    time stretCh & Varispeed

Spider Jam eatures two dierent modes or altering the tempo and pitch o your loop. Therst is Time Stretch/Pitch Shit; the second is Varispeed. These two processes handle yourloops audio dierently, so you have a choice as to how youd like your loop to sound.

Time Stretch allows you to speed up or slow down your loops tempo without altering itspitch. Pitch Shit allows you to change the pitch o your loop without altering its tempo. You can engage both o these processes at the same time i you wish. To enable urtherDSP and routing options, always save your recording ater applying these eects.

With Varispeed, you can speed up or slow down your loops tempo and its pitch will bedirectly aected. When you increase tempo, pitch will also go up. Conversely, i youlower the pitch o your loop, the tempo will also slow down. Tempo is measured as apercentage o your loops original tempo, and pitch is measured in semi-tones.

Heres how to use these eects, beginning with Time Stretch/Pitch Shit.

Recording RestrictionsWhen using Time Stretch/Pitch Shit, the main restriction to keep in mind is that onlyone mono instance o processing can be applied per active session. To work around this, allyou have to do is save your recording beore adding your next overdub. That way, you canstart resh with a rendered audio le and be ree to apply Time Stretch/Pitch Shit again.

For example, to record along with one o Spider Jams internal Songs, begin by loading theSong as usual. I youd like to record in a lower key at the same tempo, press the SONGbutton and navigate to the Tempo/Pitch Modes menu item. Press the R Arrow, select theTime Stretching And Pitch Shiting menu item, then lower the pitch to where you want

it and record your loop, setting the loop start and end points as you normally would.

Now beore you overdub a new guitar track to your loop, you must save the loop as aRecording. Press the SAVE button, navigate to Save Recording To Internal, then pressthe R Arrow, name your recording and complete the save. This rees up Spider Jams TimeStretch/Pitch Shit processing or the next layer o overdubs. You can then load yourrecording, overdub a new guitar track, and change the tempo or pitch again i desired.

Another example would be changing the tempo or key o a guitar track ater its alreadybeen recorded. As mentioned on the previous page, i you want to preview your guitar

track in a dierent key or tempo, you can use Time Stretch/Pitch Shit to listen to it, butthe sound wont be exactly right until you actually save it as a new recording.

The way to do this would be to set your Pitch/Tempo Preview to optimize the sound orwhichever output youre listening to, either the Spider Jam Amp Out or the RCA LineOuts, then apply Time Stretch/Pitch Shit to the guitar track and adjust the tempo orpitch until you get it sounding right.

When youve decided on the nal tempo and pitch o your guitar track, save it as aRecording and give it a new name. You can then load your saved guitar track or playbackor overdubbing, and be able to change the tempo or pitch again i desired.

In summary: always save or mix down your recording ater applying Time Stretch orPitch Shit. This rees up the processing engine so you can use it again i you want to.

There are many ways to work with Spider Jam. You may want to use only the guitar AmpModels and FX while jamming to a Song. Or you may want to record and overdub complexloops, with or without a reerence Drum track, or create your own custom loops.

When recording, youll want to develop an ecient workfow to keep your recordingsbacked up and organized as you go. You should also keep in mind that Spider Jam haslimited memory, so its best to avoid lling it up. The key is to backup to SD card oten.

As described in Chapter 1, i you ollow a ew simple guidelines, its easy to keep organized.Start out with a clean SD card, back up oten, and keep the Spider Jams internal memoryas ree as possible. With that in mind, lets review a ew o the basics:

RecordingYou can either record to a Drum or Song loop, or record in ree time. As described in thePilots Handbook, to create a Drum loop, select the Drums tab, load a Drum track, then

press REC. Press STOP ater 4 bars, or example. Youll be automatically taken to theRecordings tab. From there, simply press REC again to begin overdubbing. I youd liketo record in ree time instead, select the Recordings tab and youll see this screen:

From here, just press REC and play guitar. When youre done, press STOP. Your end-point will be set and your guitar track will loop accordingly. For groove-based loops itsusually best to use a Drum track as a time reerence, which you can always mute later on.

SavingI you like the track you just recorded, youll want it save it. Press the SAVE button andnavigate to Save Recording To Internal. Press R Arrow, name your track and save it.

Your track will be saved to Spider Jams internal memory, ready or overdubs.

Think o a JAM le as a older. Within that older are three les that make up eachrecording. Storing them as one JAM le makes it a lot easier to keep track o all your les.Youll see the JAM le extension i you look at your le names on your computer.

