Most of the time when I write about the outdoors I am writ-ing from the perspective of be-ing a hunter or fisherman. And even though these hobbies make up most of my time outside, they do not define all of my activities. Not only do I enjoy running, but I love simply going and sitting in the woods. I actually have one particu-lar place that I affectionately call my happy place. It’s where I go to reflect, read and pray. There are actually several ways to enjoy the outdoors. I have friends who love to take their kay-ak down the river and just take in the sights. I have other friends who love to hike and camp as well as explore off the beaten path. One of the most popular hobbies is bird watching. And what about those who ride horses? And many hunt-ers I know prefer at times to take their camera instead of a weapon. All of these are ways to enjoy the outdoors differently. I am also blessed to live in an area that has both a state and na-tional park. Thousands of acres are managed in a way that not only preserves wildlife of all sorts, but also makes this property accessible

to every individual. The amazing thing about all of this outdoor treasure is that we humans had nothing to do with its creation and yet we value it more than anything that we have. Mil-lions of dollars are spent each year just to protect and care for some-thing that was here before we were. And our biggest fear is that some-how it will be destroyed either by a natural or manmade disaster. But why all of this concern? It is because it is irreplaceable. Once it is gone, it is gone for good. And what we lose is not only its use but its tonic – its unique power to heal our mind, soul, and spirit – the picture it gives about our grandi-ose universe – the message it gives about our God. That is what draws us to its places and that is why we must give it some of our time. This outdoor world reminds us of our limits. Whether it is by the power of the rapids or the peak of a mountain, we understand that our ability is limited. But these also remind us of the unlimited power of our Creator and that if He can build such magnificent structures, surely He can take care of those things in my life that weigh me

down. Nature is not a museum where we only ponder our history and ad-mire our accomplishments. It is a spiritual, psychological, and physi-cal hospital where we check our-selves into in order to find God’s healing balm for whatever ails us. I hope you are taking your medi-cine.

By C. Edward Wilson Lady Raiders have rematch against Cavaliers Savannah Christian comes into the final week of January as the state’s 10th ranked team in Class-A in this region. The team standing in the way of the Lady Red Raiders is the girls from across the county, bet-ter known as the Lady Cavaliers of Calvary Baptist Day School. In their first meeting back on Dec. 21st, Sa-vannah Christian dropped a cliff-hanger to Calvary, 42-41. The upcoming game is more important this time, because whichever team posts the best record will undoubtedly get the top seed all the way through the opening round of the Georgia High School Association’s playoffs. Boy’s basketball action

Former Savannah Christian center Josh Sparks made a quiet visit to Savannah on this past Monday as a member of the team, which gave him a scholarship last year. The 6-foot-9 player is now a member of the Jacksonville Uni-versity basketball team. Sparks didn’t get a lot of playing time in the contest in which his club de-feated Savannah State University in a close game, 62-58. More than half the fans in the stand at SSU’s Tiger Arena were followers of the Dolphins since Sparks is now a cur-rent member of the squad. Last year, he was on every-body’s all-region team and was considered a Division-1 prospect after having a spectacular season his senior year. “We’ve got to put some meat on him,” said one of the SCPS fans. “He looked a little nervous, but he’s the tallest fellow on the team.” The Grove’s boy’s team comes into the final week of January as the 12th ranked team in the state according to the Coaches Poll. The Scottish Rebels as of Tuesday post a 17-1 overall record and have

a perfect region record at 7-0. The closest team to the Rebels is Johnson, whom the Rebels have defeated twice this season. Those two teams will play each other once again on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd. just tossing Bradshaw in a river, fitted with cement boots.” Works for me...) A few months back, my friend Crystal was talking about need-ing to stock up on Eggo’s, because Kellogg’s was evidently projecting there’d be a shortage of the tasty breakfast treat. “Apparently, there is a plant here in Atlanta that produces the Eggo’s,” she said. “Flood waters (back in Sep-tember) damaged the plant and caused production to stop. At the same time, they were doing repairs at the other plant in Ten-nessee. I swear I’m not making this up. ...(Brace) yourself...Eg-go’s aren’t expected back on the shelves until mid-2010.” According to the Bloomberg news service, the “temporary supply disruption” contributed to a three percent decline in sales of the waffles. Is that nuts? I mean, it’s not like I have Eggo’s on a reg-ular basis- but that sure makes me

crave them. It’s a good thing there are three Waffle House restaurants within five minutes of the house- not to mention their corporate head-quarters... Wow- now I missed this one last week, but it seems there was quite a row at the Jets-Chargers game in San Diego a couple of weeks ago when a Jets fan was arrested by officers working off-duty at the game, apparently just for cheering his team on. In an incident captured on video and posted online, the fan can be seen cheering for his team. That’s the extent of it. He’s not using profanity, nor being vulgar in any way (unlike Red Sux and Yank-me’s fans we see at Turner Field)- just cheering. And suddenly, the video shows four officers tackling the guy, pin-ning him, and cuffing him- all the while, fans around them are boo-ing and protesting the man hadn’t done anything wrong. According to officers, the man was drunk and resisting arrest (circular logic, at best- from the video evidence)- but he says he’d

had three beers in four hours and officers refused to administer a Breathalyzer test. The officers also said they asked the man to come “upstairs” and talk to them, but the man refused and made a fist- an accusation denied not only by the suspect, but by people sitting around him. “The poor guy was just totally busted for nothing,” said one fan who was sitting nearby. Other reports say an off duty of-ficer who was attending the game as a spectator texted one of his co-workers, who was acting as secu-rity at the game, complaining that the Jets’ fan was being disruptive, even though the admittedly brief video evidence shows otherwise. What I also picked up from the video was that someone had thrown something at the Jets’ fan- meaning he was the victim of an assault in the first place. Again, the video evidence from prior to the arrest is too brief for anyone who wasn’t there to know what happened, but it appears it will be the word of the four of-ficers against the entire section of spectators who witnessed the event. And all because one guy

was mad his team was getting spanked. As for the guy at the end of the video, who got escorted out himself- well, I wouldn’t have listened to you screaming pro-fanities in my face, either. In that case, I think the officer showed remarkable restraint in not apply-ing a well placed nightstick up-side your head... HA! I just heard a commercial that quoted the song “Sixteen Tons,” saying if “you’re another day older and deeper in debt.” Now I can’t stop laughing. TV is awesome... I was at work Saturday night, and- on all of the TVs in the bar- they were showing college bas-ketball. The only way it could have been more boring to me is if it had been women’s college bas-ketball. Or any type of “extreme sport.” Anyway, as we were shutting down for the night, Jason and the cook (whose name I still don’t know) are talking about basket-ball, and Jason actually turns to me and asks me some question

about the game. I gave him that blank look he gives people who are too drunk to order a glass of water. “You know I don’t know any-thing about basketball,” I told him. He said he just wanted my opinion and I said “just over three weeks until pitchers and catchers report. Thank goodness...” I was saddened to hear about the passing of one of my high school classmates last weekend. Deadira Brown was 41, and will be missed by her family and friends... And, finally, some Happy Birth-day wishes to Jeff. My “brother” will hit the big 4-0 Wednesday... That’ll do it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from all around. And maybe even some sports, too. BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: We had a big snowstorm this week. Not wanting to scrape the ice off my windshield, the night be-fore the storm I looked around for something to put under my wipers to keep the ice off. Unable to come up with anything, I contemplated alternatives. Then it came to me: Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil! I smeared some Filippo Berio on the windshield and waited for the snow. The next morning, the snow slid off the windshield like a greasy zeppole. Great, I thought. When the snow stopped, I noticed a haze on the windshield. I fig-ured it would wash off. Well, I was wrong -- the stuff has adhered to the glass as if it were baked on. I’m still scraping off the hardened oil. Help! -- Tom

RAY: Tom, it’s people like you who make great discoveries. You’re the kind of person who is unafraid to experiment. And once in a while, you’ll hit upon something that will benefit all mankind. This was not one of those times.

TOM: No. Filippo Berio Extra Vir-gin Olive Oil has many excellent uses -- my brother uses it as a hair tonic -- but windshield cleaner is not one of them.

RAY: You’ve probably cooked with olive oil. When you’re done, you put the frying pan in the sink. And if you then let it sit and cool off for a while, you’ll find a hardened, whitish layer of congealed grease stuck to it. That’s what’s on your windshield.

TOM: If you had done this dur-ing one of those midsummer snowstorms, Tom, it might have worked. But the cold temperature is what congealed the oil and did you in.

RAY: So, how do you get it off? Well, with a frying pan, you can use steel wool -- not a good option for your windshield. You also can use hot water and soap, and try to “un-congeal” it. This would be best done in a heated garage.

TOM: If he had a heated garage, he wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place!

RAY: Good point. How ‘bout we suggest he just drive in reverse un-til late June?

TOM: Here’s what I’d do, Tom: Run the defroster with the heat on high for a good 20 minutes before attempting to remove the grease. The warmer you can get the con-gealed oil, the easier it will be to remove.

RAY: If soap and water are not up to the task, try a 50-50 mixture of water and methanol. It’s a mild solvent that’s safe for glass, and it’s pretty good at cutting grease.

TOM: And if all else fails, there’s always the glass-cleaning tool of last resort: the hammer. Good luck, Tom.

OLIVE OIL GOOD FOR MANY THINGS, BUT NOT REPELLING SNOW

This magnificent Golden Ar-row developed an amazing 930 horsepower (more powerful than a speeding locomotive, able to leap past other racers in a single bound! Look! Up on the track! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Supercar, able to beat anything on wheels or in the air).

Though 230 mph was claimed for this vehicle’s 1929 victory, its official time was 231.446 mph, ac-complished at Daytona Beach, Fla. Sir Henry Segrave’s previous victories were in 1926, at South-port, England (152.326 mph), and in 1927, at Daytona Beach (203.792 mph), both in a Sunbeam racer.

Segrave’s 1929 record was bro-ken in 1931 at Daytona Beach by Sir Malcolm Campbell, with a Napier-powered Campbell Special, going 246.09 mph. Later, at the Bonnev-ille Salt Flats, Campbell continued to set records in 1932 and 1933, and two consecutive records in 1935 at Bonneville in his powerful and world-famous Bluebird spe-cial: 276.82 mph and then a whop-ping 301.13 mph.

In later years, new records were set, and in 1965 Craig Breed-love and his “Spirit of America” car hit the 600 mph mark (600.841, to be exact).

This was a far cry from the French speed record in 1898, which was only 39.3 mph, merely the speed of a racehorse. The first car to go 100 mph or more was in Belgium in 1904 (103.56 mph). The famous Barney Oldfield won an early-career victory in 1910, at Day-tona Beach, pushing a Benz racer to 131.724 mph.

In 1929, the average family car’s top speed was 55-65 mph, though a few big cars would do 70 or 75, and Chrysler’s big Imperial 80 of 1926-1930 would do a guar-anteed 80 mph with its big six-cylinder engine. But by the start of the 1930s, the mighty straight-eight Duesenberg would outrun most any other stock car, doing well past 100 mph.
