Notify pop up window, select Yes once you accept the charges.

13. Proceed to the Release Station. First Log in to your OneKey account & then swipe your Pratt ID card. ALWAYS enter your OneKey information before swiping your ID card.

14. You will see a release queue with all the jobs you have sent to print. Select each file one at a time and click print. Selecting multiple files and releasing at once may cause some files to not print. Your file will process and print in the order in which it was released. You are charged as soon as you hit print from the release station. Files not released will not print, and you will not be charged. All queued files are deleted at the en of the day.

You must notify the Monitor if you are releasing any Specialty Prints after you accept the charges and

release the print job.

PLEASE NOTE:The larger your file size, the longer it will take for your job to RIP (process) & print.

Be aware of your file size &Please be patient...

- 3 -

Always:

Use the correct page size: Always chose “Format For” and select the printer you are printing to. Select page size from the available options. With Xerox printers you must use one of the pre-selectable options. With all other printers you may select or create a custom size. Be sure to use the correct orientation for custom page sizes, where the width of the page size (Artwork) is not wider than the Printer Roll width otherwise your print may be scaled down to fit the roll. Keep a safe margin of 1/4” on each side when designing your files.

Let the Program manage colors: The CPC workflow is designed allowing the program (Acrobat Pro, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) to manage colors. Selecting printer manage colors will produce unintended results.

Outline Fonts: Outlining fonts ensure that no type will drop out while the file is being processed. If you do not outline your fonts it is possible that they will not print accurately.

Understand Color Management: For best results, send files to print in CMYK color spaces. The Epson and Roland printers take standard U.S. Web coated (SWOP) V2. The Xerox printers use the Phaser 7760 output profile.

Print 300 dpi to 400 dpi: Printing at lower resolutions produces poor print quality, and printing at higher resolutions needlessly increases files size and processing time.

Confirm size and orientation in the printer preview window: Your image will print exactly as shown in the preview window. If your image is clipped or improperly placed, you must fix it before printing. You can not rotate or otherwise retrieve lost data after leaving your Workstation.

Print from Acrobat Professional: This is the industry-standard print program and is designed specifically for printing. It allows you to preview (before printing) any errors and allows for the closest on-screen approximation of what the print will look like.

Save and Print PDFs: PDFs are designed to ease printing. Regardless of the program you’re using to create your files, you should always Save As/ Export as a PDF. PSD and TIFF files are needlessly large and don’t offer any extended benefits over printing PDFs. AI, INDD and other files do not embed fonts or other placed images, this can cause unexpected/ poor print results.

Log in to the Release Station BEFORE Swiping: You must always enter your OneKey username and password in to the Release Station before swiping your ID card. Swiping before logging in may cause conflicts between user accounts and disable your printing capabilities.

Leave plenty of time to print: Posters of 30” x 40” can take several hours to RIP and Print, especially during Midterms and Finals when more students are printing, the back up can be a full day. Please plan accordingly.

Color Print Center Best Practices

- 4 -

Never:Print from removable media: Printing from thumb/ flash drives, removable hard drives, and CDs produces very unpredictable and unmanageable results. Always save files to your Workspace and print from there.

Let the Printer manage colors: The CPC workflow is designed allowing the program (Acrobat Pro, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) to manage colors. Selecting printer manage colors will produce unintended results.

Send multiple pages to the oversize printers: Files with multiple pages to the oversize printers will bog down the RIP and potentially crash the printer. You will get your prints much faster if you send pages one at a time.

Specify Page Ranges: In the print dialog, choosing any specific page range other than “All Pages” may result in your job not arriving at the release station. Instead, delete pages from the PDF that you do not want to print.

Batch Release: At the Release Station you must select each job individually and hit print one at a time. Selecting many jobs and releasing all at once may cause loss of jobs.

Print from Preview or Acrobat Reader: These programs are designed for viewing on-screen only and therefore not designed to print from.

Print from Native Programs: Design and document creation programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Word, etc.) obscure obvious printing errors that would otherwise be apparent in Acrobat Professional. It is more likely to have layout and font errors when printing from Native programs. Furthermore, printing directly from InDesign will dramatically increase the file size sent to the printers and potentially crash the system.

Rotate from Photoshop print dialogue: Rotating inside the photoshop dialogue causes prints to be shrunk to fit the width of the roll. To avoid this, rotate your canvas in Photoshop so that the width is not wider than the width of the roll you are printing to.

If you need to rotate your document to fit the page size here, STOP!

Always rotate the canvas in Photoshop before printing, and always choose Portrait orientation.

If you do not follow the guidelines in this manual, we can notguarantee the quality of your prints.

Available only in IllustratorTo print with metallic ink, you must use the swatches provided in the Roland Metallic color libraries. Refer to the poster in the 501 lab for printed samples of the metallic colors. A series of metallic textures is also available in the Roland Metallic Texture System library.

1. In Illustrator, open the swatch library: Window > Swatch Libraries > Roland Metallic Color System Library.2. With the fill or stroke color of any shape selected, click on one of the color swatches to apply it.

Minus Front

Metallic Background layer after “minus front” Both Layers Showing

IMPORTANT NOTE: If any non-metallic objects are placed over metallic swatches, the metallic properties will transfer through in printing. If you want to avoid this effect, you must knock out the metallic colors from the background of any traditional CMYK object.

