CLASSROOM OBSERVATION FORM Brianna Morgan Date: 3/13/12 Class/Grade Level: SPED, 7th Teacher: Ms. Reynolds Subject Area: Reading What’s going on? (describe unit, skills, or concepts being taught) There was a small group of students who came to class to get extra support that was needed during their ELA time block. The students were working on reading comprehension skills, specifically, summarizing main ideas from a short story that was read aloud and practice with writing skills, writing simple paragraphs. What do you think the objectives are for this lesson? I think the objectives for this lesson were for students to work to improve their reading comprehension skills by practicing the summarizing strategy. Students also got to practice their writing skills by working on constructing a simple paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting details. What kind of instructional methods is the teacher using? *Small group direct teaching *Electronic media/computer/powerpoint *Seatwork What kind of instructional resources are being used? *worksheets What information literacy skills are/could be integrated into this lesson? The reading comprehension strategy, practicing summarizing was being used in this lesson. A more formal read aloud could be integrated into the lesson also just as another activity to do and to help students really understand the strategy of summarizing. What classroom management techniques did you observe (during instruction, during direction giving, during work time, during transitions) which established a productive working environment? Ms. Reynolds gave a lot of positive reinforcement during instruction and work time. She redirected unwanted behaviors with positives-what she wanted to see the students doing during class, how she wanted them to behave in a positive way, not attacking students or saying, “Stop” “Do this…etc. Ms. Reynolds also gave the students clear, simple, small directions so that they could complete tasks easier and not be confused. She pointed out the good things students were doing and focused on those. She encouraged participation and positivity. This also goes in line with the school wide Nurtured Heart initiative.
