The Founder of Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School, Mr. William (Bill) Nimmo, loved verse and wrote poetry.
He taught his students instructional poems he believed provided sound advice to assist them through life,
such as the one below.
Every Speech Day all Year Six students repeat verse three from the poem ‘I AM TRUE TO MYSELF.’
I AM TRUE TO MYSELF by Edgar Guest
I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don’t want to stand, with the setting sun,
and hate myself for things I have done.
I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about myself,
And fool myself, as I come and go, into
thinking that nobody else will know the
kind of man I really am,
I don’t want to dress up myself as sham.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men’s respect;
But here in the struggle for fame and pelf
I want to be able to like myself.
I don’t want to look at myself and know,
That I’m bluster and bluff and empty show.
I can never hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see;
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself, and so,
whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscious-free.
ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
for we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gift,
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage,
Advance Australia Fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
“Advance Australia Fair!”
COOGEE PREP SCHOOL SONG
Lads who surely know what sport is
Boys who only know what thought is
Tiger, fox and steady tortoise
Coogees face the foe.
Some of us are clever
Most of us endeavour
Not to yearn, the while we learn
For anything that work and us would sever.
Still what e’er the day may bring us
Patted backs or trials that greet us
Here’s the song we’ll always sing as
Coogees face the foe.
Three cheers for the black, gold and blue
May our victories ever be new
But defeat only makes us shout the louder
Three cheers for the black, gold and blue!

Headmaster’s Welcome 2018
Mr Stuart Brown - Old Boy 1974 and Board Member and guest of honour, Mr Barry Collins OAM (Old Boy 1948) and guest of honour, special guests Mr Geoffrey Davison - Coogee Prep Patron, Emeritus Professor Rhonda Davison AM, Mr Allan Nicholas Brown – second CPS Headmaster, Ms Dinah Ginis – CPS Board Member, CPS staff, ladies and gentlemen, boys, siblings and friends, welcome to Speech Day 2018.
Today marks the final occasion in our school calendar. We are honoured to welcome our guest speaker Mr Stuart Brown, the son of Mr Allan Nicholas Brown, Coogee Prep’s second Headmaster- The Browns’ are our only fourth generation Coogee Prep family. Mr Stuart Brown is CEO at Black Wall Property Group and WOTSO Work Space, he is an Old Boy of Coogee Prep and The Scots College, studied Property Law and is a Director of Coogee Prep. Mr Brown has played grade rugby for Randwick Rugby Club, is a passionate surfer and travelled extensively both here and abroad. It is wonderful to have both Stuart and his father with us today. Today we celebrate the achievements of all Coogee Prep boys, Kindergarten to Year Six and bid farewell to our Year Six students who leave us to commence their high school journey. Speech Day is the most important event in the School’s calendar, as it gives us the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the boys’ achievements throughout the year. We also look at the enormous contribution and role the teaching and parent body (P&F) play to reach this point. It takes the involvement of many to achieve what makes this School the unique place that it is. Today is not only a time for reflection on the year, it is a time to project forward. It is a time to leverage the good will, progress and positive change, which will continue to drive a clear vision steering the School well into the future. At the heart of this vision is a student-centred, value-driven education formed around a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum. As educators, our goal is to nurture and develop boys into students who are motivated, enjoy learning, and who go on to fulfil their potential as they move into high school and beyond. It is this combination of knowledge and academic skills attained in a contemporary environment, underpinned by traditional values and an emphasis on strength of character that form the core of the education experience at Coogee Prep. I commend the CPS Staff for their dedication and commitment in ensuing that these goals are met, and the School continues to grow from strength to strength. Through the development of differentiated and comprehensive programs and co-curricular activities, we are able to help all students to recognise and ultimately realise their academic, sporting and personal potential. Through exposing students to the creative and practical arts, we are able to help the boys express themselves creatively, develop new skills and build confidence through group work, competition and performance.
