We are the Hoots Family and we own Hoots Fruits & Vegetables, an urbanaquaponic farm near downtown Whitewater. We raise trout and green leafyvegetables, like lettuce and spinach, in a closed system mutually beneficial toboth plants and fish. The greens are suspended in a bed of water that flowsconstantly with nutrient rich water from the fish tanks. The plants then absorbthe nutrients and "filter" the water and the cleaner water is returned back tothe fish. You can find us at the Whitewater City Market every Saturday withlots of leafy greens for sale. Spinach thrives on cool temperatures so we are only able to grow it in thewinter. Our greenhouse is about 50 degrees in the winter which is ideal forspinach. In the summer, our greenhouse reaches 90 degrees which is too hotfor spinach. Warm temperatures cause the spinach to bolt (start producingseeds)and makes the leaves taste bitter. So fall, winter, and spring are the bestseasons to enjoy fresh spinach.
