CHAPTER ACTIVITIES 2015 - 2016:

We have started our 2nd year of SPIE Student Chapter with a Workshop on Optics to celebrate International Year of Light (IYL) in October, 2015.

1. National Workshop on Optics to celebrate International year of Light

Prof Ajoy Ghatak (formerly at IIT Delhi) and Prof Kehar Singh (distinguished Research Professor at NCU ) were the distinguished speakers. They enlightened the participants on various aspects of optics such as polarization, laser, fiber optics, holography, etc. They also spoke about some of the noble laureates in the field of optics and highlighted their contributions in providing crucial breakthroughs. Pro Vice Chancellor of NCU Gurgaon Brig. SK Sharma gave the opening address and emphasized the importance of optics in science and engineering and congratulated SPIE- Student Chapter of NCU for celebrating the International Year of Light (IYL-2015). The workshop was attended by more than hundred undergraduate and post graduate students from various colleges of NCR.

In addition to the special lecture sessions, there were demonstrative sessions on holography and polarization, in which different types of holograms, polarizer, polarizing sheets etc. were demonstrated. This was followed by a quiz based on optics and its related applications in the field of science and engineering.

The aim of this workshop was to motivate and inspire the students. Interaction with the speakers was highly enlightening for the students. The most-relevant videos, impressive presentations and real-time examples had a tremendous impact on the participants who felt excited to pursue further studies in the field of optics.

3. We have organized an optical phenomenon based game during the club house events at our University.

The NORTHCAP UNIVERSITY organized a 'fiesta' for club activities in the month of February. On this day all clubs and societies of the college come together and put up stalls to promote their society and make people more aware. The SPIE student chapter NCU planned a stall in which we arranged a game named "optical illusion". In this, we had a basket full of water .Inside the water there was a ring .The contestant have to drop the coin into the ring and When a coin falls in water, its trajectory is one of four types determined by its dimensionless moment of inertia and Reynolds number Re: (A) steady; (B) fluttering; (C) chaotic; or (D) tumbling. The dynamics induced by the interaction of the water with the surface of the coin, however, makes the exact landing site difficult to predict a location .This is due to the refraction of light. Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where its speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media. And in the second game we had put another bucket which was filled with water and objects were floating in the water. In that game, each contestant have to pick 10 objects with the help of a toothpick in 30 seconds. We had nearly 50 registrations which is probably the highest among all stalls. The event was definitely a success.