The success our boys experience in all areas can be measured not only by credible academic and sporting results, but also by
excellent preparation and a huge growth in confidence even when faced with the toughest of challenges. On behalf of the Coogee Prep Community, I extend our appreciation to The Scots College, for allowing us to use this Auditorium for Speech Day again this year. I wish the Coogee Prep community a very Merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday and all the very best for 2019.
Mr John T. Dicks Headmaster
Gentleman
Coogee Prep’s philosophy adopts the traditional values of hard work, self-discipline and respect for others. This
ethos is encouraged in all students. The School Motto ‘Gentleman, Scholar, Sportsman’ captures the essence of
the ‘all-round’ education Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School offers every student.
The current Year Six boys have grown in confidence over the past seven years and are a group of fine young men.
It is their experiences at Coogee Prep that prepare them to take on the next stage of their lives with enthusiasm
and determination. 2018 Year Six are indeed wonderful ambassadors for Coogee Prep, as they prepare to enter
their chosen High Schools in 2019
As an integral part of preparing the boys for high school and beyond, Year Six students take on leadership roles
within the School. We would like to congratulate the boys on performing these roles so well. They have proven
themselves to be leaders amongst their peers as well as excellent role models for the younger boys.

Coogee Prep is dedicated to promoting a high level of academic achievement. We continue to perform well in all
external testing including entrance to Secondary High Schools. It is always pleasing to receive positive feedback
from Senior School Headmasters on the readiness of Coogee Prep. Boys for the challenges of high school.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing was conducted for all Year Three and Year Five students in Government and
Non-Government Schools nationally in May this year. The testing focuses on assessing the numeracy and
literacy knowledge and skills of students.
Coogee Prep performed well above the state average in the recent NAPLAN testing. The boys should be
commended on their excellent performance.

Performing Arts
The Performing Arts Festival dominated the Primary Music Program this year. Our item which was a medley of several well-known songs, highlighted the amazing talent present within the School. Apart from the 80+ CPS Choir, there were solo vocalists, a guitarist, a drummer, a ukulele player, a beatboxer, boys using cups and the Select Choir involved in what was an amazing and inclusive performance. The boys thoroughly enjoyed their time in the spotlight and should be congratulated for producing a most memorable experience for all who viewed it. Special thanks to Mrs Annette Black and My Jay Jacob for their organisation and creativity in producing a spectacular performance.
The annual School Concert took place at The Scots College. There were a record number of individual performers which reinforces that depth of the talent at CPS. The Infants’ Choir performed three of their favourite songs and each class entertained us with an individual item. Kindergarten performed ‘Just Dance’, Year One played the djembes and Year Two made use of the tuned and untuned percussion instruments. The select Choir performed a well-known Adele song and the concert concluded with a whole school performance of ‘Lean on Me’. Thank you to Ms Gershon, Mrs Black and Mr Jacob for their assistance in preparing the boys for the concert.
Peer Support 2018 has been a big year for our Peer Support program. This peer-led, skills-based program is an important learning program for our senior leaders and how they interact towards their peers. This program also helps all boys K-6 interact with each other in a positive way throughout the school. This year the Peer Support program was linked with our new Bounce Back social and emotional wellbeing program in a unit called 'Moving Forward'. This unit focussed on student’s strengths and personal qualities and how they can employ a range of strategies in challenging situations. The unit incorporated developing skills in planning, resilience, coping and communication. The program was taught once a week throughout Term 2 and into Term 3. The Year 6 leaders were challenged to consider how they would teach these concepts to multi-age groups. They learned some valuable skills in communication and planning.
Scholar
Student Representative Council 2018 has been another big year for the SRC.
Term One saw the introduction of our social and emotional awareness programs Bounce Back and Peer Support introduced across the School. The SRC was involved in discussions about how this related to school rules, policies and playground behaviour. It was a great term to reflect on what was working so far and how we could help improve the overall feeling around the school.
Term Two started with a push for Kit Bag for Kids. This is a charity whose aim is to "To improve the health of all Australian children by enabling their full participation in sport, irrespective of socio-economic background, through the provision of sporting kit and equipment." This was an ongoing campaign throughout Terms Two and Three where we successfully collecting a range of sporting clothing and shoes. We also participated in Pirate Day- a charity we joined forces with to help raise awareness for childhood cancer research. Many a corny pirate joke was told that day!
Term Three was undoubtedly a big term for the SRC. Parts of Australia were in the grip of a severe drought and a young primary aged boy dreamed up the concept of raising much-needed funds to help farmers through his Fiver for a Farmer campaign. This was a huge success and Coogee Prep helped raise a significant amount of money while enjoying dressing up as a farmer for a day. CPS also dug deep for Jeans for Genes day and everyone showed their support by enjoying a mufti day. We also had the pleasure of having a member of Randwick Council's Waste Education Management Department come to CPS and speak to Mr Gowland and Noah Nunn in Year One, who was excited about helping CPS start our own War on Waste and how we could help recycle rubbish in our local parks.
In Term Four we supported the Pretty Flipped campaign through an awareness-raising day concentrating on flipping the way our society values girls and making a commitment to valuing them from the inside rather than the outside. An important and worthy cause for us to be involved in! We finished off the year with a Christmas campaign supporting Barnardos.
Well done to all the boys who were involved in the SRC in 2018. Thank you for your commitment and intriguing discussions throughout the year.

Sport
Sport continues to be an integral part of life at Coogee Prep. It promotes teamwork, sportsmanship,
communication, acceptance and inclusion. Our inclusive approach to sport gives each boy the opportunity to participate and develop his skills. All coaches witnessed the boys develop during the year and look forward to further growth in their nominated sport in 2019. We thank and congratulate all our coaches for the commitment they showed to their teams and parents who transported their sons to sport every Saturday and supported them at games and carnivals.
The 2018 Sports Program highlighted the sporting prowess and skills of many Coogee Prep boys on the field, in the pool and on the track. We also thank the team at ‘Transform - Us’ for running our School PE program again this year. Coogee Prep students were involved in a variety of sporting events throughout the year including Inter-School and CPS competitions. The following pages highlight and acknowledge the boys’ sporting achievements in 2018.

Saturday Sport – Summer 2018
The 2018 Summer Sport Season was extremely successful, with fantastic results across all codes. This year we
competed in a senior Touch Football competition for the first time with excellent results within both the A and B
teams. We also saw success within all Basketball divisions as the sport continues to build across the school.
Cricket also gained momentum as we look to build from one to two CPS cricket teams into 2019.

Co-Curricular 2018
The Co-curricular program focuses on Sport, ICT and Music for students in Years Four – Six. In supporting the school’s motto and academic curriculum, the co-curricular activities provide a platform on which students grow into healthy, capable and confident young men. The range of programs provide students a pathway to develop their talent and skills in a safe, informative and friendly environment. The activities are directed towards character development and unique learning opportunities for valuable life lessons and universal values, teamwork, self-discipline and hard work. This also helps the transition into high school allowing the boys to widen their view on school activities. Activities in 2018 included: Sailing - Tackers course. Learning to have fun on the water, Tricks, Techniques and learning to race. Golf - Learning the fundamentals, Driving, Putting, Chipping and game play. Tennis – Students work through levelled group-based lessons focussing on stoke correction, serving and games strategies. Coding/Robotics – ICT Stem program. In small groups students work designing, making and presenting projects. Art - Exploring paper mâché and students created some amazing hot air balloon designs. Rock Climbing - The concept of levelling was introduced to the students as they developed their skills to tackle progressively harder climbs. Lawn Bowls - The crackerjack Bob McDonald showcased his knowledge for bowling skill development as he guided the group around the green for an unforgettable lawn bowls experience. All activities are taught by qualified Coaches/Pros and supervised by CPS staff.

Staff Vote of Thanks
Mrs Rachel Mitchell (Kindergarten and Head of Infants), for bringing leadership and guidance to the Infants’ department through her collegiality and example and instilling in young minds a strong foundation for their future learning.