After Minus Front, the metallic shape no longer occupies the space behind the CMYK object, and the object will print as CMYK only.

YOU MUST CREATE A PDF AND PRINT FROM ACROBAT PRO

a. Select all objects that you wish to remain Non-Metallic. b. Copy objects to a new layer. c. Hide that layer.

d. Select all non-metallic objects and any metallic objects behind them. e. Window > Pathfinder: Click the “Minus Front” option. This will minus what’s in front from what’s in back- create a compound shape from the metallic back- ground that doesn not include the areas occupied but the objects in front.

f. Make the CMYK - Only layer visible.

Covers must be set up concerning the amount of paper needed for the spine. A book, final size 8.5” x 11”, needs a cover Longer than 17”.

To Calculate the thickness of the spine, multiply the number of sheets of paper by the paper thickness. Remember: sheet count will be half your page count if your body is printed double-sided.

Maximum Spine Thickness: 1 1/2”BlackWhiteXerox: 0.003” per sheet, 500 sheets/ book maximum.ColorBondXerox: 0.004” per sheet, 375 sheets/ book maximum.ColorGlossyXerox: 0.0045” per sheet, 333 sheets/ book maximum.ColorMatteXerox: 0.0065” per sheet, 230 sheets/ book maximum.

3D PrintingStudents can drop off their models to be printed on our 3D printer between 10 am and 4 pm

Monday through Friday. Pending approval, models will be printed and ready for pickupafter 4 pm the following day. Models dropped off on Fridays will be printed the following Monday.

We reserve the right to extend the time required to print based on the size and com-plexity of the model. This will be determined during the approval process.

Costs: Small Model $5, Medium Model $15, Large Model $25 The size and cost of your model will be determined during the approval process.

Students must fill out our “3D Print request Form” and retain receipt in order to pickup their completed 3D prints.

There are a variety of ways to create a model for 3D printing, but all models submitted for approval MUST be exported in the Stereo Lithographic format (.STL) in order to be approved. No other model types can be accepted. We will not scale your model - it will be printed in the size you submit. You should make the model the exact size you wish to print it. The maximum size is 8” x 5” x 5” (Width, Height, & Depth).

Below are instructions how to export your files as .STL from some of the most common 3D modeling software packages the W14 labs support.

Export as .STL in 3D Studio MAX Select your closed mesh or closed polysurface object and go to File > Export > Export.

- 22 -

- 23 -

Export - Set Save As type: to StereoLitho (*.STL). - In the STL options select Binary and check Selected Only, the latter of which is an alternative to using File > Export > Export Selected, which does not have the STL option. - Select OK.

Maya - Maya can not export .STL files, so you will have to use a plug-in. The W14 labs support the MultiTool plugin... it is a free plug-in that you can install on your personal version of Maya as well.- Once the MultiTool plug-in is installed you may need to enable it in the Maya Plug-in Manager.- Open Window > Settings/ Preferences > Plug-in Manager and check Loaded and Auto Load.

- Once the Plug-in is activated, select the object you want to export and select File > Export Selection.

- You can now select StereoLithography file type and Save it.

- 24 -

AutoCAD

With your file open in AutoCAD, use the (view) toolbar and select any isometric view to ensure your object is 3 dimensional.

Click the FILE drop down menu and choose EXPORT.

On the EXPORT DATA menu, choose LITHOGRAPHY > STL from the file type drop down menu and press SAVE to export.

Modeling Guidelines

Polygons OnlyOur 3D printer only understands explicit geometry. All files will be converted from .STLto gcode before being printed. This process is known as “Slicing”. This process supports very little information; Vertices, edges, normals, and scale. There is no implicit geometry like patches, nurbs or subdivision surfaces. So make sure your implicit geometry is converted to explicit polygons before sending it to us.

Turn off smooth shading while modelingSmooth shading is controlled by your software and hardware and changes the look of the geometry. Use a faceted shading method that allows you to see each polygon explicitly. This is how your model will look when printed.

No BitmapsWe can not accept bump, normal, displacement or texture maps, due again to the need for explicit geometry. If you have color variations we can not accept texture maps.

Closed GeometryAll the objects that make up your model must be closed or “Watertight”. Overlapping geometry works fine as long as there are no unattached edge.

Appropriate amount of geometryMake sure you have enough geometry on your curved surfaces to prevent faceting. This will of course depend on the size of the model you are printing.

Feature SizeIn general, long thin features are difficult to print. A rule of thumb is for every 1 mm of length a feature should be 0.5 mm thick. So, a 5 mm long robot’s antenna would beed to be about 2.5 mm in diameter to have a strong structure and not break once printed.

ScaleBe aware of the final size of the object you will be printing. Think about how large the final print will be. Don’t put too much geometry in a spot that will only be a few millimeters across. This will increase printing time and jeopardize the final product.

Structural IntegrityWill your model be able to support itself? Beware of chicken-like proportions; a large body supported by thin legs. The legs could easily break during printing from the weight of the heavy body. Although we add “Tear Away” support structures during the printing process to allow for some such structures, the best 3D prints tend to avoid this type of model.

Digital Photo Prints from the Snap Lab
