Le projet Sphères réunit à nouveau plusieurs galeries d’art contemporain à dimension internationale, gui-dées par une seule volonté : unir leurs diverses énergies autour d’une nouvelle expérience commune d’exposi-tion, sans soumission à un thème contraignant. Les galeries présentent chacune des artistes issus des cinq continents, dont les oeuvres investissent les divers es-paces du Moulin, lieu hors normes et chargé d’histoire.

Démontrant qu’il est possible de s’affranchir des pré-supposés sur une soi-disant concurrence entre les galeries d’art contemporain, ce projet est le manifeste d’une prise de position dynamique au sein du domai-ne professionnel de l’art et de son marché : une ini-tiative de faire de la corrélation non plus un barrage, mais bien un atout exceptionnel pour ouvrir la voie à des projets inédits et ambitieux, mettant à profit la di-versité des opinions et la richesse des subjectivités.

Les œuvres réunies au Moulin sont autant d’échos singuliers au travail de soutien et de développement mené par les galeries, démontrant ici leur force de proposition, d’investissement et leur accompagne-ment toujours renouvelé auprès des artistes, pour faire émerger de nouveaux modèles de réflexion et de nouveaux challenges. Sphères est ainsi à l’image de cette force d’agir de concert pour créer un confluent d’énergies et ainsi multiplier les perspectives critiques.

Once again the Sphères project reunites several contemporary art galleries with an international di-mension, driven by one desire: to unite their diverse energies around a new, common exhibition experence, without being tied to a restrictive theme. The galleries each present artists from the five continents, whose works of art take over the diverse exhibition space at Le Moulin, an unusual setting with an interesting history.

Showing that it is possible to free oneself from presuppositions regarding the so-called competition between contemporary art galleries, the project is the manifesto of a dynamic stance within the professional domain of art and its market. The nitiative seeks to demonstrate that the fact that galleries operate in the same sphere should no longer be regarded as an obstacle to working together. Instead, it offers exciting potential to collaborate on ambitious and previously unattempted projects, making the most of the diversity of opinions and the wealth of subjectivities.

The works on show at Le Moulin will echo and offer concrete proof that it is possible for galleries to support each other and to work together in developing shared projects, encouraging and facilitating artists to open up new domains for reflection in contemporary art. Spheres is confluence of energies, acting as a force for creating multiple critical perspectives..

En octobre 2007, Galleria Continua a inauguré ce site singulier pour la création contemporaine en région parisienne.

Cet ancien ensemble de bâtiments industriels de plus de 10 000 m2 repose sur des fondations datant du 13ème siècle. A partir de 1833, Le Moulin devient une papeterie. Galleria Continua a choisi d’investir en France ce lieu de caractère et de conserver le nom habituellement usité pour qualifier « Le Moulin de Boissy ». Le lieu était à l’abandon depuis de nombreuses années.

Aujourd’hui réhabilité, le site est prêt à embrasser sa nouvelle vie artistique. Le Moulin accueille plusieurs fois par an, au rythme des saisons, les projets et l’exposi-tion d’oeuvres grands formats d’artistes des cinq conti-nents. Sous le signe de la libre circulation des artistes, des oeuvres d’art, des acteurs de l’art contemporain, des idées et des échanges féconds entre différentes cultu-res, le projet du Moulin est à vocation philanthropique.

Galleria Continua unveiled this unusual site for contemporary creation in the Paris region in October 2007.

This former industrial area of more than 10 000 m2 relies on foundations from the 13th century. In 1833, Le Moulin became a paper factory. Galleria Continua chose to operate this specific site and keep the origi-nal name of « Le Moulin de Boissy ». The space was abandonned since a few years.

The site, now renovated, is ready to embrace its new artistic life. Le Moulin hosts occasionaly during the year, following the seasons, projects and exhibitions of monumental works by artists from the five conti-nents. Under the sign of free circulation of artists, art works, contemporary art’s actors, ideas, and fertil exchanges between differents cultures, Le Moulin project has a philanthropic vocation

Galleria Continua est née à l’initiative de trois amis : Mario Cristiani, Lorenzo Fiaschi et Maurizio Rigillo, en 1990 à San Gimignano, en Italie.

Installée dans une ancienne salle de théâtre et de cinéma, Galleria Continua est implantée là où personne ne l’attendait, dans un lieu, San Gimignano, chargé d’histoire et intemporellement magnifique.

De nouvelles possibilités de dialogues et de croisements peuvent ainsi naître entre des géographies inattendues, rurales, industrielles, locales et globales, art d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, artistesde renom et émergents. Galleria Continua estce désir de continuité entre les époques, ce voeu d’écrire une histoire présente sensible de la création actuelle qui nourrisse le lien entre hier et demain, les individus et les géographies diverses et inaccoutumées.