WARNING: do not change the names o your JAM les on your computer. I you do,they may not play back properly in the Spider Jam. To avoid issues, always name your lesin the Spider Jam when you rst save them. Try to stay within an 8 character limit.

LoopsSpider Jam loops come in 2 favors, either as part o a recording that you created in theSpider Jam, or as a WAV le that was mixed down rom a Spider Jam recording or importedrom your computer. Loops created in Spider Jam will always work together with the Songor Drum track you started with, but there are many other creative ways to work with loops. Here are two examples o using WAV les to create multiple loops in Spider Jam:

Record multiple overdubs to your original loop, then mix them down as individualWAV les using the Spider Jam Playback Levels to mute the other tracks. Build anynumber o tracks that will sync together, then edit and mix them in your DAW.

Create custom loops on your computer, then import them into Spider Jam orjamming, perorming or overdubbing. As long as your imported WAV les match theexact length o the original reerence loop, theyll sync and loop together perectly.

Any mono 16 bit 44.1 WAV le can be imported and looped in Spider Jam or urtheroverdubbing, including Spider Jam Mixdown les. This greatly extends the unctionalityo Spider Jam. To demonstrate the possibilities, heres a multi-track tutorial to try:

Press the SONG button, navigate to the Drums tab, then turn the wheel to select095 Straight Groove (or use any other Drum track). Press the R Arrow to load it.

Press the SONG button again to display the Tempo/Pitch Modes menu item. Selectit, press R Arrow and select Time Stretching And Pitch Shiting. Set the tempo to101 bpm. Press REC and watch the count in the display. Ater 4 bars, press STOP.

    appendix : FaQ

Here are some requently asked questions and answers about Spider Jam eatures andunctionality that you might nd useul:

    Available Recording Time

Q: Whenever I load a track into Spider Jams memory or overdubbing, I notice myavailable recording time is reduced by double the duration o that track; why is that?

A: In order or Spider Jam to perorm an Undo unction, it must buer the currentlyloaded track in memory. This results in allocating additional memory equal to the size oeach currenly loaded track, which reduces your available recording time accordingly.

    Duplicate WAV Files

Q: When I copy a WAV le rom my Mac to SD card, then copy that to my Win PC, I

see a duplicate le that doesnt play back. Whats happening here?

A: When you copy a WAV le on a Mac, the OS creates a hidden le or its own use.

Spider Jam will ignore this hidden le, and you should ignore it on your PC as well.

    Time Stamp

Q: When Im working on my computer and I do a get ino on one o my recordings or

WAV les, the date is displayed as unknown. Why isnt a creation date displayed?

A: Spider Jam has no date stamping eature, so it doesnt create a date or your les.

    Pitch Shit

Q: I recorded a blues lead guitar jam to one o the Spider Jam Songs, changing the key

by raising the Pitch Shit by 2 semitones, 4 times. When I mixed it down, my guitarwas in the same key the entire time. Why didnt the guitar change key?

A: Only 1 instance o Pitch Shit can be applied per active session. When you mixed

your guitar as a WAV le, the Pitch Shit was being applied to the Song, changing

pitch the way you originally set it, so it couldnt process your guitar at the same time.

Next time, mix the Song as a WAV rst, then overdub your guitar to the WAV mix.

Time Stretch Wont Work A Second Time

Q: I made an 8-bar loop o a Drum track, then sped it up rom 100 bpm to 110 bpm.

Ater I recorded a guitar track, it elt too ast, so I tried to slow everything down to 105bpm. Spider Jam locked me out o changing the tempo again. Why is that?

A: The Time Stretch eature can only work on one mono track at a time. Since the

Spider Jam Drum track is being processed to match your recorded guitar track, you

cant re-adjust the tempo o the live drums and recorded guitar at the same time. To

change the tempo again, do a Mixdown, a Clear All, then load your Mix to start resh.

For uture reerence, the best way to go is to determine your tempo beore you record.

    Loop Overdub Volume

Q: I like to overdub several harmony guitars to a loop, but when I let it roll or 3 or 4

passes my backing track loses volume. Why is this happening?

A: Your Recorder Overdub Volume is probably set to something less than 100%, soyour volume decreases every time your track loops in Overdub mode. Press the Drums/

Song button twice and navigate to the Recorder Overdub menu item, then press the R

Arrow to select it. Use the wheel to set your Volume to 100% and it wont decrease.

    Quick Capture

Q: Spider Jams silkscreen reads Rec+Undo = Quick Capture; why doesnt this work?

