St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 16457 Old Frederick Road, Mt. Airy, MD. 21771 (410-489-4411)

November 2016 Rector’s Reflection

Give Thanks for Being Episcopalian.

Do you share your faith with others? Do you share why you like St. Paul’s? Do you share why you like being an Episcopalian? Yes, I am a minister. Yes, I am an Episcopal priest, I recently told someone. When I get to talking I like to share that our church is that little white church on Old Frederick Road. I like to share that we are small and friendly, just regular people. We are all types of people - and that is one aspect of being Episcopalian that is great! We are not all “cookie cutter.” Some of us are conservative, liberal, black, white, Hispanic, Latino, Afro-Caribbean, Asian, African, rich, poor, LGBT, straight, traditional, post-modern, differently-able,

new to Christian faith, seeking spirituality, just seeking answers to this wonderfully crazy world we live in. It takes hard work to form a community that celebrates diversity and inclusion. That means we have to be deliberate when talking “with each other,” so that we are not talking “at each other.” Don’t check your brain at the door! As Episcopalians, we prefer thoughtful dialogue - listening, sharing, praying - not always the popular way to talk with those who think differently. Yet we hold to this tenaciously because it is the key to widening viewpoints and understandings. Diversity and Dialogue! Yep that’s us. “The Episcopal Church Welcomes Everyone,” because it does, just like Jesus did. We work hard on sharing also - especially food! We of course have the best pancake supper, lasagna dinner and gourmet-to-go you can find. We also like to have fun, and of course, we have the very best thrift shop. I like to share how our faith helps us to pray. We pray with the entire body. You don’t need yoga to stand, sit, kneel, genuflect (bow by bending one knee) extend your hands, bow your head, make the sign of cross - all body and hand movements - this is prayer. And we pray for ourselves and others! Our Sunday prayer list is a testament to our concern and caring for each other, and surpasses just Sunday morning!

Paint Out !!! OH Yes. Come one. Come all. Join in the Fun. Create something that is uniquely yours. Fun, friends, family, and

fellowship are a part of the deal. And it is all for a very good cause, our caring about St. Paul’s and its reach in and

beyond our community. It is a fundraiser too. It’s important

because funds raised will help support ministries that will enable us to more fully “. . . encounter Christ everywhere and engage the world.” Come and see, sip, chat, paint and re-create. Saturday, November 12, 6:00pm .

Bazaar of the Churches – St. Paul’s will participate in the Community Bazaar of the Churches, on Saturday, November 19 th – 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Lisbon Fire Hall. Please bring your baked/sweet items to the church on Friday, November 18th by 12 noon or bring to the fire hall by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Please identify your baked goods (as to what it contains – chocolate chips, kind of nut, raisins etc.) Also, it would be helpful if you would tell Linda Barnes or Joanne Honsberger what you will be donating.

Mission and Outreach UpdateChristmas/Angel Tree Gift Program: We will be sponsoring 20 children and 5 adults through the Westminster branch of the Salvation Army for Christmas this year. Keep an eye out for the tags on the Christmas tree in November! Celeste Humphreys

If you would like to help underwrite the cost of the greens and candles, which is about $80, please call the church office by Sunday, December 11th. One person or several people can help with the cost. This can be given as a memorial, in thanksgiving or as a donation.

Church Offering Envelopes – if you would like a box of weekly offering envelopes for 2017 and did not have them this year, please let our treasurer Linda Sharp know.

A Very Big Thank You is Extended to All who helped in some way to make our lasagna dinner a success. The total raised was $615. The fellowship was great and the food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their dinner – there were many favorable comments. We should feel very proud that is was a success and it was so well attended by our parishioners and the community.

St. Paul’s participated in Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” day on Tuesday, October 18th. This was very successful for St. Paul’s – we raised $185.00 selling the $5.00 tickets. Many thanks to Lee Hajek, Irene Hillen, Susan Hughes, and Etta Lee Spaulding who sold tickets at the service they attend and to Lee Hajek and Joanne Honsberger who sold tickets at the Westminister Boscov’s from 12:00 – 3:00 on Tuesday. I have heard many favorable comments regarding this money making endeavor. Hopefully, next year we can start earlier and go way over $200.00. Again, thanks to all – your help is greatly appreciated. Linda Barnes

TRRC ~ Therapeutic & Recreational Riding Center, Inc. Great news! Take a bow, golfers and sponsors and all attendees! The September 13, Queenstown Golf Tournament, in its 26th year, was one of the best ever! Great golf, great weather, sumptuous food, great prizes galore. We had two exceptional speakers: Christine Towne, Special Olympics State TRRC Team member with numerous accomplishments and

Ben Stevick, Gold and Silver Medalist, World Games. Rocking music by “Don’t Look Down Band”, Charles Samuel and John McGough on guitar and Ben Stevick on accordion. Chairman, Ken Varney has been orchestrating this effort year after year with a cumulative total of $780,000 over 26 years. Wow, what a day! A gift shirt, hat and golf book (created by Dr. Sherri Braxton-Lieber) were provided for each participant.

Twenty-six years is a long time to be partners with the power of two (John + Helen). This year the Stephanie Albright Foundation supporters and our Founding Sponsor, the Bob Porter Company joined together to maximize the impact of this event. All these golfers have built the buildings so the TRRC staff can deliver the services so desperately needed to the families it serves. Who is responsible for this Center’s success? All of you!

Thank you for believing in the work we do and for giving the children and adults in our care hopeful futures full of possibilities with much potential and brimming with success and helping them grow.

The music event at TRRC to raise the roof on a new, indoor sensory-sensitive therapy arena was OVER THE MOON SUCCESSFUL… to accommodate the growing need of children with autism, sensory integration challenges, and anxiety disorders. The arena will provide specialized props to assist the various therapy disciplines to serve this population of citizens in our community. A huge thank you to St. Paul’s parishioners, who participated in various ways, through attendance, especially Rev. Susan Keller and Anthony Edwards, assisting in the live and silent auction, especially Joanne Honsberger, and Dick Wilcher for providing the COFFEE BAR by Furnace Hills Coffee. Remember, it is the number of parishioners in the community not the number in the pews! It is all about community impact.

One of the beautiful things about the Thanksgiving holiday is that it gives us a specific time to reflect on the wonderful blessings we all enjoy. While we may not have as many things as other people have, we can all be thankful for friends and family who love us and the life God has given us.

Help Me Thanksgiving Day Prayer

O God, when I have food,help me to remember the hungry;

When I have work,help me to remember the jobless;

When I have a home,help me to remember those who have no home at all;

When I am without pain,help me to remember those who suffer,

And remembering,help me to destroy my complacency;

bestir my compassion,and be concerned enough to help;

By word and deed,those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Amen.

Hoping this Thanksgiving finds youwith plenty of reasons to give thanks!
