Happy April! I love this time of year, when the temperature gets warmer, the flowers and trees begin to show signs of new life, and the days are nice enough to consistently enjoy our toys. I also love April because it marks the beginning of the Schonesland driving season. During the colder months we catch up during monthly Cars and Coffees and Drive and Dines, and April marks the point when many of us remove the car covers that have protected our rides during the months of Iowa hibernation. We check the tire pressure and fluid levels, set our trip odos to zero, and joyfully fling wide open the opportunity for another season of fun.
So, time for the 2016 driving season to begin! Our first big event this year is on Sat. April 9th and is a Schonesland season opener like none other. The day begins at 8:00 with bagels and coffee at longtime member Dennis Bierbaum’s Adel electrical contracting business (check the website and your email for the address). He’ll have cars of a variety of marques to admire and we’ll catch up and anticipate the fun morning drive ahead of us. At 9:30 we’ll be joined by some members of the local BMW and Mini clubs and Vice President Will MacFarland will brief us on the mystery Poker Run that awaits. What’s a Poker Run, you might ask? Drivers will follow clues from the launch point to mystery destinations, and at each stop there will be an opportunity to pick up a poker card. Will you have the best hand by the time we reach our lunchtime destination at Wellman’s Pub and Rooftop Restaurant in West Des Moines? A navigator is encouraged to increase your odds of correctly following the clues and you’ll be able to purchase additional poker cards to increase your chances of a winning hand. This event is close to veteran Will’s heart and has been organized to raise money for a fund established by the parents of the late Major Ben Follansbee. The program matches veterans with trained canine companions to soothe vets’ transitions from military to civilian life and provides needy vets with highly trained service dogs to meet daily or specified medical needs. To understand why these needs are so important check out the rave reviews for the book, Until Tuesday, written by an Iraq War veteran about the dog that saved him. The cost
to participate in the drive is only $20/person but we can do better than that, Schoneslanders! We’re among the fortunate few who have the opportunity to drive the best creations Germany has to offer, and we’ve been blessed. Feel free to double or triple the amount you contribute for the entry fee and add some extra bucks as you purchase additional poker cards. All funds raised during the event will be donated to the program. Please RSVP by Wed. April 6th on the Schonesland Facebook page or directly to Will at [email protected]. If you aren’t able to participate in the run and would like to contribute to this great cause please let Will know.
One of the things I enjoy year round is reading the national Panorama magazine. In the cooler months it makes me dream of driving season, and in the warmer months it cements my love of all things Porsche. How many of you caught Schonesland member Ken Watkins’ beautiful 1986 911 Carrera highlighting the March “From the Regions” Pano column? Ken’s photo won first place in our 40th anniversary calendar contest last year and the magazine agreed it was a winner.
I’ll end with a photo to make you smile. Our daughter and her family live in the Twin Cities and our nearly 3 year old grandson Alex loves cars. On a recent visit to Toys ‘r Us he gravitated toward this lovely vehicle. I have to admire his great taste and look forward to sharing future Porsche adventures with him. Happy Spring, happy driving, and let’s make this month’s fundraiser a blockbuster!

After what amounted to a pretty mild winter, I had only a few minor springtime concerns for my C4S. The tires were getting a bit loud after 15,000 miles (typical in a 996), I had a minor wiggle/shake in about the 60-70mph speed bracket, and I had a few light bulbs that needed replacing. No big deal, I thought. Still, I warned my infinitely patient wife that some Porsche-related expenses were coming our way.
Near-as-makes-no-difference FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS later, I had my car back. This was with the least expensive tire option, mind you!
Strictly from an economic standpoint, does this make sense? Certainly I could buy lots of meaningful things with four grand. That’s at least a quarter-year of food on the family table. Heck, that’s a 944! And as my (infinitely patient, brilliant, beautiful) wife put it, “My ENGAGEMENT RING didn’t cost four thousand dollars.”
This is the part where I could begin a love letter to the car about how great it is and how it’s worth it. I could lapse into a deeply philosophical soliloquy about this is the one occasion where money is actually buying happiness. About how this car is rare and special and deserving of the funds lavished upon its upkeep.
But when the bill comes in for four large and you don’t have a butler to write the check for you, those little fantasies are given a stern look. The new neighbors who’ve just moved in across the street own two white Camrys and a white Corolla. They aren’t likely to have a $4k maintenance bill unless they rear-end a semi-truck while Facebooking. I’m not saying they’re the sort of people that would do that, but I don’t think we’re going to be best friends. Still, there must be some list of reasons why so many people buy Toyotas, and I’m pretty certain “avoidance of unexpected $4k car bills” might be on that list.
That said, I’m not going to swing to a Camry-like extreme as a result of a single, 100,000-mile, 13-year maintenance visit. This is more likely just a semi-subconscious excuse to feed my car-shopping sickness/habit (get rid of this maintenance hog—find something

new! Right?). The realist in me does know that it’d be crazy to abandon my paid-off 996 for pennies on the dollar. And besides, if I had extra money, i.e., if the repairs had not been necessary, I’d probably spend it on car-related stuff anyway. But probably not quite so much of it.

Major Ben Follansbee was a decorated Army Ranger and member of Special Forces who died in December 2012. He served multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and was a HALO Jump Master and Special Forces ODA Team Commander. Ben’s parents, Dr. Bill and Susan Follansbee, have established a fund in Ben’s memory to assist military veterans suffering from unresolved stress by furnishing them with trained therapy animals.
If you wish to join in honoring Ben’s memory, please send your check made payable to Animal Friends, and designate it for the Major Ben Follansbee Pets for Vets Memorial Fund.

Many returning veterans suffer from physical and emotional injuries relating to their time in service, making it difficult to transition back into civilian life.
Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of a life-threatening event such as military combat.
Some estimates state that as many as 20 percent of returning military Some estimates state that as many as 20 percent of returning military veterans suffer from PTSD, and only 2/3 who screened positive are currently receiving treatment.
Medical studies have shown that companion animals signiicantly improve mental and physical health, including reducing stress, depression and anxiety, symptoms often linked with PTSD and combat stress.
According to the ASPCA, every year between 6 and 8 million dogs and cats are abandoned at shelters.
Four million of these dogs and cats are euthanized every year in shelters across America, typically because there is no one to adopt them.
