    Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR

PROTEIN-RICH FOOD SUPPLEMENTS FORINFANTS AND PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

    0. FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standardsstitution on 20 July 1973; after the draft finalized by the Nutritionctional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural and Foododucts Division Council.2 Since the supply of milk proteins in the country is limited, nsiderable efforts are being made to utilize vegetable proteins toht prqtein malnutrition. Consequently, a number of protein-rich foods

e now being marketed. It has, therefore, become necessary to prescribenimum requirements for protein-rich foods, for which a series ofndards is being compiled. These standards are expected to help intimum utilization of edible oilseed -flours, guide the manufacturers inrmulating their products, and ensure desired performance levels folnsumers.0.2.1 This standard, which is, the first in the series, prescribesecifications for protein-rich food supplements for infants and preschoolildren between 18 months and 5 years of age. The committeesponsible for preparing this standard felt that the time was nowportune to have’ standards based on quality evaluation of protein;rthermore, the nu,trients in food supplements for infants and preschoolildren are pract tally

dthe same, though the form in which they are

-educed, migl$i offer.0.2.2 This standard does not define any particular composition ofotein-rich food supplements for infants and preschool children. \Vithview to encouraging new formulations for these food supplements, this

andard specifies only the minimum level of nutrients in the end productnd the quality of protein. The levels of nutrients, it was felt, should beuch as to meet at least one-third of the daily requirements of a weanedhild regarding protein and calories, while meeting the entire dailyquirements of vitamins in 100 g of the food.3 While formulating this standard, necessary consideration has beenven to the relevant rules prescribed by the Government of India, undere Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954. This standard is subject

restrictions imposed under the Act and the Rules framed thereunder, herever applicable.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final valtte, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained

in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the spccificd vnlucin this standard.

    1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and t re methods ofsampling and tests for protein-rich food supplements for infants andpreschool clrildren between 18 months and 5 years of age.

    2. TERMINOLOGY2.0 For the purpose of this standnrd, the following definitions shallapply.

2.1 Type Tests - These tests are (see 3.2 ) to prove the conformity to therequirements of this standard. They are intended to approve theformulation and quality of the product at least in the beginning ofmarketing and/or certification. These tests may also be conductedperiodically to supplement the routine tests or whenever the basic formulais changed.

2.2 Routine Tests -These tests (see 3.3) are carried out on each lot tocheck the essential requirements that are likely to vary during production.

    3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Raw Materials-Raxv materials and other ingredients used in themanufacture of protein-rich foocl supplements for infants and preschc-.lchildren shall be of good quality. In particular edible oilseed flour(s),if used, shall conform to the following standards:
