Our Wednesday Noon Lenten

worship gatherings began with

Ash Wednesday.

Each Wednesday we gather in our

sanctuary for this meditative

worship at noon. Our time

together will feature traditional

Lenten hymns and Holy

Communion. Following worship

we will continue with the book

discussion.

On Wednesday evening we

gather at 6:00 for a light soup

supper, with vespers worship

following at 6:30, and the book

discussion group at 7:00.

Special gatherings to be held Wednesdays

In this March 2018 photo, Pastor Jon delivers a

message during evening worship in the chapel.

Our evening worship will use the

Holden Evening Prayer liturgy with

candle lighting. The message will

be the same as the noon service.

Bring a friend to experience the

quiet inspiration of Lenten

discipline.

Building project updates Building Committee

Since the dedication of the

remodeled Room Two and new

laundry room, more work has been

performed on Luther Hall over the

past month.

A much-needed new furnace has

been installed in the building at a

significantly less cost thanks to the

work of our Building Committee

members. The former storage

Simon’s walk: a volunteer

care-giving program

Jim Lovell, Third Avenue Charitable Organization (TACO)

Being alone is one of the most devastating

facets of dying—no one desires to die alone.

Simon’s Walk is designed to build

relationships, share the burdens of dying, and

offer our time and selves. The name “Simon’s

Walk” comes from Simon of Cyrene who walks

with Jesus in the final hours of his life, helping

to carry the burden of his cross. As much as

finding a model of service in Simon, this story

also leads us to see Jesus in the face of the

homeless men and women we intend to serve.

Simon’s Walk is a team of trained and

supervised volunteers who may provide care

and companionship, emotional and/or spiritual

support, and participation in their memorial.

After a two-year hiatus, we are looking to bring

on board a new group of volunteers.

Simon’s Walk volunteers will participate in a 30

hour training class. Volunteers will work with

their client weekly, also be required to attend

supervision meetings along with a monthly

continuing education training. We ask that you

would prayerfully consider whether this might

be a volunteer opportunity for you.

Going Home is an end-of-life support program

for homeless persons who are terminally ill or

medically fragile. Going Home is designed to

meet the individual needs and wishes for the

homeless person who is at extreme risk.

Discovering God’s vision for your Life

This Lenten season we are going on a

journey to discover more fully who God

created us to be.

“Seven wonders of the Word” will challenge

us to experience the power of God’s Word

in our life and in our world. It will expand

your awareness of what God is saying and

doing. It will also encourage you to deepen

your prayer life as you relate the power of

God’s Word to your personal experience.

In addition to the daily reading time our

worship theme will come from the book as

well. Then after worship we will have a

discussion time to explore what was

particularly meaningful or challenging for us.

This time will be offered following our

Lenten worship on both Wednesday

afternoon and evening.

Books are available in the church office or

on the patio Sunday Mornings. The cost is

$10.

In this March 2018 photo, Angela Jackson assists with

lighting candles during evening worship in the chapel.

Three is in the process of being converted

into a pantry space.

Special thanks to members of the Men’s

Group for volunteering to paint the room.

This will allow us to store food items and

other supplies needed for various

ministries. The men also painted the

Pastor’s Sacristy and Vestry, which had not

been painted in nearly two decades.

A new furnace is also being installed in the

Church Office. Some window and door

upgrades are also being assessed.

The Building Committee is hard at work

assessing the proposals from contractors

for the Fellowship Hall Project.

More updates to come.

Thrivent Choice Dollars

The Thrivent Choice® program encourages

benefit members to recommend where

Thrivent Financial distributes an amount of

its charitable grant funds.

Members make this recommendation by

directing Choice Dollars to a nonprofit

charity of their choosing.

If you are a Thrivent member and have not

designated your funds for this year, please

consider Clairemont Lutheran Church. A

representative from Thrivent will be here on

March 15 to help members direct their

giving.

Volunteer Spotlight Rise & Shine Choir sings at ELCA event

“Members of the Rise & Shine Choir performed for

the ELCA National Youth Ministry Extravaganza in

Anaheim [Feb. 1]. They are inspiring other

churches around the country to start their own

special needs music ministry.”

- Katy Lundeen, Director

Tom Groot Tom comes every Tuesday to go through what

Trader Joe’s sends to get chicken & bread for

the Sandwich Ministry. If there isn't enough

bread, he buys more loaves.

He also takes care of mailing the Clarion by

organizing volunteers to fold, label, and seal the

newsletters. He then drives to the post office on

Midway to drop them off at the bulk mailing dock.

He also organizes and gets the offering envelope

boxes mailed out every December.

On Sunday morning you can find him sorting the

offering and blue slips so that Pastor Jon can

pray for everyone, and the tellers can get the

deposit done on Monday mornings.

Thank you, Tom, for being so dedicated and so

generous with your time.

Thank you from Holly Doolittle

“I cannot thank you all enough for all the

prayers, cards, flowers and everything you’ve

done to help me feel loved and cared for! They

have sustained me through this time away. I am

so grateful to have you all supporting me.

Also, I am so blessed to have my family here in

IL taking good care of me. I am doing well and

healing is happening!

I also got the lovely prayer quilt! It’s gorgeous!

Thank you to the wonderful quilters that so

lovingly stitched it for me and to all those who

tied knots and said prayers! It’s beautiful.”

Thank you all and I will see you soon!”

Interfaith Shelter follow-up

James and Heidi Acosta would like to thank all who

helped with our congregation’s rotation of the

Interfaith Shelter Network. Thanks to the donations

raised from our church, one individual was able to

be placed into permanent housing.
