Executive Summary
After diligent research on independently owned businesses in the US, small businesses
make up for more than 50% of US sales. They dominate our market and are a huge contributor to
our nations GDP. Many of the business professionals operating small companies do not have
knowledge in filing their taxes properly and do not have the financial capital to afford a financial
advisor. Consequently, there is an opportunity to provide these business owners with a reliable
and timesaving solution.
We will target small business owners that have difficulty organizing the necessary
documentation required for taxation along with owners that have little disposable income. Our
definition of a small business is a company with 100 employees or less. SpeedyTax will pursue
the transaction industry, heavily focusing on technologically savvy business owners.
Our product, SpeedyTax, is a fully integrated system that captures every sale and
properly organizes the information into an external document. The information is protected in a
file that arranges each transaction and prepares it for tax filing at year-end. Customers are given
the option to pay an additional fee to have our software file the documentation for them. We are
a full service taxation system. In addition, business owners have the ability to check the external
transaction document. Through user’s private and secured login, customers have access from any
location and can view their financials off-site.
Our product will provide a viable solution to the point of sale frustrations incurred in
daily transactional business. To help consumers understand the substantial value of our product,
we intend to infiltrate technology retails stores with educated representatives. In our
commercialization plan, we expect to start out by targeting Best Buy and Apple retail stores.
Representatives will be well versed in SpeedyTax’s point of difference and give potential
customers the opportunity to try the software through a portable tablet. By educating retail
employees, they will be able to thoroughly explain our product to potential consumers and drive
the selling point of our additional value.

Stage 0: Discovery
Opportunity Statement
There are 23 million small and/or family owned businesses in the US, which account for
54% of all US sales (Small Business Administration). For the fiscal year of 2013, income taxes
for these businesses were $311,993,954 and 60% of these taxpayers paid professionals to prepare
their tax returns (Internal Revenue Service). Small businesses often do not have the disposable
income to hire a credible tax professional to file their taxes. With this, we are hoping to provide
business professionals running small companies with a solution to their tax preparation needs.
We are targeting businesses in the sales industry that have updated transaction technology. Our
intention is to provide these businesses with a reliable and timesaving solution to their
frustrations with filing taxes through a simple tax calculation system.
We will be pursuing the purchasing and transaction industries that rely heavily on point
of sale systems to complete their daily sales and operations. Examples of this include clothing
retailers, restaurants, service providers, et cetera. Small businesses are ideal for this product
offering because they cannot afford to spend money on financial advisors and accountants.
Beyond this, if these small businesses fall victim to submitting incorrect taxes, they will be
penalized with losing their refund and serving potential jail time (Intuit). Small companies do not
have the financial capital to survive if these circumstances arise. This tax calculation system is
very preventative to these irreparable mistakes.
Current solutions to this need are CPA’s, financial advisors and current tax software.
Inadequacies of these solutions include the tendencies for businesses to get behind on their
bookkeeping and the continual expense of paying a financial advisor for their service as opposed
to the one-time expense of a transaction system. According to Forbes, “in practice, most of the
650,000 CPAs available to represent a business are really not qualified” (Forbes). The IRS also
claims that many of the financial advisors hired for tax preparation “prey on unsuspecting
taxpayers, and the result can be fraud or identity theft” (Internal Revenue Service). Penalties for
taxes being done incorrectly include accuracy-related penalties, civil fraud penalties and failure
to file penalties.
Fraud statistics reveal small businesses lack the resources to implement internal controls
and pay for the financial services that provide oversight of the businesses (Business Studies
3
Journal). The intent of the tax calculation system is to address the needs of small businesses in
the pursuit of financial success and streamline the transaction process for retailers’ bookkeeping.
Stage 1: Scoping
Target Market Our target market is small business owners, which accounts for 54% of all US sales (Small
Business Administration). We define a small business as a company with 100 employees or less
that generates annual revenue of $3.5 million. We intend to focus on the market segment of
companies using up to date transaction technology such as computers or tablets. This segment of
the market is applicable for SpeedyTax transaction software because they are more
knowledgeable, tech savvy and willing to diversify with their business methods.