Ainsi, depuis près de vingt ans, Galleria Continua s’est forgée, au fil de rencontres et d’expériences, une identité forte autour de valeurs généreuses et altruistes qui ont servi de base à ses collaborations artistiques, à son rapport au public et à son développement.

Galleria Continua opened in San Gimignano (Italy)in 1990, the result of the initiative of three friends:Mario Cristiani, Lorenzo Fiaschi and Maurizio Rigillo.

Occupying a former theatre and cinema, GalleriaContinua established itself and thrived in an entirelyunexpected location, in a town (San Gimigna-no) steeped in history, timeless, magnificent.

This choice of location provided scope for the de-velopment of new forms of dialogue and symbiosis between unexpected geographies: rural and industrial, local and global, art from the past and the art of to-day, famous artists and emerging ones. Galleria Conti-nua is all about a desire for continuity between ages.Remaining faithful to a spirit of perpetual evolution and committed to interesting as broad a public as possible in contemporary art, in the course of over twenty years, Galleria Continua has created a strong identity for itself through its ties and experiences.

The aspiration to having a part in writing the history of the present, a history that is sensitive to contem-porary creative practices and which cherishes the link between past and future, and between dif-ferent and unusual individuals and geographies.

Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg / Cape TownLa Goodman Gallery se situe à l’avant scène de l’art contemporain en Afrique du Sud. Elle se concentre sur des artistes d’Afrique du Sud, du continent, ou d’autres pays qui engagent un dialogue avec le contexte et les problématiques liées à l’Afrique du Sud.

La galerie entretient une longue histoire avec l’art africain. Elle a été fondée par Linda Goodman (à présent Givon) en 1966 et a fait émerger de jeunes artistes noirs inconnus qui n’avaient pas accès aux galeries et musées d’Afrique du Sud. Une question abordée lors du séminaire « L’art contre l’Apartheid » en 1985, puis monté en un spectacle qui dénonçait le régime répressif de l’Apartheid. En 2008, Givon a vendu la galerie à Liza Essers qui a apporté beaucoup de nouveaux artistes dans le catalogue de Goodman mais aussi maintenu de fortes connections internationales pour la galerie.

La Goodman Gallery a évolué dans son ambition de devenir un leader des institutions d’art contemporain en Afrique et était la seule galerie du continent à figurer à Art Basel en Suisse en 2010. La galerie est le foyer d’une quarantaine d’artistes incluant des artistes comme William Kentridge dernièrement exposé au Jeu de Paume à Paris et au Louvre, David Goldblatt, dernièrement exposé au Musée d’Art Moderne de New York et Moshekwa Langa, récemment exposé à la 29ème Biennale de Sao Paulo.

Non contente de lancer des artistes Sud Africains sur la scène internationale lors d’événements aussi connus et importants que Art Basel, Art Basel Miami et l’Armory Show à New York, la Goodman Gallery a attiré en Afrique du Sud des artistes internationaux tels que Kara Walker, Hank Willis Thomas, Jenny Holzer et Ghada Amer. Tous ces artistes ont participé à l’initiative collaborative de la galerie en 2010 intitulée « In Context ». Ce type de biennale brasse et mélange des artistes aux cultures différentes qui viennent ici les confronter au contexte africain.

La Goodman Gallery possède est basée à Johannesbourg et Cape Town. Elle possède aussi un espace à Arts on Main dans le centre ville Johannesbourg et une salle d’exposittion au One & Only Hotel sur le Cape Town Waterfront.

The Goodman Gallery is at the forefront of contempo-rary art in South Africa. Its focus is on artists from South Africa, the greater African Continent, and other coun-tries that engage in a dialogue with the African context.

The gallery has a long history in South African art. It was established by Linda Goodman (now Givon) in 1966 and, from the outset, championed the work of young black artists who had little access to galle-ries and museums in South Africa. It was involved in the seminal Art Against Apartheid exhibition in 1985 and held shows that spoke out against the re-pressive apartheid regime. In 2008, Givon sold the gallery to Liza Essers who has brought several new artists into the Goodman fold and has maintained a strong international connection for the gallery.

The Goodman Gallery has evolved into the leading contemporary art institution in Africa and was the only gallery on the continent to feature at Art Basel in Swit-zerland in 2010. The Gallery is home to forty artists in-cluding visual art luminaries such as William Kentridge, (currently exhibiting at Jeu de Paume in Paris and the Louvre), David Goldblatt (currently exhibiting the Mu-seum of Modern Art in New York) and Moshekwa Lan-ga (currently exhibiting at the 29th São Paulo Biennial).

