1st Place Samantha A.Marketing is everything when planning an event! Where does Crooms AoIT recruit for this service? Hiring for marketing service is very costly. Why go outside of our school when we are very fortunate to have talented students who have earned industry certifications? We felt that we could use TechFest to also showcase their talent so we created the TechFest Poster Contest.

Digital Design students from Crooms AoIT created their own individual TechFest posters for this year’s poster contest. Certain guidelines needed to be followed. For example, the Crooms Academy logo and the SCPS logo had to be placed on the poster along with the slogan “The Future of IT, The Students of Tomorrow.” The winner of the poster contest, Samantha A. is honored by having her personal design as the cover of this year’s TechFest program. Samantha receives a $75 gift certificate and an invitation to the sponsors’ luncheon to be recognized for her work.

Thank you Concentrix for the printing of this program. Thank you Chianti’s Ristorante Italiano

for the luncheon.

LANfest Makes Way for CroomsConCroomsCon (formerly Crooms LANfest) is the annual, 13 hour char-ity gaming festival for 8th through 12th grade students at Crooms Academy. During this one day event, Crooms Academy is trans-formed into a video gaming convention hall. There are classrooms filled with Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo consoles, over 230 PC game stations, as well as thousands of dollars in door prizes, raffles, and tournament prizes, two virtual reality rooms, Retro Room, Dancing Room, Party Game Room, Rock Band on stage, and a Cosplay Contest! Over the past eight years, CroomsCon guests have raised and donated over $33,000 to Charity! This year, CroomsCon has teamed up with amazing sponsors such as NKI Systems, EA Playtesting, Garden of Life, and the Microsoft Store to make the event bigger and better than ever!

CroomsCon is always in need of more people to loan their gaming equipment as well as more chaperones to help the event run smoothly. Please check out our web site at www.CroomsCon.org or email Clayton Donnan ([email protected]) for more detailed information about this fantastic and unique event and our philanthropic history!

IT Girls - Females in STEMThe IT Girls is Crooms AOIT’s premier community of fearless women. Monthly, the IT Girls come together to hear female indus-try leaders in technology speak on their fields, ask questions, receive advice, and become more knowledgeable about future career paths. Additionally, the IT Girls meet to have open forums, discussing issues that matter to young women at Crooms AOIT. Previous topics include qualms about being a female participant in a growing IT field, testimonial of experiencing high school through a female-minority lens, and the struggle to sometimes find a community. IT Girls also highlight opportunities for young women at Crooms including events, workshops, and internships.

Business Professionals of America

The Crooms chapter of Business Professionals of America (BPA) has always consisted of the best and brightest the school has to offer. This school year, membership in the organization doubled and was more diverse than ever. We had great success at both the Regional and State level competition with students advancing in competi-tions from Java Programming and Web Design to Interview Skills and Extemporaneous Speech. We are proud of the time, dedication and hard work our members have put into their competitions. As we prepare for the National Conference in Anaheim, California we will be fundraising and fine-tuning our presentations in hopes of the same success on the national level that we had at the state level. We are always looking for business professionals to serve as mentors for our students to help prepare them for maximum success! We thank Dr. Hanshaw, the BAC, parents, and teachers for their continuing support for BPA!

Science FairSeminole County Public Schools Regional Science, Math & Engineering Fair 2019 was held February 19th at the Seminole Towne Center Mall. The goal of the fair was to select the best projects to potentially advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Science fairs like these provide opportunities for young inquis-itive minds to highlight their projects, present their research and share their findings with the community. Judges at fair review, critique and potentially honor their work. There were 18 students whose projects were selected to represent Crooms AOIT at the regional fair and six projects placed.

Human trafficking is very much a real world problem happen-ing all around us, and the predators aren’t always as obvious as the villains depicted in thrillers like “Taken”. Can Maps Do More Than Just Show Places?Lakshmi Sankaran

Central Florida GIS WorkshopMaps are everywhere – from textbooks to cell phones to TV. Maps have evolved from just showing places, streets and population on paper maps to complex digital interactive maps consuming data on the fly – have you seen the election maps on TV as polling results come in?