A: To engage Quick Capture, you must rst step on Undo, then the Record switch.

Were sorry we didnt make this clear in the Pilots Handbook.

Cant Overdub To A Time Stretched Recording

Q: I recorded a simple rhythm guitar track, then I did a Time Stretch to slow it down.

When I tried to overdub a lead guitar part, I was locked out o doing so. Why?

A: The Time Stretch setting you applied to your guitar track has claimed the DSP

processing, which can only work on one track at a time. Since the Time Stretch is still

active, you must rst Save your recording at the new tempo, then do a Clear All. At

that point, simply recall your saved recording, then you can overdub guitar as usual.

    Naming Restrictions

Q: Whenever I import a WAV le rom my computer into the Spider Jam, why does it

always cut o the last part o the name?

A: Spider Jam has an 8-character name limit. Although your original le name will

remain unchanged on your PC, try to use shorter names or les whenever possible.

    Routing Goes To Mono

Q: I recorded a vocal on the Mic/Aux track, and a guitar on the Guitar track. Imrouting my vocal to a P.A. and my guitar to a guitar amp. Id like to slow the tempo

down a bit then overdub a harmony guitar part, but when I do so, all my tracks go to

mono, routed to both the P.A. and guitar amp. How can I avoid this?

A: When applying Time Stretch to two dierent tracks, they will be summed to mono.

This is because the Time Stretch DSP can only operate on one mono track at a time,

so your routing was summed to mono. To return to normal routing, you must rst Saveyour current recording to internal memory with Time Stretch applied.

RCA Volume Goes Down When I Use Headphones

Q: My Spider Jam RCA outputs eed my mixer at a very good level, but when I plug inmy headphones my RCAs level goes way down. Whats happening?

A: The Spider Jam RCAs normally send 100% level, but when you plug in headphonestheyre controlled by the Master Volume, which is probably set to a much lower level.

    Aux Track Distortion

Q: When I use the Aux track or recording my guitar track and I add Aux FX Presets, myguitar sometimes sounds distorted when I play it back; it sounds ne while recording.

    Whats up?

A: When recording to the Aux track, youre essentially in input monitor mode,

meaning youre hearing your guitars input, not its output. When you add Aux FX like

EQ, or example, youre also boosting level. This can result in distortion that you only

hear on playback. The cure or this is, i youre recording on the Aux track and youre

boosting your level with Aux FX, simply lower your input level to avoid distortion.

    SD Card Backup Details

Q: Ive just started recording with my Spider Jam and my internal memory is already

lling up. I got an SD card to update to v2.07, but Im new to recording and Im a bitconused about backups, WAV les, JAM les, etc. Can you give me some tips on thebest way to do backups and keep my Spider Jam recordings organized?

A: No problem. The best way to manage your recordings is to think o Spider Jamsinternal memory as a scratchpad, and get into the habit o backing up your les to SDcard ater every session. Here are some workfow suggestions that might be helpul:

Transer all your internal recordings to the SD card using a Transer All command.

Remove the SD card rom your Spider Jam and back it up to your computer (openthe SD cards icon on your computer, then you drag and drop the Line 6 Folder toyour computers desktop, making a copy o everything on the SD card).

Return the SD card to your Spider Jam and conrm you can load one o the recordingsrom it, just to triple check that everything is working as expected.

Now that youre sure everything is sae on the SD card, and also backed up on yourcomputer, erase all recordings rom your Spider Jams internal memory.

When making new recordings, always save them to the SD card as you work.

Periodically return the SD card to your computer and re-do your backup, so copies oyour latest les are always backed up on your computer. (Create new olders on yourcomputer, or example, organized by date. To do this, create a older or each month,

then copy your current Spider Jam Line 6 older into the current months older).

I you keep all your recordings on SD card, rather than in Spider Jams internalmemory, it means youll always be ready to quickly back up your data, and everythingwill be quickly and easily accessible rom your computer. This is similar to the waymost digital cameras work with an SD card, so think o it that way.

It also results in the maximum internal memory being available or use when making

new recordings. Remember that Spider Jams internal memory is your workingmemory or recording, and i youve got lots o memory taken up internally by savedrecordings, you may nd that youll run out o working memory to do new recordingstoo quickly, especially i you make longer recordings. So its best to keep it clean.

And last but not least, working this way means you never have to wonder whetherthe latest version o a recording was saved to internal memory or SD card, which canhappen i you try to use both or recordings you continue to update. Good luck.