Competitive Analysis
SpeedyTax will be entering the tax preparation industry. Within this industry, there are
several current solutions, including, CPA’s, financial advisors and tax preparation software. This
being said, our main competitor within the industry will likely be TurboTax. Business insights
reported that TurboTax held 55.4% of the market share for the online tax preparation industry in
2013 (Business Insights). TurboTax coaches its customers step by step in the tax preparation and
filing process to help them get their taxes done accurately and get the best return (TurboTax).
SpeedyTax is an income tax preparation software that gives small business owners the
ability to calculate taxes on their own. However, for an additional fee, SpeedyTax will file its
customers’ taxes for them. The feature that differentiates us from our competitors is our
software’s ability to organize the components of the tax filing process per transaction at the point
of sale. This software structures its client’s tax information into an organized system that saves
automatically with each transaction and prepares taxes for the filing process. SpeedyTax archives
all previous tax filings for quick retrieval and point of reference by business owners. This point
of difference adds great value to our target market of small businesses. SpeedyTax’s point of sale
taxation feature is valuable because it increases accuracy and consolidates all of the client’s
information. From our qualitative research, we discovered that it is imperative for us to properly
communicate our point of difference to effectively capture our market.

Internal Evaluation Top Concept: SpeedyTax Software
Fit: SpeedyTax software is a compatible solution to our identified opportunity of a
simplified tax organization and calculation system. Small business owners can benefit through
the convenience of our software, as it would satisfy their unmet consumer need of an on-site tax
preparation method.
Technical Feasibility: Because we are targeting companies that are technologically
current, we believe that SpeedyTax software will provide a realistic and beneficial solution.
Business owners understand the benefit of a convenient, on-site tax system that provides their
financial statements per transaction. Small business owners are very involved in the day-to-day
operations of their business and invested in the status of their financials. We foresee an issue
concerning the usability of our software for cash transactions in that businesses would have to
manually input the sale into the software, as opposed to credit card transactions. Based on
research and comparison data with our competitor, TurboTax, SpeedyTax software is a viable
and more integrated product offering. TurboTax is currently used by many small businesses
through their “TurboTax Business” software offering, so we believe our software will be
technically feasible.
Profitability: In order to determine the profitability of our software, we compared SpeedyTax
to TurboTax and Microsoft. Although these companies do not offer the same product, they give
us a benchmark for tax preparation and software pricing and market share. As previously stated,
TurboTax held 55.4% of the market share for the online tax preparation industry in 2013
(Business Insights). A Forbes article reported in 2013 that, “Microsoft has 95% market share in
the productivity software market, 75% share in the operating system market and approximately
75% share in the server software market” (Forbes). In the online tax preparation industry, we
would like to capture 0.005% of the 35 million online tax filers upon entry. With growth, we
intend for our point of difference to increase our market share to about 6% by year 10, which
equates to $2.1 million tax filers.
5
Second Concept: SpeedyTax Hardware
Fit: SpeedyTax hardware, a cash register with a USB port, is a compatible solution to our
identified opportunity of a simplified tax organization and calculation system. Small business
owners that do not have the resources to purchase current technology can benefit from the
convenience of our hardware, as it would satisfy their unmet need of an on-site tax preparation
method.
Feasibility: Many small business owners face the issue of installed base effect in terms of
updating their current hardware into new technology. That being said, these business owners
understand the benefit of a convenient, on-site tax system that integrates with their current
transaction hardware to provide financial statements per transaction. Small business owners
relying on out of date hardware lack the systematic process to assess how their finances are being
organized and consolidated throughout the year. Although we are optimistic, we foresee a
potential issue concerning the integration between the SpeedyTax hardware and external credit
card processors that are currently used.
