IMPORTANT SCHOOL

DATES

Literacy and Numeracy

At Mount Waverley Primary School teachers work collaboratively in teams to produce outstanding planning documents for literacy and numeracy activities which are shared with staff across the whole school.

I have been most impressed with the quality of these documents and the outstanding teaching which accompanies them. The students at Mount Waverley Primary School work assiduously to achieve their personal learning goals in both literacy and numeracy. Many students at our school achieve well above the expected level and perform exceptionally well in competitions such as ICAS. One of our students, Sonal M from 5B, recently achieved the medal for the top performance in the state in the ICAS Computer competition and I congratulate her on that achievement.

In addition to specific literacy and numeracy lessons, many rich literacy and numeracy learning tasks are completed through each year level’s units of work. These learning tasks can provide real life meaning and deep learning experiences. Our units of work for term 3 are:

Prep Family History and Celebrations

Years 1and 2 Habitats

Years 3 and 4 Commonwealth Games and National Parks

Years 5 and 6 Our Planet, Our Future

The four key areas that make a difference to student achievement are:

Teacher quality Principal autonomy Parental engagement Strengthening the curriculum I look forward to working with teachers to ensure that we continue to build upon our existing programs, ensure our curriculum is consistent between classrooms and that the delivery of lessons is engaging and motivating.

The quality of work being displayed in classrooms is exceptional and I congratulate our students on, not only their hard work, but also their high level of creativity.

ROAD SAFETY A reminder to all families about the importance of Road Safety when dropping students off in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon. It is essential that all students use the school crossings to cross Park Lane and Toirram Road. Students should also exit and enter cars from the footpath side to avoid accidents and injuries, as these streets are extremely busy in the morning and afternoon. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE SCHOOL CAR PARKS

ARE NOT DROP OFF OR WALK THROUGH ZONES.

MWPS 3rd ANNUAL GREEN DAY: IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN!

On Friday 22 August, MWPS will celebrate its third annual Green Day. This is a day for

celebrating all of our “green” achievements; recycling programs, gardening programs,

animal adoptions and our 5 Star Resource Smart Sustainable School status. Students are

asked to dress in green, as their favourite animal or as something else inspired by nature

(a tree or the earth perhaps).

We will be visited by Leigh’s Reptile Show and will have a whole school Green Nude Food

Picnic, so please don’t send any rubbish to school. Students will also participate in green themed activities

within their classrooms. Each child will receive a special GREEN DAY SHOWBAG!!! There will also be a whole

school BOOK SWAP held throughout the day. This day will start off the next week’s EnviroWeek theme. The

Senior Enviro Team will be holding a stall selling merchandise from various animal charities in order to raise

funds for our various adopted animals and green projects around the school. Prices will start from 20c.

Hi, I’m Earnest and I care about the environment.

STUDENT WELFARE Mornings are often chaotic, particularly in households where both parents work or in the homes of sole parents. Both parents and children generally have a great deal to do to prepare for the day. It is also important that children get to school on time so they can make the most of their learning experiences. Attention-seekers and dawdlers often find mornings are ideal times to keep their parents busy . Many morning difficulties arise due to a lack of understanding of the roles to be performed. Most children, even young ones, are capable of doing their morning tasks without parental interference, yet we so often take those responsibilities away from them. SOME IDEAS TO GET THE MORNING WORKING FOR YOU Establish a clear routine. With your children’s help – work out an order of activities that everyone understands. Place the morning activities on a chart or even a photo chart. Charts help younger children and boys who are

‘organisationally challenged’ to go through their routine activities. Identify jobs you and your children need do. Children should be able to do routine tasks that directly involve

them, such as preparing their cereal, clearing dishes away, dressing, washing themselves and preparing school bags.

Slow starters can prepare the night before. They can lay their clothes out or just make sure their bag is packed. Be aware of possible distractions and get rid of them. Some children become absorbed in television; some spend

an eternity choosing their clothes, others dawdle over just finding something clean to wear. Television, if it’s to be watched, can be turned on when children are ready for the day. Clothes can be chosen and laid out the night before.

Model a good routine. Set a good example by being organised and avoid sleeping in yourself.