As well as taking South African artists to major inter-national events and fairs such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami and the Armory Show In New York, the Good-man Gallery has brought various international artists to South Africa including Kara Walker, Hank Willis Tho-mas, Jenny Holzer and Ghada Amer. All of these artists, as well as a range of artists from the African continent, featured on the Gallery’s 2010 collaborative initiative titled In Context. This biennale type event powerfully brought together artists from diverse backgrounds who all confront conditions pertinent the African context.

Goodman Gallery has major spaces in Johannes-burg and Cape Town, a project space at Arts on Main in downtown Johannesburg, and a viewing room at the One&Only Hotel on the Cape Town Waterfront.

La galerie Johann König à Berlin a ouvert en mai 2002 sur la Rosa Luxemburg Platz et a déménagé dans ses nouveaux locaux post industriels de 2000 m2 près de la Potsdamer Platz, au centre de Berlin, en avril 2006. Johann König / Berlin

Johann König, Berlin opened in May 2002 at Rosa Luxemburg Platz in Berlin and moved to its new lo-cation, a 5.800 sq ft. post industrial hall close to Pots-damer Platz, right in the middle of Berlin, in April 2006. The gallery is managed by Kirsa Geiser and Jo-hann König. They have formed a unique program of emerging and mid-career artists. The gallery is not media specific and has exhibited audio works, vi-deo, painting, works on paper, photography, perfor-mance, installation and sculpture since its opening.

The following artists are represented by Johann König: Micol Assaël, Henning Bohl, Manuel Graf, Tue Green-fort, Jeppe Hein, Nathan Hylden, Annette Kelm, Man-fred Kuttner, Alicja Kwade, Lisa Lapinski, Kris Martin, Michaela Meise, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Michael Sailstorfer, Tatiana Trouvé, Johannes Wohnseifer, Jordan Wolfson, David Zink Yi and Andreas Zybach.

Yvon Lambert ouvre sa première galerie parisien-ne rue de L’Échaudé en 1966. Il y expose un certain nombre d’artistes américains reconnus tels que Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, Tony Smith, Richart Tuttle, Cy Twombly, Lawrence Weiner, les pionniers de l’art minimal, de l’art conceptuel et du Land Art, ainsi que les artistes Daniel Buren, Gordon Matta-Clark, Dennis Oppenheim, Giulio Paolini, Niele Toroni (…). En 1977 il quitte le 6ème arrondissement pour le Marais, rue du Grenier Saint Lazare, et présente le travail de Mi-quel Barceló, Joseph Beuys, Jean-Charles Blais, Louise Lawler, Allan McColllum, (…) En 1986 il déménage à nouveau pour s’installer sous la magnifique verrière du 108 rue Vieille du Temple, où il développe des rela-tions professionnelles et personnelles fortes avec des artistes tels que Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Jenny Holzer, Joan Jonas, Anselm Kiefer, Bertrand Lavier, Claude Lévêque, (…) En 2003 Yvon Lambert renforce sa position internationale en ouvrant une seconde galerie à New York dans le quartier de Chelsea, après avoir trouvé une résidence pour la Collection Lam-bert en Avignon à Hôtel de Caumont où il rassemble plus de 500 œuvres d’artistes contemporains de sa collection. Eminent galeriste et collectionneur, Yvon Lambert entretient également une passion pour les livres. Il publie depuis 1992 une collection de livres de bibliophilie à tirage limité. Cette collection compte aujourd’hui une quinzaine de titres, réalisés spécia-lement par Louise Bourgeois, Jenny Holzer, Richard Tuttle, Giulio Paolini, Anselm Kiefer, On Kawara (…)

In 1966 Yvon Lambert opened his first Parisian gallery on the rue de L’Échaudé where he exhibited a great many american artists, Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Brice Marden, Ro-bert Ryman, Tony Smith, Richart Tuttle, Cy Twombly, Lawrence Weiner, (…), the tenants of Conceptual, Mi-nimalist and land art, as well as Daniel Buren, Gordon Matta-Clark, Dennis Oppenheim, Giulio Paolini, Niele Toroni, (…) In 1977 he left the 6th arrondissement for the Marais, rue du Grenier St Lazare, where he exhibited Miquel Barceló, Joseph Beuys, Jean-Charles Blais, Louise Lawler, Allan McColllum, (…) In 1986 he moved again to the magnificent glass-roofed space on rue Vieille du Temple where he affirmed strong relationships with artists including Nan Goldin, Jenny Holzer, Joan Jonas, Anselm Kiefer, Thierry Kuntzel, Matthieu Laurette, Claude Lévêque, Glenn Ligon, (…) In 2003 Yvon Lambert consolidated his internatio-nal position with the opening of a second gallery in Chelsea, New York, after having set up in the Hôtel de Caumont, Avignon in 2000 the Collection Lambert en Avignon, which stands today as an assembly of more than 500 art works by contemporary artists. Eminent gallerist, avid collector, Yvon Lambert also nourishes his passion for books. Since 1992 he has been editing special limited edition books. Today this collection amounts to about fifteen books, each one made by a different artist. Magazzino, Rome

