Background Information:
The /l/ sound in blends is a sound that is typically produced correctly once a child is 6 years of age.
Here is a chart of when sounds are typically produced.
![Page 4: Speech and Language Virtual Learning /l/ Blends Speech](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051600/6280010a5c0a6f1d772a9ab4/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
The L speech phoneme is a voiced or noisy sound. It has air that comes over the sides of
the tongue and is a long, continuous sound. The tongue is touching the bumps right behind your
top front teeth.
Here is a video that demonstrates how to make the L sound. Once you can make the L by itself,
then you can use that sound in blends.
How do I make the L sound?
![Page 5: Speech and Language Virtual Learning /l/ Blends Speech](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051600/6280010a5c0a6f1d772a9ab4/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Saying the L sound:Put your tongue on the bumps behind your top teeth
making an uphill with your tongue. Let air flow over the sides of the tongue. Have your voice box turned on to
make the sound noisy.
Saying the L blend sounds:
A consonant blend may consist of two or three letters whose sounds are blended together. Each sound within
the blend is pronounced individually, but quickly, so they blend together.

Let’s find out exactly what a blend is.Watch this video about consonant blends.
Remember, to say an L sound in a blend, you will say the first sound of the word
then quickly move to the L and the rest of the word.

Tricky L Blends:
Be careful when you’re saying the blend. Sometimes it’s easy to put an “uh” between the first sound and the L. For example sometimes for the word “play” you might say “P uh L ay”
instead of “PLay”.
When that happens, try saying the first sound and the L a bit faster so it blends together.
