INTRODUCTION
The SPIE Student Chapter at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (Universidad
Autónoma de Nuevo León) was founded in January 25th 2008. Located in the northeast of
México, the Autonomous University of Nuevo Léon has a complete offer of education in the
area of physics, having optics and photonics as a fundamental part of their research areas.
At the beginning the Chapter had only 11 members, nowadays we have 18 members and
one of the goals for this 2012 is to increase our chapter members to 30 or more.

The purposes of the SPIE UANL Student Chapter UANL are:
The diffusion at different levels of optics and photonics inside and outside of our University.
Establishing communication with industries related to optics.
Helping into the professional development of the students involved in optics fields.
In order to achieve our goal of diffusing the optics, every year we make outreach events like 'Optics for Kids', and this new year we want to increase the number of this type of events and do more experiments with the intention of involving the kids into the sciences.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES
We had some activities during the year, unfortunately somehow we had 3 events canceled, which were:

Official Meetings
During the year we had 6 official meetings and some informal meetings.

During the official meetings, we decided the next events where we are going to work on, and the officers who will represent us in the National and International meetings were chosen.

In the case of the informal meetings, we elaborated experiments, and the group tasks related with the research and outreach project were assigned.

A very important activity this year was the recruiting of new members. At the beginning of the semester we placed a stand with a person giving information to the students.

Also, we‟ve spread information about the chapter by talking with other members of our academic community; this helped us attract more people to the chapter.
SPIE UANL Web Page
The last trimester of the 2011 we decided to elaborate a Web Page. In this site we have the information about all our events, and will serve to establish another contact point for all the chapter members and the students of our University.
Other reason to create the Web Page was because we want a place where the chapter members can upload news, articles, works or other things related with optics and photonics.
Nowadays, we continue working in the Web Page, because we want a complete Web Site with more contents and functionalities, one of the ideas is to have the information in 2 languages (Spanish/English) and have a calendar with all the events and activities.

During the summer in our University we participated in the Educational Summer Kids Camp with some experiments related with optics.

We send our officers to San Diego to represent us in the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop at Optics + Photonics, where Ciro Quilantan, Perla Viera and Victoria Navarro participated in all the activities related with the Workshop.

Ciro, who was president of the chapter in 2011, exposed our chapter activities with a poster in the Student Chapter Exhibit Mixer.
Perla Viera and Victoria Navarro participated actively in the Optics + Photonis Congress by presenting a project each of them. Perla Viera exposed a poster with the title: “Remote Ultrasensitive Laser Microphone” on August 22th. On the other hand, Victoria Navarro exposed the project: “Novel Optical Refraction Index” on August 25th.

Visit to PIIT (Parque de Investigación e Innovación Tecnológica)
On September 7th members of the Chapter visited the facilities of the Research Parkland Technology Innovation (PIIT) with focus on nano-optics science laboratory, they were given a tour and were invited to work on projects in different science laboratories offered by the UANL.

Short Course: “Atmospheric Optics”

PhD. Miguel Torres visited us on September 9th to present his work in „Atmospheric Optics‟ and other works.
The course was integrated by 4 sessions. The first 2 were „Cellular tracking‟ and „New Optic Materials‟.

Later, the officers of the chapters and some members had lunch with PhD. Torres, during the lunch we talked about his projects and share our opinions and experiences about optics and photonics research.

Last, we had 2 practical sessions related with „Atmospheric Optics‟, during these sessions we learn about the optics inside the sky, the clouds and other components of out atmosphere, but, also, we learn useful practices related with optics for kids.

2nd Meeting of National Chapters SPIE/OSA
On the 12th and October 13th, our Vice President Mario Lopez, represented us at the second annual meeting of national chapters, exposing our activities, sharing ideas with other chapters and networking for national activities.
At the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics were given tours around the laboratories, which PhD in charge gave a little talk of their lines of research.

There were round tables where all members of chapters exposed their activities and listened to ideas from other chapters in order to obtain an improvement in their respective chapters.

4th University Meeting of Photonics & Optics.
From November 23th to November 25th took place the „Fourth University Meeting of Photonics and Optics‟ in Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, in which our vice president, Mario Lopez, attended to conferences exposed by Doctors from the „Optics Research Center and National Institute Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics‟. In addition, he attended a workshop of COMSOL Multiphysics. Last, he made networking with other universities students.

Optics for Kids

With the purpose of divulge the optics and photonic to children, on November 24th we had our most important outreach event: „Optics for Kids‟, in which one we could show a lot of experiments related with optics to children around 11 and 12 years old. We had 130 elementary school students divided in 8 different groups.

We had more than 20 experiments distributed in different bases. Among the experiments we had a 3D workshop, a dark blue with some experiments and games related with light, shadows, polarization and more.

In some bases we gift little souvenirs for the children like the 3D glasses, a bookmark with the Star Cycle, printed animated gifs and glow rubber bands.

At the lunch time, the kids got along with the SPIE members, other students and also the teachers and professors of our school.

Also, the PhD. Juan Carlos Ruíz gave a talk on recreational physics. During this talk the kids learn some easy experiments and understand the existence of the physics in the diary life.

Last, we took the souvenir photos of the groups with the guides of each one.

As part of the staff worked about 15 chapter members and 35 volunteers from different schools, especially from the Physic and Math School.

To close the year we organized a traditional Mexican party: „Posada‟. In this event the SPIE members had the opportunity to talk with our advisor and the directors of the Physic and Math School.
At the party we enjoyed tamales, champurrado, churros and a lot of candy. With this we close the 2011 SPIE Chapter Activities.

2012 ACTIVITIES
We are planning new activities for the 2012, at this moment we are deciding the feasible dates of the events for the members:
- Party of “Reyes Magos”: In this day we celebrate the January 6th with the traditional Mexican “rosca”.
- Officer‟s Elections: Every year we have our first meeting with the intention to elaborate our action plan for the New Year and change the officers of the Chapter.
- SPIE Chapter Meetings: We are planning at least six meetings with the Chapter members.
- SPIE – OSA Chapters Meetings: We will be having at least three meetings with the OSA Chapter of the UANL.
- Participation in the 1st Forum of the Research Center in Physic and Math Sciences: We are planning to diffuse information about the Chapter.
- Party of the Candelaria‟s Day: We have another social event, because the persons that obtained the Baby Jesus in the Rosca must make a party with tamales for all the SPIE members.
- Day of the Optics – Diffusion of the Chapter: In this day we have 2 conferences during the day to promote the optics and photonics and, also, invite to other students who wants to join us in the SPIE Chapter.
- Khet Tournaments: We are planning to have at least three events where we could play Khet, and teach other people how to play it.
- Trainings for Outreach: We would have three or more sessions during the year to learn about better ways to make outreach events, and plan our experiments for kids and young by the hand of an expert in the education of the sciences, like Dr. Juan Carlos Ruíz.
- Optics in your School: The event consist in visiting an Elementary or Junior High School to make an Outreach event with courses, conferences and experiments related with optic, photonic and physic.
- Sustainability Forum: We are organizing a series of conferences, courses and expositions related with the sustainability, alternative energy and other forms the take care of our planet, specially focused in the saving energy area.
- National Visiting Lecturers: We are going to receive at least to four national researchers that will present their work in different areas related with the optics and photonics.
- Student Day Party: On May we celebrate the Student Day in México, and we want to have a social event in order to integrate all our chapter members.
- Optics in Summer Kids Camp: We will participate in the Summer Kids Camp using some experiments to create in children interest in Optics.
- Optics + Photonics 2012: We will send 2 or more of our chapter members to participate in the Leadership Workshop in San Diego and at least one of them must attend to the Optics + Photonics. Also some of our chapter members will be working in a project in order to submit abstracts to the O+P congress.

- Annual National Meeting of Chapters: Like every year we will participate by sending one or more of our chapter members in the SPIE Annual National Meeting to present our work and make plans with other Chapters around the country.
- Participation in the 5th Exact Sciences Congress: Every year the Faculty of Physic and Math School organizes a Congress related with Math, Physic and Computer Sciences, and we are going to make a little exhibition of our Chapter and some of our Science projects and our experiments for outreach events.
- Christmas Party: We will celebrate Christmas and the end of the year in a little party with piñata, candy, tamales and champurrado.