Depuis 1997 Magazzino, Rome a supporté et encouragé la recherche dans le domaine de l’art contemporain, en travaillant directement avec les artistes, critiques et commissaires d’expositions. La fierté de la galerie est celle de présenter de jeunes artistes émergents tels que que Domenico Mangano, Alessandro Piangiamore, Mircea Cantor et mais aussi des artistes qui exposent pour la première fois à Rome tels que Atelier Van Lieshout, Jonas Dahlberg, Armin Linke et Pedro Cabrita Reis.

Le principe de la galerie consiste en l’organisation d’expositions conçues tout spécialement pour Maga-zzino. Débutant en 2002, la commissaire d’exposition Cloe Piccoli a organisé une série d’expositions intitulée «Other Voices, Other Rooms – Artists’ Environments» («D’autre voix, d’autres pièces – L’environnement des artistes») qui interroge les méthodes et pratiques de nombre d’artistes contemporains en interaction avec des environnements architecturaux différents et variés.

La galerie fournit aussi un soutien économique aux artistes qu’elle représente pour la production de travaux et de publications à l’occasion d’expositions nationales ou internationales comme par exemple le travail de Daniele Puppi «Fatica #16» au Hangar Bicocca, ou celui de Sislej Xhafa «Cerimonial Crying System» pour la 51ème Biennale de Venise, ou encore «Molecular Istanbul» de Serge Spitzer présenté pour la première fois à la Mayor Synagogue à l’occasion de la 11ème Biennale d’Istamboul.

Since 1997 Magazzino, Rome has supported and promoted research within the field of contemporary art, working directly with artists, critics and curators. An emphasis of the gallery is the representation of such young, emerging artists as Domenico Mangano, Alessandro Piangiamore, Mircea Cantor and artists exhibiting in Rome for the first time, such as Atelier Van Lieshout, Jonas Dahlberg and Armin Linke and Pedro Cabrita Reis.

A principle activity of the gallery is the organization of exhibitions conceived and curated specifically for the Magazzino. Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris, Salzbourg

Depuis son ouverture à Salzbourg en 1983, la galerie Thaddaeus Ropac s’est spécialisée dans l’art contem-porain européen et d’Amérique du Nord. Aujourd’hui, la maison mère de la galerie est située au coeur de la ma-gnifique Villa Kasat sur la Mirabellplatz de Salzbourg. En 1990, elle a ouvert un espace d’exposition de 600 m2 à Paris. En Avril 2007, une annexe de 200 m2 a été inaugurée. La galerie de Paris, située à côté du musée Picasso dans le quartier du Marais, occupe trois étages.

La galerie représente une constellation d’artistes établis, internationalement renommés aussi bien que des artistes plus jeunes et émergents.

Elle organise de grandes expositions collectives comme individuelles, souvent accompagnées de publications, qu’elles lui soient propres ou qu’elles se fassent en collaboration avec de grands musées internationaux ou d’autres institutions artistiques non commerciales.

La galerie Thaddaeus Ropac est présente dans toutes les grandes foires internationales telles que le Armory Show à New York, la foire Art Basel de Miami, la Frieze de Londres ou encore la FIAC à Paris.

Thaddaeus Ropac est aussi solicitée comme consultante par des musées et centres d’art et comme conseillère pour ce qui concerne les collections privées.

Toutes les galeries sont devenues d’importants centre d’attractions pour les visiteurs dans leurs villes respectives, avec leurs rythmes et identités propres.

L’objectif principal de la galerie est autant de soutenir ses artistes que d’encourager le public à venir découvrir la beauté de l’art contemporain.

Since its foundation in Salzburg in 1983, the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac has specialized in European and North American contemporary art. Today the galle-ry’s headquarters are housed in the magnificient Villa Kast on Salzburg’s Mirabellplatz. In 1990, a gallery fea-turing over 600 m2 of exhibition space, was opened in Paris. In April 2007, a new 200 m2 drawing space was inaugurated above the existing gallery. The Pa-ris gallery, located next to the Picasso Museum in the Marais district, now stretches over three floors.

