The Emmaus Formation Centre’s Spiritual Direction Certificate Program includes nine courses. It

normally starts with Introduction to Spiritual Formation, includes courses on The Role of Scripture

in Spiritual Formation, Spiritual Formation Traditions, Discernment, Spiritual Disciplines,

Introduction to Spiritual Direction, and concludes with the Spiritual Direction Praxis.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will serve to continue to train mature students in the art and practice of spiritual

accompaniment. The content and format provide an opportunity for an expanded knowledge and

experience of the ministry through the practice of supervised spiritual direction. Through lectures,

class discussions, spiritual exercises, supervised practice of spiritual direction, required reading, and

personal reflection, students will not only learn critical skills for the practice, but also benefit from

the hands-on supervision of their practice. In addition, the required reading provides for personal

reflection and spiritual growth and discovery. Through this experience, both students and

supervisor(s) will continue to learn about the persons, process and practice of guiding fellow pilgrims

deeper in love, faith and hope in Christ.

OBJECTIVES

When the course is completed you should have

• Understood concepts in spiritual direction, including the dynamics and process of spiritual

direction.

• Discerned one version of your own spirituality style.

• Experienced a variety of communal spiritual practices

• Related the classroom instruction and supervision to the practice of spiritual direction.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Sandra Broadus is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Tyndale Seminary (MDiv), and George

Fox Seminary (DMin, Leadership and Spiritual Formation). Sandra is a Certified Spiritual Director

and Supervisor, church retreat leader and speaker. Her desire is to companion others as they discern

God's presence and activity in their lives, whether it be in her spiritual direction and supervision

practice, her teaching and speaking, or in church retreat leading. She is a member of several

professional spiritual direction associations. Sandra is the founder and director of Emmaus

Formation Centre.

CLASS SCHEDULE

ASSIGNMENTS

1. Participate constructively in classes and group supervision.

2. Readings: Texts are to be read over the course of the course

3. Students are required to meet with a minimum of (3) directees for individual supervised spiritual

direction, meeting a minimum of once/month/directee. Total number of spiritual direction

hours required: 30hrs minimum, as recorded in the Spiritual Direction Log.

4. Students are required to submit (1) verbatim report, in addition to (3) completed Supervision

Reflection Forms, for each individual supervision session, providing a summary of learnings

about self, God, or process of spiritual direction.

5. Students are required to lead group spiritual direction in-class, as scheduled.

6. Required readings: each student will journal and report to classmates their personal experience

of each of the texts.

7. Students are required, themselves, to be in regular monthly spiritual direction.
