Deliverable D108 reports on communication activities of the ProPAT project Activities include

the establishment of a communication and dissemination infrastructure comprising various

communication materials and planning of events in which the ProPAT consortium was going to

create awareness and present the projectrsquos results towards the intended target audiences

ProPAT has furthermore successfully initiated the Process Industries Promotion Initiative an

activity that has been founded by the SPIRE projects ProPAT IbD and SHAREBOX and that offers

a new and promising way to efficiently promote the results of the participating projects

1 Introduction

The present document is related to task 104 ldquoCommunication activitiesrdquo and reports on the

implementation of the communication strategy of ProPAT that was presented in deliverable

D104 ldquoCommunication Planrdquo The general objectives of task 104 with respect to

communication and dissemination have been to

communicate and disseminate effectively the project goals and outcomes

set up efficient tools for the communication towards various stakeholders (scientific

communities professionals decisions makers public etc)

exploit synergies in liaisons and collaborations

In deliverable D104 a comprehensive Communication Plan was delivered that set out ProPAT

overall communication and dissemination strategy identified the projectrsquos stakeholder

communities presented a set of core communication messages described the projectrsquos own

communication channels and dissemination materials that are to be produced by the project

listed external dissemination opportunities and set evaluation targets for the project

This deliverable D108 presents an overall report of the communication activities of the ProPAT

consortium

2 Stakeholder groups

The overall objectives of ProPAT communication amp dissemination activities have been grounded

in the projectrsquos core value of delivering an integrated process control approach embedding a

novel monitoring system based on low cost analysers combined with smart sensors for

monitoring in real time the critical control parameters of key processes in the minerals

ceramics non-ferrous metals and chemical process industries The Communication Plan

identified and analysed a set of stakeholder communities These can be classified into four

groups (direct close wider societal) according to the influence and mutual dependence that

exist between these communities and ProPAT Relevant communities are

During the first period of the project direct stakeholders ie partners and other similar projects

31 Website

The project website available via httpwwwPro-PATeu (Figure 1) was officially launched in

October 2015 The website has been developed with an open source content management

system offering multiple access and different user levels according to the ProPAT requirements

The website content is produced by members of the Consortium

results The website has been updated with the official project video and a section on training

materials Additional materials will be updated in a separate results section as soon as the

32 Social media

ProPAT has recently created an ProPAT LinkedIn group

(httpswwwlinkedincomgroups8707007) (

Figure 2) The LinkedIn group has been used to announce the availability of results on the

website or elsewhere eg the ProPAT video on YouTube In addition ProPAT project partners

have used Twitter to promote ProPAT and also SPIRE has twittered about the joint events of

ProPAT with other projects

Furthermore a YouTube channel ldquoPROPAT project - Integrated process control with PATrdquo has

been created which features the ProPAT video

DECHEMA IRIS and the other ProPAT partners will continue to use social media channels to promote the key results of ProPAT including the final public output on the website LinkedIn will particularly be used to also announce events at which ProPAT partners will be presenting the final results A couple of already identified events are presented in the final dissemination plan (D107)

33 Promotional Materials

Promotional material has been created in the first phase of the project to support all partners

with their ProPAT-related dissemination activities The Initial Communication Plan contains

details about the logo visual style guidelines and a set of templates that were made available

to partners at the beginning of the project The generic set of templates has been used by all

project partners involved in the communication and dissemination activities of the ProPAT

project In total the following materials have been developed over the course of the project

primarily is used during conferences

and fairs and has two basic functions

Firstly it shall attract visitors at first

glance and make them curious to learn

more about the project Secondly it

enables a first impression of the

architecture and the key features of

the project The poster was presented

on several events in particular on

exhibition stands among others at

4 Collaborations with other projects and initiatives

4 Collaborations with other projects and initiatives

Collaboration with other EU-nationally funded projects and initiatives is a valuable

opportunity for exchanging ideas findings and approaches and often leads to new

insights in research and technology development The ProPAT consortium had joined

forces with IbD and SHAREBOX two European funded SPIRE projects that address similar

stakeholder communities The projects founded the ldquoProcess Industries Promotion

Initiativerdquo an initiative that aims at supporting a more efficient promotion of valuable

research results from public funded research projects It allows for close cooperation

with other projects in particular in terms of a cross-project communication in order to

improve technology and knowledge transfer

6 Direct communication at events

ProPAT put a strong focus on organizing and attending conferences workshops courses and

exhibitions which specifically addressed the target communities of ProPAT thereby reaching

out to stakeholders that have potential interest in accessing ProPAT technologies and results