Mrs Alanna Kogias who stepped into the role of Kindergarten Teacher whilst Mrs Mitchell was on maternity leave, completed the year guiding our Kinder boys to great success. Her teaching passion spilled over into the classroom where boys experienced both theoretical, practical and creative lessons and are ready to tackle the exciting challenges of Year 1.
Mrs Yvette Foster (Year One Teacher), for her professional approach and caring nature towards her students, successfully developing their early Numeracy and Literacy skills through a range of exciting and innovative learning experiences. I extend my gratitude to Yvette for taking on the role of Infants Co-ordinator whilst Rachel was on maternity leave.
Ms Rebecca Bown (Year Two Teacher), who brings patience and dedication in preparing her boys for the primary years by offering the opportunities to not only excel academically but express themselves creatively. Also, to Miss Nicole Thrasy who takes Year 2 on a Friday – thank you for doing such a marvellous job. The boys were very lucky to have two wonderful teachers looking after them.
Mr Matthew Sarkies (Year Three Teacher), for his consistent and positive classroom routines and bringing a nurturing and compassionate approach to his classroom management, which has instilled in the boys a growing maturity and self-confidence, preparing them well for the move into Year 4.
Mr Matthew O’Connor (Year Four Teacher), who brings humour, enthusiasm, guidance and support to his classroom, where he instills a love of learning and a desire to strive for greatness. His well organised, creative classroom allows the boys to work well on either structured or more free-flowing lessons and set them up to be leaders of the senior classes.
Mr Elliot Davis (Year Five Teacher) for his methodical and structured approach within the classroom to promote independence, self-direction and an attitude of hard work in his students and for the leadership and direction he has placed on the performing arts in areas of debating and public speaking. His love of literature and STEM initiatives inspire the boys to really enjoy the learning process.
Mr Jason Wren Pattison (Year 6 Teacher) for his all-encompassing skills knowledge and understanding in preparing our senior boys for Year 7. His focus in promoting self-initiative, independence, time management and creative thinking within the boys ensures they build the skills, confidence and competency necessary to tackle the challenges and rigor of High School learning. I commend him for his leadership in curriculum development this year.
Mr Stephen Dicks (Indonesian Teacher and Senior Learning Support) continued to open up the boy’s minds to the history, language and culture on Indonesia, fostering in the boys an appreciation for cultures other than our own, along with the learning support work in Maths and English for the Primary boys who needed extra assistance.
Miss Nicole Thrasy ( Learning Support) has capably and effectively facilitated both Primary and Infants learning support programs predominantly in the area of Literacy with a major focus on our Pre, Mini, Multi and MaQ Lit Programs. She has had a significant impact on student literacy, learning and skill development throughout this year.
Mrs Stephanie Stelter has been working in Learning Support and Library and working with Infants focusing on the formal structures of Literacy. Her major role in the Library has seen many fascinating and informative literary initiatives, including research, book studies and a well organised borrowing system.
Mr Ryan Gowland (Head of Pastoral Care and Student/Staff Welfare) has displayed great initiative in promoting pastoral care and welfare throughout the school and incorporating programs such as Peer Support, Bounce Back and Circle Time school-wide. His leadership of the SRC has seen a greater level of community awareness and involvement throughout the School. The outcomes he achieved in the senior Leadership program working alongside Mr Wren Pattison has given our Year Six boys clearer vision of what it means and takes to be an effective leader.
Once again, I acknowledge Ms Kerry Gershon, with the utmost respect and admiration for what she does and brings to the Coogee Prep family on a daily basis. Her exceptional leadership as Deputy Head embraces the support and pastoral care of both staff and students alike, this along with her meticulous attention to administrative detail ensures life at Coogee Prep runs as smoothly as possible. I thank her for her continued loyalty, commitment and support, not only to the School but to me in what has been a very challenging year
Mrs Tessa Morris, in the Office is the administrative heart-beat of our School, monitoring the comings and goings, keeping the data base and roll books up to date and those endless lines of communication open. As Registrar of the School, she coordinates school tours and admissions, ensuring the smooth transition of new families into our community and also co-ordinates the activities of the Old Boys’ Union. She ensure the efficient operation of the School at every level, in particular, by keeping me on track and making sure I attend to the important tasks of the day.
