    ABOUTSPIDER Our Mission

To learn and develop new technologies.

    To make information freely accessible.

To share knowledge with one and all.

Spider is the students technical group

of National Institute of Technology,Tiruchirappalli. Our primary work is in fields of

    Computer Science, Electronics and Internet

    Technologies.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Hemalatha

    Thiyagarajan, Associate Dean (Students), we

undertake self funded projects and conduct

periodic workshops and courses for students. We

also host and maintain the most popular and

informative site on the campus intranet.

    ESSAGE

    FROMSTAFFADV

    ISOR

Spider has come a long way since 2003! Over the

past 9 years they have consistently worked towards

successful implementation of several student research

    projects.

This year Spider conducted various workshops and

held talks on the latest in technology. We at spider

measure the success of the courses offered in terms

of the number of students who take up minor

research projects in the field. In this sense theworkshops and talks were a great success.

The mission statement is to share knowledge and to

use technology to the hilt. Spider members are

actively involved in getting local access to ocw@mit

courses by setting up a mirror site in our campus.

This will help the students access the latest course

    contents locally.

My congratulations to the team this year for the

record number of innovative project proposals they

have presented. I wish the current and future spider

members every success in their efforts.Dr. Hemalatha Thiyagarajan

    PROJECTS

The best way to learn things is

    through doing them.

We work on various projects tomake our beloved campus

    technologically more advanced and

that is the way we learn.

    The satisfaction of innovation

    drives us to work towards

    inventing.

    Year 2011-12 witnessed amazing

work by our team in vastly different

    areas ranging from App

    Development to Image Processing

    and Robotics.

    ESTURE

    RECOGN

    ITION

    This interactive image processing system

involves the control of an appliance or robot based

on the corresponding hand gestures made by theuser.

A microcontroller acts as an interface between the

gesture input from the image processing system

and the appliance/robot which is being controlled.

The user has to simply make gestures in front of

the camera and the appliance or robot will act

    accordingly.

    CONTROLOF

    BOTUSINGOBJECTTRACKING

In OPEN CV, the object needed to betracked is first isolated using IMAGE

    PROCESSING.

Then the position or the centroid of the

    object is calculates.

Based on the position of the object the

    bot different signals are generated.

These signals are sent via serial

communication to a bot using which the

motion of the bot is controlled.

    BUNKSCORE

    APP

The app keeps track of the number of

bunks made in a subject, subjects can be

added and removed by the user dependingon his /her requirements.

When the number of bunks reach a danger

level, as set by the user, a warning is

issued. The app aims to solve one of the very basic

problems faced by the college students.

The first version of the app is available on

    the Android Market

FOODIEAPP This app is for food-lovers.

It is more like a social network for

food lovers, it enables its users to

find out where good food is available

in the nearby locations at that instant,

giving them an opportunity to enjoy

    the same.

We plan to release the app in thebeginning of the next semester.

    SPIVISION

Spider's video streaming site, it hosts more

than 50 videos ranging from MIT OCW to

    Google tech talks.

The aim is to provide speedy access to the

    video contents for our user,.

It is aimed at minimizing the need to wait

    for the video to buffer.

The user can view them instantly.

    It can be accessed via

    spider.nitt.edu/spivision

    COD

    ELABS A platform for organizing

coding contests, it has a lot of useful

    resources for anyone interested in

    coding.

We plan to organize a series of

    coding contests using this platform.

    As of yet its under

construction and is to be launched by the

    beginning of the next semester.

The project aims to convert any screen/surface intotouch sensitive screens using webcams.

Two cameras are to be put on two corners of any

    screen/surface (facing towards the diagonally

opposite corner of the screen) and by studying the

live video stream from cameras we can detect when

and where the finger has come in contact with the

    screen.

    We organise workshops on

basic as well as relativelyadvanced topics for students

    within the campus.

This course was started with an intention of

imbibing people with an interest for MATLAB

    and Image Processing.

The workshop taught them how to program

and use graphics in MATLABs numerical

computing environment.Starting from the basic MATLAB functions

for image processing, this workshop covered

the in-depth information of algorithms used

    for standard image processing applications.

    THE TEAM

We are a team of eighteen enthusiastic people

    belonging to various departments.

Even as all of us have different skills sets, we all

share a common passion for technology.

With everyone at full freedom to implement their

ideas, our team enjoys a unique status in the campus.

    TheInduction

    Process

Every year, few enthusiastic students are

inducted into the spider team. Second year

UG and first year PG students are allowed to

take part in the induction process. The

induction process is quite intensive and over

130 students appeared for induction process

    this year for 10 openings.

The preliminary round tests the students on

    aptitude, sciences and technical knowledge.

This is followed by a personal interview on

the next day. The interview basically focuseson identifying people who have passion for

    technology.