During the course of the project ProPAT partners participated in 35 events covering 15

European member states plus China Canada Japan the US and others 10 events have been

organized by ProPAT partners some of these are reported in more detail in chapter 7 27

lectures and 12 posters have been presented and 4 exhibitions have been used to demonstrate

and display prototypes and results In total more than 17000 stakeholders have participated

in these events Table 2 shows the detailed list of the events attended by ProPAT partners during

the project These events have been extensively used for networking and creating awareness

for the ProPAT project

7 Special ProPAT roadshow events

ProPAT partners have organized a number of dedicated events to communicate ProPAT

objectives goals and results to relevant stakeholders ProPAT has hereby reached out to more

than 17000 thousand stakeholders representing potential beneficiaries of ProPAT technologies

and results Including media activities more than 100000 stakeholders have had access to first-

hand information on ProPAT via these events

A key activity in this respect have been joint events and exhibitions that have been organized

by DECHEMA with other related SPIRE projects ie members of the Process Industries

Promotion Initiative described in chapter 4

71 Workshop series ldquoTackling the future of plant operationrdquo

ProPAT has co-organised a series of two events under the headline ldquoTackling the future of plant

operationrdquo jointly with other SPIRE projects These workshops have also been reported in D92

as these events combined dissemination and training aspects A first workshop at the DECHEMA

site in Frankfurt on 25 January 2017 had the subtitle ldquoHow to integrate online data-analytics

process control and PAT for optimal plant operationrdquo Selected representatives from the

different sectors of the process industry and automation experts have been invited to this

workshop to learn and discuss how to integrate online data-analytics process control and PAT

for optimal plant operation Aspects covered included online data-analytics monitoring

applications data management data security novel sensor technologies data-driven and

rigorous process modelling and process control

Several case studies on the integrated use of novel sensors online monitoring and process

control were presented ProPAT contributed with an overview on ProPAT and two case studies

one on Continuous on-line process control of polyester resins manufacturing by Megara

Resins the other on Mineral and metallic powders milling process control with ProPAT

technologies by Grecian Magnesite Furthermore the Granulometer ProG Prototype was

exhibited and introduced to interested stakeholders The event was attended by 100

international participants from industry and academia

A second event entitled ldquoJointly towards a digital process industryrdquo took place in Barcelona 13-

14 December 2017 This was jointly organised with CONSENS DISIRE iCspec and RECOBA all of

them being related SPIRE-01-2014 projects on ldquoIntegrated Process Controlrdquo

The workshop started with overview presentations by the 5 organising projects followed by

highlights and case studies from the projects ProPAT contributed with the ldquoNIR control of

polymer processingrdquo case study presentedrdquo Digitalization Manufacturing ndash Impact on Industry

Society and Economyrdquo The second day was dedicated to workshops on the following topics

Novel online sensing equipment closed-loop control methods new software tools for data

integration big data analysis online monitoring engineering support The subsequent B2B

brokerage event provided the opportunity for bilateral meetings to discuss future

collaborations The extremely well-received workshop had 139 attendees from 16 European

countries with particularly strong participation from Spain (40) and Germany (36) Participants

included process industry representatives technology providers and academic and RTO

representatives Combination of the lectures with dedicated workshops on individual topics and

a B2B matchmaking event facilitating bilateral face-to-face contacts proved very efficient for

attracting industrial participants which comprised 60 of the participants in particular

chemical steel industry minerals and mining industry as well as sensor and process control

equipment and system providers

72 EUROPACT joint stand

The European Conference on Process Analytics and Control Technology (EUROPACT) is a

conference series covering new technologies in process analytics and their implementation in

various fields The 4th EUROPACT 10-12 May 2017 in Potsdam Germany has been selected as an

event of high relevance for ProPAT which attracted 220 scientists and users of process analytics

from academia and industry The conference and a well-received SPIRE group stand with the

projects IbD Consens ProPAT SHAREBOX FUDIPO and DISIRE was organized by DECHEMA A

press release on the event and the SPIRE representation was issued on the SPIRE website

7 Special ProPAT roadshow events

ProPAT partners have organized a number of dedicated events to communicate ProPAT

objectives goals and results to relevant stakeholders ProPAT has hereby reached out to more

than 17000 thousand stakeholders representing potential beneficiaries of ProPAT technologies

and results Including media activities more than 100000 stakeholders have had access to first-

hand information on ProPAT via these events

A key activity in this respect have been joint events and exhibitions that have been organized

by DECHEMA with other related SPIRE projects ie members of the Process Industries