Profitability: In order to determine the profitability of our hardware, we compared
SpeedyTax hardware to Casio Computer Company Ltd and Verifone Systems Inc. Casio and
Verifone produce the most reputable and frequently purchased cash registers and credit card
processing machines. Casio provides consumers with electronic POS cash registers and had
sales of $3.15 billion in the 2013 fiscal year (Business Insight). Verifone, the credit card
authorization device used with most hardware systems, made a net revenue of about $1.7 billion
in the fiscal year of 2013 (Business Insights). In order for SpeedyTax hardware to be successful,
it would have to partner with Casio Computer Company Ltd and Verifone Systems Inc. to
successfully ensure that they capture the market. As a new product, if SpeedyTax hardware were
to partner with these major companies it would immediately be bought out. For these reasons, we
see this this opportunity as a viable than the SpeedyTax software due to the stronghold on the
market and the low frequency of purchase for cash registers and credit card POS systems.

Stage II: Business Case
Product Concepts
New Product Concept: SpeedyTax Software

SpeedyTax, the on-site tax processing software that integrates with all existing POS systems,
calculates sales totals and expenses with each transaction to prepare your taxes for year-end.

New Product Concept: SpeedyTax Hardware
Introducing SpeedyTax: Hardware Solution
The tax systems that are currently available are costly and inconvenient.
SpeedyTax Hardware, the transaction calculation product for filing taxes at point-of-sale, gives
business owners a time efficient method to accurately organize tax-filing information for
submission.
This tax preparation register provides business owners the ability to collect, organize and
effectively prepare taxes without the burden of hiring a tax professional.
SpeedyTax Hardware features an external USB port that updates sales transactions taxes for
100% guaranteed accuracy.
So bring on April 15th, you’ve been prepared all year.

Winning Concept We chose SpeedyTax software as our winning concept because it tested well with our
target market and displayed high feasibility. Our software provides a viable solution to the point
of sale frustrations incurred with the current tax software available. As a group, we show interest
in how to effectively run a company and manage financials.
Product Positioning Statements For small business owners, SpeedyTax is the tax preparation software that organizes
(Target Market) (Brand) (Arena)
taxes per transaction at the point of sale with a fully integrated and easy to use interface.
(Point of Difference) (Competitive Advantage)
Concept Test Results
Using qualitative survey techniques and our fully developed concept for SpeedyTax
software, we reached out to five small businesses in Boulder to receive feedback on our product.
Our test method included providing a printed version of our concept as a visual reference to look
and read over, followed by twelve qualitative questions. Utilizing only qualitative research our
group capitalized on the interaction of small business owners and their valuable feedback. With
the information we received from our test market, we compiled common responses to create a
benchmark evaluation for our product.
Purchase Intent: As previously mentioned, we set a benchmark of initially gaining
0.005% share of the total online tax preparation industry in direct competition with TurboTax,
that currently holds 55.4% share of the market. With this goal, we hope that small businesses
recognize our point of difference and the value that it provides as a cost efficient and time saving
solution. Since we were unable to perform a quantitative survey to determine purchase intent,
we relied on their honest opinion of their intent in investing in our software. Three out of five of
the businesses claimed that they would definitely or probably purchase SpeedyTax software and
the fourth and fifth businesses claimed that they were indifferent. The business that was
indifferent towards SpeedyTax stated that they were comfortable with their current solutions for
tax preparation and did not want to engage in a new solution.

Pricing: Using the Van Westendorp Method we asked our interviewees what they would
expect to pay for our product, what price would be so low that they would question the products
quality, and what price would be so high that they would no longer be willing to pay. On
average, the small business owners reported that they would expect to pay a price of $155.80,
they would question the product’s quality at a price of $111.6, and they would not longer be
willing to purchase the product at a price of $190.
Key Findings: Our interviewees reported that they expected our product to perform at a level
comparable or higher than our competitors. They had high expectations for our product because
of our point of difference provides for the tax preparation and organization process. Our added
features are what we will need emphasize when selling our product to consumers. This is crucial
because our competitors already have well-established brands.
A large majority of the small businesses stated that credit card transactions are far more
frequent than cash transactions. One business claimed credit card and cash transactions were
about equal. This information affirmed that a software solution is more viable than a hardware
solution. A previous concern regarding the manual input of cash transactions was addressed
during the interview and business owners claimed they would most likely input the cash
transactions at the end of the day as opposed to per transaction.
