Main Idea and Vocabulary
Key Concept: Volume of a Rectangular Prism
Example 1:Volume of a Prism
Example 2:Volume of a Prism
Volume of Prisms
• I will find the volumes of rectangular prisms.
• volume
Volume of a Prism
What is the volume of a fish tank that is 4 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 6 inches tall?
One Way: Use a Model
Count the number of 1-inch cubes that will fill the bottom of the rectangular prism. The prism is 4 cubes long and 4 cubes wide. There are 16 cubes on the bottom.
One Way: Use a Model
There are 6 layers of cubes. So, there are 6 × 16 or 96 cubes.
Volume of a Prism
Another Way: Select and Use a Formula
V = wh Formula for the volume of a rectangular prism.
V = 4 × 4 × 6
= 4, w = 4, h = 6.
V = 96 Multiply.
Answer: The volume of the fish tank is 96 cubic inches.