Promotion Initiative described in chapter 4

71 Workshop series ldquoTackling the future of plant operationrdquo

ProPAT has co-organised a series of two events under the headline ldquoTackling the future of plant

operationrdquo jointly with other SPIRE projects These workshops have also been reported in D92

as these events combined dissemination and training aspects A first workshop at the DECHEMA

site in Frankfurt on 25 January 2017 had the subtitle ldquoHow to integrate online data-analytics

process control and PAT for optimal plant operationrdquo Selected representatives from the

different sectors of the process industry and automation experts have been invited to this

workshop to learn and discuss how to integrate online data-analytics process control and PAT

for optimal plant operation Aspects covered included online data-analytics monitoring

applications data management data security novel sensor technologies data-driven and

rigorous process modelling and process control

Several case studies on the integrated use of novel sensors online monitoring and process

control were presented ProPAT contributed with an overview on ProPAT and two case studies

one on Continuous on-line process control of polyester resins manufacturing by Megara

Resins the other on Mineral and metallic powders milling process control with ProPAT

technologies by Grecian Magnesite Furthermore the Granulometer ProG Prototype was

exhibited and introduced to interested stakeholders The event was attended by 100

international participants from industry and academia

A second event entitled ldquoJointly towards a digital process industryrdquo took place in Barcelona 13-

14 December 2017 This was jointly organised with CONSENS DISIRE iCspec and RECOBA all of

them being related SPIRE-01-2014 projects on ldquoIntegrated Process Controlrdquo

The workshop started with overview presentations by the 5 organising projects followed by

highlights and case studies from the projects ProPAT contributed with the ldquoNIR control of

polymer processingrdquo case study presentedrdquo Digitalization Manufacturing ndash Impact on Industry

Society and Economyrdquo The second day was dedicated to workshops on the following topics

Novel online sensing equipment closed-loop control methods new software tools for data

integration big data analysis online monitoring engineering support The subsequent B2B

brokerage event provided the opportunity for bilateral meetings to discuss future

collaborations The extremely well-received workshop had 139 attendees from 16 European

countries with particularly strong participation from Spain (40) and Germany (36) Participants

included process industry representatives technology providers and academic and RTO

representatives Combination of the lectures with dedicated workshops on individual topics and

a B2B matchmaking event facilitating bilateral face-to-face contacts proved very efficient for

attracting industrial participants which comprised 60 of the participants in particular

chemical steel industry minerals and mining industry as well as sensor and process control

equipment and system providers

72 EUROPACT joint stand

The European Conference on Process Analytics and Control Technology (EUROPACT) is a

conference series covering new technologies in process analytics and their implementation in

various fields The 4th EUROPACT 10-12 May 2017 in Potsdam Germany has been selected as an

event of high relevance for ProPAT which attracted 220 scientists and users of process analytics

from academia and industry The conference and a well-received SPIRE group stand with the

projects IbD Consens ProPAT SHAREBOX FUDIPO and DISIRE was organized by DECHEMA A

press release on the event and the SPIRE representation was issued on the SPIRE website

7 Special ProPAT roadshow events

ProPAT partners have organized a number of dedicated events to communicate ProPAT

objectives goals and results to relevant stakeholders ProPAT has hereby reached out to more

than 17000 thousand stakeholders representing potential beneficiaries of ProPAT technologies

and results Including media activities more than 100000 stakeholders have had access to first-

hand information on ProPAT via these events

A key activity in this respect have been joint events and exhibitions that have been organized

by DECHEMA with other related SPIRE projects ie members of the Process Industries

Promotion Initiative described in chapter 4

71 Workshop series ldquoTackling the future of plant operationrdquo

ProPAT has co-organised a series of two events under the headline ldquoTackling the future of plant

operationrdquo jointly with other SPIRE projects These workshops have also been reported in D92

as these events combined dissemination and training aspects A first workshop at the DECHEMA

site in Frankfurt on 25 January 2017 had the subtitle ldquoHow to integrate online data-analytics

process control and PAT for optimal plant operationrdquo Selected representatives from the

different sectors of the process industry and automation experts have been invited to this

workshop to learn and discuss how to integrate online data-analytics process control and PAT

for optimal plant operation Aspects covered included online data-analytics monitoring

applications data management data security novel sensor technologies data-driven and

rigorous process modelling and process control

Several case studies on the integrated use of novel sensors online monitoring and process

control were presented ProPAT contributed with an overview on ProPAT and two case studies

one on Continuous on-line process control of polyester resins manufacturing by Megara

