Spanish projects to conquer the Japan were
hatched in Manila.
Guido de Lavezaris (in 1574) and Juan Pacheco
Maldonado (in 1575) Wrote to King Philip II
suggesting the Invation of Japan.
But there is no compliance was taken by the King
and the matter.

Philippines and threatened to invade the colony.

The first embassy to Japan
Governor Gomez Perez Dasmarias sent two ambassadors
from Manila. To bring valuable gifts to Hideyoshi.
The two ambassadors are:
Fr. Juan de Cobo was the first Spanish Missionary toreach Japan from Manila.
Capt. Lope the Llames/ Llamos
After discharging their mission in Japan both of them
sailed homeward and their vessel wrecked by the
typhoon.
After that both of them are killed by the hostile natives.

Second Embassy to Japan
Governor Perez Dasmarias sent the second Spanish
embassy to Japan.
It is composed of four Franciscan Friars and Headed
by Father Pedro Bautista (Proto Martyr of Japan).
In Subsequent years more Spanish missionaries from
Manila penetrated Japan and Propagated the
Christian religion. The number of Christian Japanese increased and
Churches sprang up in Nagasaki, Kyoto and Osaka.

Hideyoshi alarmed because of the rising tide of
Christianity in Japan and He Suspected the
Missionaries as the Vanguard of Western
Imperialism.
In October 18, 1596 A mexico-bound galleon San
Felipe from Manila was stranded off Urato, Tosa
That incident seemed to verify the fear of Hideyoshi.

The Revelation
The Imprudent pilot of San Felipe while he is in the
rocks of the coast boasted the Japanese onlookers
that the Spanish King had extensive territories all
over the world.
Masuda Nagamori (a spy of Hideyoshi) heard the
things that the Pilot boasted.
After that he make a conversation to that Pilot.

Hideyoshis Counter Plan
He Banned Christianity in Japan.
He Ordered the Arrest of all Christian Missionaries
and Christian Japanese.
On February 5, 1597 a group of twenty-six
Christian Martyrs headed by Fr. Pedro Bautista
were crucified at Nagasaki.
One of the Martyrs is the Mexicans First Saint inthe Christian Church, named Felipe De Jesus.

First Expedition
1852 Governor Ronquillo de Pealosa sent the
first expedition into Moluccas.
It Consists of:
- 1,500 Filipinos
- 800 Spaniards
Sebastian Ronquillo is the head of that expedition
and also the nephew of Gov. Roquillo.
After a fruitless campaign in Ternante, the
expedition returned in Manila.

Second Expedition
1585 Governor Santiago de Vera sent an
expedition, commanded by Captain Pedro
Sarmiento to Mollucas
The second expedition to Moluccas was also a
dismal failure.

Third Expedition
1593 The Third Expedition was prepared on that
year by Governor Gomez Perez Dasmarias, the
Builder of the Walls of Manila.
While the expedition was still of the Batangas
Coast, the Chinese rowers mutinied and killed the
governor.
Because of the Death of Governor PerezDasmarias, the expedition did not proceed to
Moluccas.

Dutch and Mollucas Affairs
Dutch, enemy of Spain appeared in Mollucas.
They traded and negotiated alliances of friendship
with the native rulers.
Sultan Zaide a Muslim Malay ruler of Ternante
and he is the one who negotiotes with the Dutches.

Fourth Expedition
Governor Acua personally led a mighty expedition
to the Mollucas consists of:
- 36 Ships
- 1,614 Filipino Warriors
- 1,428 Spaniards
- 59 Portuguese
March 26, 1606 The expedition reached
Ternante on the said date.

The Battle of Ternate
On April 1, Governor Acua with the help of the
Tidore warriors (Allies of Spain), began the attack
on Sultan Zaidess fortress in Ternate.
The Battle raged furiously for several days.
Due to heavy Casualties the valiant Sultan
evacuated the battered fortress and retreated, with
his surviving warriors to the mountains where hecarried on struggle.

The Governors Betrayal
Gov. Acua is unable to crush Sultan Zaide by force of
arms. So the Governor resorted to a dirty trick
He invited the sultan to a peace parley at his camp,
with a solemn promise that no harm would come to him.As a matter of fact, Acua gave the sultan a written
safe-conduct, signed by him and dated April 6, 1606.
Trusting the Spanish word of honor, Sultan Zaide,
accompanied by his son and several chieftains, went to
Acuas camp on April 10.
But Acua Violated the Signed Safe-Conduct, the Sultan
and his companions were seized and taken prisoners.
Thus Gov. Acua was able to Conquer Ternate.

Victory and Death
After the successful invasion of Ternate Gov. Acua
returned to Manila in triumph on May 31, 1606,
bringing spoils of war and many Ternate Prisoners
(Including Sultan Zaide). He was given a Heros
welcome.
Nearly a month after his joyous return on June 24,
1606, Acua was poisoned mysteriouly.

The Spanish Occupation and its fall to
the Moluccas
The Spanish Occupation of the Moluccas did not last long.
- After Acuas time, the Dutch threatened Spains sovereignty.
- In 1607- 1609 Tidore and Ternate Fell to the Dutch.
- In the ensuing years, Spanish authorities tried in vain tocheck the rising tide of Dutch colonization in the Moluccas.
- 1656 Attacks by the Dutch forced the Spanish Governor
of the Moluccas to transfer his headquarters to Zamboanga.
- Finally, in1662
, Governor Sabiniano Manrique de Lara
recalled all Spanish Forces from Zamboanga and the
Moluccas and concentrated them in Manila.
- This Move was made In the face of an invasion threat form
Koxinga, Chinese conqueror of Formosa.
- The Moluccas Fell into the hands of the Dutch.