Behind such complex maps are databases, connections and coding scripts. Let us use your school’s ArcGIS Online account to create a visually pleasing interactive map with some spatial analysis. Psychology of TechnologyLori Huertas & Nestor Canales

Polytechnic UniversityThe Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an introspective self-report questionnaire with the purpose of indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world around them and make decisions. Results can be relevant to the STEM field and determiner technological inclinations. The MBTI was constructed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. It is based on the conceptual theory proposed by Carl Jung, who had spec-ulated that humans experience the world using four principal psychological functions – sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking – and that one of these four functions is dominant for a person most of the time. The MBTI was constructed for normal populations and emphasizes the value of naturally occurring differences. “The underlying assumption of the MBTI is that we all have specific preferences in the way we construe our experiences, and these preferences underlie our interests, needs, values, and motivation.”

Designation by NAF (National Academy Foundation) as a Distinguished Academy for the 9th year in a row. Just 55 schools in the United States earned this honor last year.

Selection by the Magnet Schools of America as a 2018 Merit School of Excellence, MSA’s highest and most prestigious recognition.

Award-winning performance in STEM-related competitions, including Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics, and Enrichment (SECME), Business Professionals of America (BPA), and regional and state science fairs.

Even more important than all of these accolades, I am very proud of the school’s commitment to a world-class education for all of its students. In 2018, Crooms AOIT achieved a 100% graduation rate. Performance at this level requires hercu-lean efforts by the faculty, staff, and community to ensure that students have the support they need to meet the high stan¬dards for graduation from Crooms AOIT.

One of the premier benefits of attending Crooms AOIT is the opportunity to complete high school with one or more nationally recognized industry certifications. In 2017-18,

Crooms AOIT students earned professional credentials in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Flash, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and InDesign, Cisco Certified Network Associate, CompTIA A+, and Microsoft Technology Associate--Windows Operating System Fundamentals. All of these credentials serve as evidence of the advanced skills that graduates of Crooms AOIT take with them to college and the workplace.

Crooms AOIT and Seminole State College continue to main-tain a strong partnership, providing dual enrollment (college credit) opportunities beginning as early as the 9th grade. This year marks the fourth cohort of Crooms AOIT students completing their Associate in Arts degree from Seminole State College while still in high school. This program saves families thousands of dollars in tuition and fees. In addition to dual enrollment, Crooms AOIT continues to offer a rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) Program that provides students with the opportunity to take college level courses and earn college credit through the College Board AP Testing Program.

Crooms AOIT is also a recognized leader in providing students with mentors from the business community and internships with local employers. These work experiences give students the opportunity to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to challenging situations in the world of work. These oppor-tunities are made possible by the strong Business Advisory Council that supports the school and by the dedicated and focused work of Principal, Dr. Brandon Hanshaw.

I sincerely appreciate your commitment to TechFest XIII, which has become a great tradition at this school. Seminole County Public Schools values your partnership with Crooms AOIT; by sharing your time and expertise, you are ensur-ing the growth of a strong talent pipeline in our vibrant community.

Dr. Brandon Hanshaw, PrincipalI would like to personally welcome members of the Crooms Academy of Information Technology Business Advisory Council, Central Florida leaders in business and industry, representatives from post-secondary institutions, commu-nity members, and Crooms AOIT Alumni to our annual TechFest Event.

Talent in computer science and information technology continues to be in high demand and the technology curricu-lum at Crooms Academy of Information Technology enables students to specialize in networking, programming, gaming, modeling and simulation, computer repair, digital media, and cyber security to address these industry needs.

Crooms Academy of Information Technology continues to deliver a high quality education for our students which includes a strong core academic curriculum and mastery learning in a range of information technology program strands. The TechFest student conference is a critical element of our program as the event directly connects our students to business professionals and higher learning institutions which strengthens the workforce readiness pipeline and the part-nership between industry and education.

Your investment in Tech Fest is an investment in our students. I would like to thank you for your partnership and continued support of Crooms Academy of Information Technology.

Thank You