Resins the other on Mineral and metallic powders milling process control with ProPAT

technologies by Grecian Magnesite Furthermore the Granulometer ProG Prototype was

exhibited and introduced to interested stakeholders The event was attended by 100

international participants from industry and academia

them being related SPIRE-01-2014 projects on ldquoIntegrated Process Controlrdquo

The workshop started with overview presentations by the 5 organising projects followed by

highlights and case studies from the projects ProPAT contributed with the ldquoNIR control of

polymer processingrdquo case study presentedrdquo Digitalization Manufacturing ndash Impact on Industry

Society and Economyrdquo The second day was dedicated to workshops on the following topics

Novel online sensing equipment closed-loop control methods new software tools for data

integration big data analysis online monitoring engineering support The subsequent B2B

brokerage event provided the opportunity for bilateral meetings to discuss future

collaborations The extremely well-received workshop had 139 attendees from 16 European

countries with particularly strong participation from Spain (40) and Germany (36) Participants

included process industry representatives technology providers and academic and RTO

representatives Combination of the lectures with dedicated workshops on individual topics and

a B2B matchmaking event facilitating bilateral face-to-face contacts proved very efficient for

attracting industrial participants which comprised 60 of the participants in particular

chemical steel industry minerals and mining industry as well as sensor and process control

equipment and system providers

The European Conference on Process Analytics and Control Technology (EUROPACT) is a

conference series covering new technologies in process analytics and their implementation in

various fields The 4th EUROPACT 10-12 May 2017 in Potsdam Germany has been selected as an

event of high relevance for ProPAT which attracted 220 scientists and users of process analytics

from academia and industry The conference and a well-received SPIRE group stand with the

projects IbD Consens ProPAT SHAREBOX FUDIPO and DISIRE was organized by DECHEMA A

press release on the event and the SPIRE representation was issued on the SPIRE website

73 ACHEMA joint stand

ACHEMA 2018 has been perceived as the largest communication and dissemination opportunity

of ProPAT results With more than 3800 exhibitors and around 150000 visitors from about 100

countries ACHEMA is the world forum and leading show for the Process Industries DECHEMA

has organized a SPIRE group stand with 10 SPIRE projects in which ProPAT had a dedicated

space The stand was positioned in the Research and Innovation Hall 92 and attracted a large

number of stakeholders including industrial decision makers searching for innovations but also

media representatives

ACHEMA was particularly attractive for the SPIRE community as the 6th SPIRE annual brokerage

event took also place as a side event at ACHEMA Announcements for both the joint SPIRE booth

and the brokerage event have been disseminated via the SPIRE website and the SPIRE twitter

account

74 Further events

Further events have been organized by ProPAT partners eg the ldquoSmart Sensors - mechanistic

and data driven modellingrdquo conference 1-2 October 2018 in Frankfurt (organized by DECHEMA)

or the 8th International Granulation Workshop 28 June 2017 in SheffieldUK (organized by

University of Leeds These events are listed in Table 2

8 Summary and conclusions

Communication activities performed by the ProPAT consortium have addressed more than

100000 stakeholders during the course of the project A clear focus in the communication

activities has put on direct communication on ProPAT objectives goals and results at relevant

events attended by a large number of stakeholders During the course of the project ProPAT

partners participated in 35 events and organized 10 27 lectures and 12 posters have been

presented and 4 exhibitions have been used to demonstrate and display prototypes and results

In total 17000 stakeholders have been participating at events either organized by ProPAT or

including ProPAT lectures posters or exhibition contributions

The website and social media activities have complemented the communication activities but

have been hampered and limited by the late delivery of accessible and tangible results which

have also been cleared with respect to confidentiality and IPR issues within the consortium

Hence key results of the project have not yet been disseminated and communicated to the fully

possible extend within the projectrsquos regular run-time Population of the website with the

publically available results and communication of the material via the established social media

channels still has to been completed A number of events have been fixed for presentation of

ProPAT results after the project these are reported in D107 ldquoFinal Plan for the dissemination

and exploitation of the projects resultsrdquo

The ProPAT consortium and in particular DECHEMA and IRIS in lead of the respective WP10 tasks

are committed to continue with further dissemination and communication activities on ProPAT
