‘Understanding Wellbeing in Changing Times: The Role of SPHE’

CALL FOR PAPERS, POSTERS AND WORKSHOPS We are pleased to invite you to participate in this second SPHE Network Conference. The conference aims to bring together academics, teachers, student teachers, postgraduate students, health professionals, policy-makers, NGOs and the wider education community, to engage in dialogue about social, personal and health education in Irish primary and post-primary schools. Our approach emphasises participation and the sharing of ideas and experience. The conference will include keynote and paper presentations, workshops and poster displays. These will address all strands of the SPHE Curriculum, including Myself, Myself and Others, and Myself and the Wider World (primary), and modules in the SPHE Curriculum (post-primary). We particularly welcome current research, and/or examples of innovative pedagogies, materials and practices. The SPHE Conference focuses on the theme, ‘Understanding Wellbeing in Changing Times: The Role of SPHE’. In the context of our changing economic, cultural, political and social environment, the conference aims to explore and engage with current policy and practice relating to SPHE, and to map a way forward to maximise its potential. Our keynote speaker is Prof. Mark Morgan, Cregan Professor of Education and Psychology at St. Patrick's College, and Acting Co-Director of Growing Up in Ireland. A second keynote speaker is to be confirmed. This call for papers, posters and workshop proposals is open to all academics, teachers, student teachers, postgraduate students, health professionals, policy-makers, NGOs, and the wider education community. Papers reflecting the latest research and practice in SPHE-related matters at all levels are welcome as are papers based on personal reflection/experience. Applicants may be interested in providing a workshop session rather than an academic paper and are encouraged to consider interactive and reflective forms of presentation, where their material lends itself to these approaches. Posters will also be welcome for display, particularly from student teachers. All proposals will be blind reviewed by a committee selected by the SPHE Network.

2. Submission

The entire submission should be no more than two pages, a cover page with information about the applicant(s) as outlined below and a second page containing the abstract. Please provide the following information: i. Author or Presenter Information One person must be designated as the Applicant/Key presenter. Please provide the following information: Title: Name: Telephone number: E-mail Address: Affiliation: (college, organisation, etc. where relevant) To facilitate a blind review process, please provide this information on a cover page which is separate from the actual abstract itself. This page will be removed before the Sub-Committee reading the abstract makes a decision on whether or not to accept the submission. However, the entire paper (title page and abstract) must be in ONE document created in Word format.

ii. Preferred presentation Please specify whether you wish to present a paper (20 mins), poster or workshop (90 mins). iii. Title

Please state the title of the presentation iv. Abstract

An abstract should be sent for all proposed presentations

It should be on Times New Roman 12 font, single spaced

Do not include within the abstract field the title, any author name or author affiliations

The abstract should be 300 words only with word count typed at bottom

Note that we will accept both academic and non-academic papers v. Criteria for Acceptance of Proposed Presentations In assessing applications the proposal committee will consider the following criteria:

Relevance: Note that the theme of the conference is ‘‘Understanding Wellbeing in Changing Times”, therefore proposals should deal with this theme in relation to curriculum/course provision at either primary, post-primary or third level.

Innovation and originality: Are any new strategies and/or approaches described? Is new research presented? Are ideas of interest to practitioners at the various levels?

Quality: Is the proposed paper or poster presentation of a high standard? This may be illustrated by evidence of depth of research or evidence of impact of work.

Impact: Can you illustrate how your proposal, work or discussion has made an impact or could make an impact on SPHE curriculum/course provision at any level?

Applicability: Is the approach, idea or work applicable to others? Can knowledge be transferred to others through your presentation?

Appeal and Readability: Is the proposed paper or poster presentation clear, and to the point? Is the abstract written with empathy for the reader? Does it acknowledge the diversity of the target audience, which may include academics, teachers, students, policy makers, NGO representatives and education practitioners?

3. Notification of Acceptance

You will be notified if your abstract is accepted or not by e-mail on Friday, 25th April 2014. Acceptance of the invitation to present must be confirmed by Friday, 9th May 2014.
