Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing

Need to know if your product is within limits for RF-exposure ?
What is SAR?
The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) isthe rate of energy absorption by bodytissues close to transmitters, likemobile phones, PDA’s, WLAN, etc.Exposure to Electro Magnetic Fields(EMF) is considered an importanthealt and safety issue. A method todefine the permissable exposure is toperform measurments to determinethe SAR levels during the use of a par-ticular RF device. SAR levels areexpressed as Watts per Kilogram(W/kg). The purpose of testing is toverify if the RF energy emitted by adevice is within permissible limits forRF exposure as defined in regulationsall over the world.
Compliance
Regulatory and standards bodiesaround the world (FCC, EU, ACA,ICNIRP) now require or have definedthe testing of RF transmitting devicesfor compliance with RF radiation safe-ty standards. All handheld or body-mounted MTE’s must be evaluatedagainst human exposure standards
which set basic restrictions for theSpecific Absorption Rate (SAR) of RFenergy by any part of the humanbody. In the USA, Europe, Australiaand other countries, the scope of theSAR evaluation includes devices suchas GSM, CDMA, DECT, PDA and somewireless (WLAN) devices.
TÜV Rheinland® SAR Testing Services
TÜV Rheinland® is the only accredit-ed test laboratory for SAR testing inthe Netherlands and can perform highquality SAR testing according to manyinternational standards. We useadvanced robotic measurement tech-nology (SARA2 from IndexSAR) tocapture two and three-dimensionalSAR distribution in human “phan-tom” models. SAR test data is present-ed in an easy to read graphical formatfor design verification and agencyapprovals. TÜV Rheinland has manyyears experience in SAR testing. Thefacility is also available for engineer-ing R&D and scientific research pur-poses.
