Chauffeur Driven Distillery Tour of Scotland
Uisge-beatha or ‘the water of life’ is the ancient Gaelic
term for distilled alcohol. It has become a well-known
phrase in Scotland, traditionally associated with whisky.
Scotland is the home of the world’s finest and most
sought-after single malt whiskies. No visit to the greatest
small country on earth would be complete without
immersing yourself in the world of Scotch Whisky. To
add to this, the last ten years have seen an explosion
in the number of gin distilleries. With careful and
responsible planning (and drinking) over the course of
your stay in Scotland, each evening both your aperitif
and digestif can be Scottish through and through.
A keen-eyed enthusiast will, as your plane descends into
Glasgow Airport, be able to spot the long dark roofs
of the warehouses which are home to maturing barrels
of your favourite drink. With both Auchentoshan and
Glengoyne Distilleries within easy reach of Glasgow,
this makes an ideal place to begin your visit to Scotland.
Having been met by your chauffeur, who will assist
you every step of the way, you can head straight to
One Devonshire Gardens by Hotel du Vin in the leafy
west end of the city. Situated approximately 10 miles
to the west of the city, the Auchentoshan Distillery is
categorised as a Lowland Malt. In recent years this has
become a well-respected and much-loved malt, largely
because of the practice of triple distillation. This gives
the finished product a smooth and sweet character.
With the options of Island, Highland and Speyside as
your whisky destinations, which of these you choose
will be largely dependent on the time you have at
your disposal. Islay, the most famous of the islands, is
home to no less than eight distilleries and will require
at least a two-night stay as part of a chauffeur driven
tour. The Machrie provides the ideal luxurious retreat
on the island. After a visit here, you could head south to
Campbeltown, home to Springbank, before returning to
Glasgow via the Isle of Arran. This island in the Firth
of Clyde often described as ‘Scotland in miniature’.
Speyside is probably the most famous of all the areas
where whisky is produced in Scotland. With over 40
distilleries in the area, it is a magnet for whisky lovers
and you can reach it in just over 2 hours from Glasgow
or Edinburgh. The leafy hills and glens of Perthshire are
home to Kinloch House Hotel. Dating from the 1840s,
the hotel is an excellent example of a grand Scottish
country house and there can be no finer place to dine on
exquisite food and sip a fine malt by a roaring log fire.
Further to the north and right on the edge of Speyside
are the Boath House Hotel and Marcliffe Hotel &
Spa. Located to the east of Inverness, Boath House
Hotel is undoubtedly one of the best examples in
Scotland of a grade A Georgian mansion. The only
gins you can drink here are Scottish and the fine
dining experience will never disappoint. After dinner,
a bewildering but carefully chosen selection of
whiskies simply serve to whet your appetite for more
exploration of Speyside during your stay in the area.
Located on the western edge of the granite city of
Aberdeen, the Marcliffe Hotel & Spa also dates
from the 1840s. Here the Conservatory Restaurant
has a wine list of over 400 wines. To round off your
evening you can choose from over 100 malt whiskies,
all on the doorstep of the Malt Whisky Trail.
An itinerary of five to seven days will ensure you
experience the best of Scotland’s malt whisky and
gin during your chauffeur driven tour. With your
chauffeur on hand to look after your every need
and ensure that you can travel across the country
without falling foul of the law, there can be no
better way to experience Uisge-beatha. Slangevar.
