THE ADVANTAGES AND THE DISADVANTAGES OF
EARLY MARRIAGE FOR ADOLESCENTS

Adolescents
WHO identifies:
1. The period in human growth and
development that occurs after childhood
and before adulthood (from ages 10 to19).
2. The onset of puberty:
- Biological
- Psychosocial
- Emotional development.
Marriage• The union of a man and a woman who make a
permanent and exclusive commitment to each other of the type that is naturally (inherently) fulfilled by bearing and rearing children together.
Early Marriage in Several Countries• More than 60 million girls marry under the age of 18 around the
world (The United Nations Child Summit Declaration, and the Child Rights Act state)
• The percentages of adolescents married before the age of 18:
- Niger 77% - Mali 77%- Ethiopia 50% (before the age of 15)- Quarter of all females in Yemen (before the age of 15)- In Indonesia:
- South Kalimantan 9% (before the age of 15)- West Java 7,5%- North Kalimantan 7%- Bali 6,5%- The Middle East of Kalimantan 52,1% (15-19 years
old)- West Java 50,2%- South Kalimantan 48,4%- Bangka Belitung 47,9%- The Middle East of Sulawesi 46,3%.
The Minimum Age of Marriage In Some Rules
• Is regulated by certain rules in Islam:- Children must reach puberty and maturity (Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt)- Intellectual and physical maturity and a woman’s credible permission (ministers, politicians and scholars from almost 50 Muslim states)
• The minimum age of marriage to 17 or 18 (The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women)
• The minimum age of marriage for male 19 and16 for female (Regulation about Marriage Chapter II Pasal 7, ayat 1).
Advantages of Early Marriage• Keep us from adultery and immoral acts• Financial support• More energetic, work harder for better
future• A chance of adulthood
The Disadvantages of Early Marriage
1. Reproduction system
Premature
Hemorrhage
The risk of death in pregnancy
Cervical-cancer
Womb-cancer
HIV-AIDS
2. Educational effect
Drop-out
Lose out on achieving higher education
Difficult to attain a high-paying job
3. Maturity
- Missing out on their youth when having to deal with adult duties
- Difficult to follow their original dreams and aspirations when faced with the responsibility of taking care of their home and family.
- Emotional-changing
5. Social-relationship
- Losing the harmonization in each family
- Eliminated from their friendship
- Divorce