We also asked about how the name “$peedy Tax Software” fit with our product. Most
businesses liked it, however, they offered us constructive criticism stating that the “$” could
potentially diminish the professionalism of our software. We then utilized this feedback to go
forward with our final software name of SpeedyTax.
Summary of Qualitative Test Methods: Our qualitative test method included one-on-one
interviews with business owners to get feedback on the feasibility of our product offer. Our
10
intention was to receive a real reaction for the final product, and one-on-one interviews gave us a
reasonable time frame and cost to achieve this. The reason we did this was to refine and improve
our ideas and select the go-forward attributes of our products. We conducted the interviews with
small business owners running companies of 100 employees or less in the Boulder area. We
introduced them to our product by providing them with images of the concept mockup and a
description of SpeedyTax and its features. We measured their likes, dislikes and suggested
improvements to refine our product.
Benchmark Concept: The competitive benchmark concept that we used to assess SpeedyTax
was TurboTax. TurboTax guarantees a maximum refund, 100% accurate calculations and guides
its customers with exclusive business expert interviews. In assessing TurboTax’s offerings, we
concluded that we must provide all of these features in addition to our per transaction filing point
of difference. Furthermore, we established that our product must be equally or more intuitive
than TurboTax to make sure that customers with little to no previous tax knowledge would
purchase our product over our competitors.
Financials
In order to find our key inputs for the P&L, we used top-down forecasting and found that
the total market for tax preparation services consisted of 35 million users in the U.S. From this
method, we were able to set a goal to capture 0.005% of the market by the end of year one. That
market share would translate into 175,000 units, which we will sell at $169.99 making year one
revenue $29,748,250. The retail margin is the average percentage for the industry, which is 40-
50%. The advertising budget is 8% of sales due to the fact that we are in a competitive industry
and need to highlight our point of difference for consumers.
The product cost estimate is $65.01 with the raw material and manufacturing costs based
on industry averages. We will not be shipping outside the U.S., so we avoid freight and
duty/import tariffs and are not pursuing any kind of patent for SpeedyTax. Our
equipment/machinery costs require a large initial investment making our ROI for year one
9.01%. Although it is negative in the first year, it will become profitable in just over a year.
ROI = (Gross Margin - COI)/(COI)
(2,857,036 - 3,140,000)/(3,140,000) = -9.01% ROI
Payback Analysis
Payback Number of Years = COI/Gross Margin
11
3,140,000/2,857,036 = 1.10 years
12
Stage III: Development
Innovation Type and Strategy
SpeedyTax software is a derivative product; however, it provides more than moderate
innovations. The integrated technology and intuitive interface featured on the software are new
to the world and yet to be seen by any competitors. Therefore, our strategy is a reactive, second
but better, approach. We are concentrating on an existing product and market, however we are
drastically changing the existing standard by providing new innovative product facets. We will
be targeting broader arenas, differentiating our offering and engaging in product development to
grow.
Winning Concept Details The technology implemented by SpeedyTax software is a fully integrated system that
captures every sale and properly organizes the information into an external document. This in
turn prepares business owners for year-end taxes. The software updates itself with each
transaction that is processed and automatically feeds the information to the external document.
This ensures the highest accuracy in bookkeeping and financial organization.
In terms of design, our product will feature very basic and aesthetically appealing
graphics, formatting and labeling. This will allow customers to easily follow the financials being
recorded and have a full understanding of their daily transactions. A potential design issue is
confusion regarding formatting if the software is processing a high number of transactions in a
short period of time. To prevent this, we will have our engineers managing and updating all
software frequently to reduce any chance of malfunction.
SpeedyTax will not pursue intellectual property. Our software is a derivative product in a
reactive market. With these conditions, there is little protection for innovation. Although we are
not attempting any legal protection, our software is distinctive and we intend to capitalize on first
mover advantage.
We will be insourcing the coding and writing of the SpeedyTax software using internal
engineers and computer programmers. Our computer programs will not only code the software
but they will also constantly update and maintain the software. In terms of our physical product
offering to be sold in stores, we will be outsourcing the manufacturing of our packaging and disc
production.