The gallery represents a constellation of esta-blished, internationally renowned artists and es-tates, as well as continuing to dedicate itself to supporting a selection of young, emerging artists.

The gallery organizes extensive solo and group ex-hibitions, often accompanied by comprehensi-ve publications, not only in its own premises, but also in collaboration with major international mu-seums and other non-commercial art institutions.

The Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is present at all ma-jor contemporary art fairs including, the Armory Show in New York, the Art Basel fairs in both Basel and Miami, Frieze in London and the FIAC in Paris.

The gallery also acts as a consultant to ma-jor museums and public institutions and as ad-visor for private and corporate collections.

Both galleries have become important visitor landmarks in each of their respective cities, re-flecting the rhythm and fabric of each area.

Esther Schipper, Berlin

Esther Schipper ouvre sa première galerie à Cologne en 1989. Ce qui débuta comme un lieu dédié aux projets d’édition de multiples et d’ écrits, se tourna progressivement vers une galerie plus commerciale. Elle fut parmis les toutes premières à présenter des artistes comme Angela Bulloch, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Carsten Höller et Philippe Parreno. Tous sont représentés par Esther Schipper depuis le début de leur carrière.

En 1995, la galerie ouvre un second espace à Berlin avant qu’il ne soit entièrement déplacé deux ans plus tard. Depuis lors, la programmation a été élargie et inclue des artistes comme Thomas Demand, Ceal Floyer and Gabriel Kuri. Depuis 2005, la galerie représente la succession de General Idea. L’origine de leur relation remonte aux tous débuts de la galerie Esther Schipper, lorsque celle-ci ouvre à Cologne avec le collectif canadien. Au fil des ans la galerie a constitué une somme d’archives des plus complètes.

En janvier 2011, après quinze années passées à Berlin Mitte, la galerie déménage à Schöneberger Ufer 65, un quartier voisin de l’historique Neue Na-tionalgalerie qui fut le premier centre des galeries à Berlin, il y a cent ans. Le nouvel espace d’exposition est installé dans une résidence classique des an-nées 1890 qui fut réhabilité par l’architecte berlinois Arno Brandlhuber, et dont les bureaux ont été des-sinés par l’architecte berlinoise Christiane Schmitz.

Esther Schipper opened her first gallery in Cologne in 1989. What started as a project space for publishing multiples and writing, gradually turned into a com-mercial gallery. She was among the first to show artists like Angela Bulloch, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Carsten Höller and Philippe Par-reno. All of them have been represented by Esther Schipper since the beginning of their artistic career.

In 1995 the gallery opened a second space in Berlin before it has been relocated completely two years later. Since then the program has been expanded to include artists such as Thomas Demand, Ceal Floyer, and Gabriel Kuri. Since 2005 the gallery represents the estate of General Idea. The origin of this rela-tionship goes back to the beginnings when Esther Schipper initially opened her gallery in Cologne with the Canadian collective. Over the years the gallery has built up a most comprehensive artist archive.

In January 2011, after 15 years in Berlin Mitte, the gallery moved to Schöneberger Ufer 65 – an area in the direct neighbourhood of the historic Neue Natio-nalgalerie, which was the first centre of commercial art galleries in Berlin a hundred years ago. The new exhibition spaces are located in a classical residence from the 1890s, which has been redesigned by the Berlin based architect Arno Brandlhuber, while the interior design of the new offices has been reali-zed by the Berlin based architect Christiane Schmitz.

Galleria Continua aime maintenir une continuité physique et visuelle entre ses expositions passées, présen-tes et futures. Par exemple, les long-term projects de Daniel Buren, Chen Zhen, Leandro Erlich, Yona Friedman, Kendell Geers, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Shen Yuan et PascaleMarthine Tayou font écho aux expositions passées. De même, certaines piè-ces ne font pas parties des expositions thémati-ques ou monographiques et sont montrées com-me « special view ». Il s’agit d’oeuvres peu vues en transit, prêt ou dépôt exceptionnel au Moulin.

Certain pieces were created and producedespecially for Le Moulin and are at times exhibi-ted semi-permanently. Galleria Continua likes to maintain physical and visual continuity between its past, present and future exhibitions. For exam-ple, longterm projects by Daniel Buren, Chen Zhen, Leandro Erlich, Yona Friedman, Kendell Geers, Mi-chelangelo Pistoletto, Shen Yuan and Pascale Mar-thine Tayou reflect previous exhibitions. Likewise, certain pieces are not part of thematic or mono-graphic exhibitions and are exhibited as a ‘special viewing’. These are artworks are normally in tran-sit, on loan or exceptionally in storage at Le Moulin.
