Atlowoutsidetemperatures,coolingisdirectwithoutsideair.Theoutsideairisconveyedintothecontainerwhentheairflapisopen.Therefore,whenoutsidetemperaturesarelow,energy-intensivecompressorcoolingisnotnecessary.
Mixed mode
Oncetheoutsidetemperatureexceedsagiventhreshold,FreeCoolingaloneisnolongersufficient.Then,inMixedmode,theruntimesofthecompressorarekepttoaminimumbythesimultaneoususeofFreeCoolingandcompressorcooling.Inthisway,dependingonthelocaltemperatureprofile,theannualenergycostscanbecutbyafurther10%.Thepartialloadmodeoftheairconditionerproducesfurtherpotentialsavings.
