Welcome to the first

SPELD SA e-newsletter

The aim of this publication is to keep our

members up-to-date with what is happening at

SPELD SA. It includes a mix of information,

commentary and publicity for our three member

groups: parents, schools and tutors.

Thank you to all who have been saving their

bottle caps for us. The response has been great

and we would particularly like to thank Aaron

Brice and the company Bickfords who contributed

over 1000 new bottle tops. Keep them coming in

and we will keep distributing them.

How can you tell whether a particular

program will improve a person’s

literacy skills?

MUSEC Briefings

Academics at Macquarie University have

investigated the research available on a number

of programs and provide an objective response in

the MUSEC Briefings (link). The latest program to

be added was “Cellfield”.

SPELD SA e-newsletter 1st Edition June 2011

You can find the MUSEC Briefings at

SPELD SA Free Phonic Books

These books were created for parents and

teachers looking for short texts to support the

teaching of phonics. The texts include the most

common spelling of the 42 main sounds of the

English language and follow the order of letter-

sound presentation in the Jolly Phonics Program:

s, a, t, i, p, n

c, k, ck, e, h, r, m, d

g, o, u, l, f, b

ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or

z, w, ng, v, oo (eg food), oo (eg, book)

y, x, ch, sh, th (eg thing), th (eg, this)

qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar

While the core texts may be appropriate in

content for people of any age who are beginning

readers, we have recently included some longer

texts at each level with more advanced

vocabulary.

There are now 68 texts on the site, the most

recent additions being ‘A Comic Act’ (Set 4) and

‘Lots of Hits’ (Set 7). We would love to receive

feedback from our readers to guide us in the

future - email [email protected].

Thank you SPELD SA would like to thank all contributors to

the SPELD SA Phonic Books especially,

Angela Weeks

who writes most of the text.

Dick Weigall

without whom, there would be no

pictures! Dick (who you can see at

work at http://www.speld-

sa.org.au/index.php?option=com_

content&task=view&id=117&Itemi

d=199), has illustrated most of the books and has

brilliantly brought these simple texts to life

through his illustrations.

Sandy Russo

without whom, the texts would remain a word

document and the illustrations, drawings on

paper! Thanks to Sandy’s technological and

graphic skills, you can access

these texts online as flipping

pages or printable PDFs.

and the

Thyne Reid Foundation

which has very generously provided the funding

Does SPELD SA support Levelled Readers?

Watch out for the SPELD SA Spring newsletter for the article “Developing a child’s reading doesn't start with books, it progresses to books.”

Those of you who have received Jolly Phonics

training will know that Sue Lloyd, the author of

Jolly Phonics, recommends that students are not

given readers until they know the 42 basic letter-

sounds of English. At SPELD SA, we fully support

this position. Students need to create connections

in the left hemisphere of the brain, by learning

letter-sounds and how to blend them to make

words, to become fluent readers. Emphasis on

learning words by sight or through context or

guesswork, before a student can decode words

independently using letter-sounds, can negatively

affect the development of their reading skills.

Early levelled readers need to be based on phonic

skills not other criteria.

Regional Training in Jolly Phonics

Jan and Frances, SPELD SA’s Jolly Phonics trainers,

will be presenting workshops at the following

areas; the Mid North, Mt Gambier, the Eastern

Fleurieu, Whyalla and Melbourne in terms 2

and 3.

Why not organise a workshop in your region and

invite people from neighbouring schools and

towns.

The SPELD SA Jolly Phonics Trainers can be

contacted at [email protected]

SPELD SA also provides Regional Training in

dyslexia related topics with Sandy Russo or

Angela Weeks. For available talks visit the SPELD

SA website Workshops/Offsite Presentations.