Mrs Annette Black began this year carrying out various administrative roles to assist Mrs Morris in the office. As the Semester progressed in a Teachers Aid capacity, she worked alongside Miss Thrasy in the areas of Mini and Multi Lit for Infants and coordinated the Infants’ magic words. She maintains the SENTRAL database to ensure that student records are kept up to date.
I would like to congratulate our Performing Arts team of Ms Kerry Gershon, Mrs Annette Black and Mr Jay Jacobs. Ms Gershon coordinates the infants’ component and individual performers for our school concert, whilst Mrs Black and Mr Jacobs facilitate the primary performances and the annual school music video. This year the Primary boys excelled at the IPSHA Performing Arts Festival thanks to the hard work and dedication of the team.
Mr Matthew O’Connor and Mr Campbell Foss have continued to efficiently coordinate the CPS sports program at Inter and Intra School levels. They ensure that IPSHA draws for the Saturday Sport program and School carnivals run smoothly and competitively. Mr O’Connor has coordinated the co-curricular program for years 4 – 6 in terms one and four with great success.
Mr Bob McDonald has once again fulfilled his multiplicity of tasks and duties around the School with great competence and commitment. He runs the Uniform Shop, controls traffic crossing, coordinating a clean school environment, doing the banking and many other behind the scenes jobs makes him most valuable member of our team.
I commend the “After School Care” team of Miss Sarah Ciftci, Mr Bob McDonald, Mr Stephen Dicks, Miss Danielle Thrasy and Mr Joe Merrion and Mrs Annette Black for providing a caring and enjoyable service for all boys who attend. They ensure that the boys complete homework and enjoy their down-time after a busy school day. Thank you all!
Ultimately, I have achieved my goal in having the best team of professionals and administrators collectively.

Parents and Friends Association 2017/2018
It’s hard to believe we have reached the end of another school year, and almost the end of 2018. We are extremely fortunate at Coogee Prep to have such an active school community that give so generously in so many ways. This year we have had an amazing group of class parents who have worked tirelessly over the year to support our events. We are very grateful and thankful for all your assistance. We also wish to thank the teachers and school staff for your support. The Coogee Prep P&F calendar is always a busy one, and this year has been no exception. Thank you to everyone for supporting all our events; from raffles to breakfasts and morning teas, to pizza nights and Fun Food Fridays, together with the Crazy Camel Art Fundraiser, our own private movie screening at the Ritz, and the very popular gelato cart. Your support, your attendance and your generosity are the reasons why these events have been so successful, and for that we are incredibly appreciative. I’d like to make a special mention of the annual fundraiser, Stars of the Screen Trivia, held in August at the Coogee Bay Hotel. What an entertaining evening this was with fantastic trivia, amazing costumes, games, and fabulous auctions items. Thanks again to our MC Kourosh Keshavarz and our lovely auctioneer Emma Garret Brown. Special mention also to Alla Serhan for her general enthusiasm, creation of the invitation and support, and to Chris and Tori Cheung for their generosity with the venue. Thank you to everyone who so generously donated prizes and their time to make it such a huge success. We are thrilled to report that in 2018 the P&F’s fundraising activities have resulted in a profit of approximately $29,000 which is an incredible achievement for such a small school community. This has allowed the P&F to purchase a new catalogue system and shelving for the library, new iPads, carpet for the infants’ floor, and a new school sign for Abbey Street, as well as funding the Sculptures by the Sea Excursion for all the boys. It has been a great privilege to be part of the Coogee Prep P&F Executive along with Nicky Crewe and Natasha Fielding, who have both worked tirelessly to ensure all our events are such a success. Nicky and I have now completed our two-year term and will be handing over to Emma Brown Garrett and her committee. Natasha will remain as treasurer for another term. We wish them all the very best. Our thanks to the whole Coogee Prep community, parents, boys, teachers and school staff for all your support and generosity that have made the last twelve months such a pleasure. The success of our events are due to each and every one of you.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas & fantastic New Year. Anita Comyn