13
Stage IV: Testing and Validation
Pre-Launch Testing Plan Initially, we will perform alpha tests internally with our engineers and internal consumers
to ensure quality control. With our alpha testing, we intend to work out any “bugs” the product
might have before rolling it out to consumer testing. Because taxes are such a crucial aspect of
running a business, it is critical that our system is not susceptible to any glitches when we release
it.
Prior to a full-scale launch, we want to position our product in simulated test markets
through beta testing. We want to give business owners the opportunity to use our software
system before purchase. This not only gives the consumer time to understand how SpeedyTax
works, but it provides us with information on possible system malfunctions and performance. It
is imperative that we have a trial period for our fully integrated system prior to launch. We need
to ensure our customers that their taxes are being handled with the highest caliber of accuracy,
14
and by allowing them to use the product before purchase, we can build that trusting
relationship.
Stage V: Launch
Product Name
For our product, we decided on the name SpeedyTax. It is not only easy to remember, but
a great representation of our point of difference. Offering tax preparation software in a “speedy”
manner, per transaction at the point of sale, is what differentiates our product from all other
competitors. It signifies our true value to consumers. Originally we wanted to spell the word
“speedy” with a dollar sign, but based on our concept test results, the “$” was unprofessional and
not dot com-able. Factoring in our test results and following the naming best practices led us to
“SpeedyTax.” This name is easy to say, short, memorable, and has positive associations with the
consumer.
Pricing Approach Looking at a range of price points, TurboTax Business CD/Download, for small business
owners or sole proprietors is priced at $149.99 (TurboTax). Microsoft Office Home and Business
2013 is priced at $219.99 as a one-time purchase (Microsoft). We would like to price our
product competitively with these two price points based on the value our product provides to its
users. Furthermore, we took our concept test result into account when finalizing our product’s
price. Although small business owners reported they would not purchase SpeedyTax at $190, we
found using the odd pricing technique made potential buyers feel that they were receiving a price
close to what they would expect. With this, we have priced SpeedyTax software at $169.99.
Distribution Approach
We will be distributing our product through three different forums. Our first distribution
channel will be the App Store. This allows for streamlined downloading onto all smartphones,
tablets, and laptops. Not only will this provide for easy integration among devices but it will also
cater to our market utilizing tablets to complete their business transactions. Our second form of
distribution is purchasing and downloading directly from the SpeedyTax website, which allows
for full obtainability between both Macintosh and PC systems. Finally, our last channel of
distribution is through physical purchase at technology retailers such as Best Buy and Apple.
15
With this channel, we will have knowledgeable sales people to provide consumers with answers
to any questions and information regarding functionality.
Promotional Launch Plan
Theme: Small business owners do not have the time to collect and organize their transactions
in an efficient manner. Tax preparation and filing is a costly service for small businesses that do
not have the flexibility to hire such expensive tax professionals.
Tagline: SpeedyTax - Bring on April 15th, you’ve been prepared all year.
Creative Executions: SpeedyTax will send sales representatives to Best Buy and Apple retail
locations. These sales representatives will be responsible for explaining our software and how
small business owners can benefit from our innovative technology. Each representative will set
up a mock transaction and allow potential consumers to test out our software and become
familiar with the interface.
Timing: Within the first six months of launch, SpeedyTax will aggressively train and send
out sales representatives to fully educate the market. It is imperative that retail employees fully
understand our software and its point of difference in order to communicate it to the highest
degree. Marketing will have to remain dominant throughout the first few years in order for our
product to grow and maintain a stable market share.
Budget: We plan to allocate $120,000 to search engine optimization, $150,000 to creating a
website, $15,000 to providing an app and $240,000 to distribute ads in Time and Forbes
magazine. This leaves us with around $615,000 to allocate wherever necessary during our
launch.
Specifics About Ad Placement: Our ads will be distributed in Time and Forbes magazines as
their entrepreneurial readers perfectly our desired target market.
