PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMORS: HOW YOU CAN HELPNo parent should have to hear the words, “your child has a brain tumor.”

• More than 4,000 children (11 children each day) are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year.

• Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children under 10 years old.

• Brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer-related death in all children under 20 years old.

• The average five-year survival rate for all children with a malignant brain tumor is 66%, but for more aggressive tumors (high-grade gliomas), chances of long-term survival are less than 20%.

THE NEED FOR FUNDINGFunding for pediatric brain tumor research is critical because treatments developed for adults may not be effective or appropriate for children.

• Over the past 40 years, only 4 new drugs have been developed to treat brain tumors, none of which were developed specifically for children.

• 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget supports pediatric cancer research and 8% of that amount supports pediatric brain tumor research.

• 1% of the American Cancer Society’s public revenues support pediatric cancer research.

• 100% of funds raised through Bella Notte will support children.

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF THE BELLA NOTTE EVENT?Bella Notte is a special fundraising event to support critical pediatric brain tumor research. Proceeds from the 2015 Bella Notte event will help fund a clinical trial to develop personalized therapies for pediatric high-grade glioma patients. The multi-center trial will utilize molecular profiling of the tumor to identify targeted drugs that may be more effective for the patient. This effort is part of Project Impact, the National Brain Tumor Society’s new initiative to address the barriers that are slowing drug development for pediatric brain tumors. Together, we have a real opportunity to make a difference for children with a devastating diagnosis.

ABOUT THE BRAIN TUMOR INSTITUTE AT CHILDREN’S NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEMChildren’s National Health System has provided hope to sick children and their families–regionally, nationally, and internationally–for 140 years. Led by Roger J. Packer, MD, the Brain Tumor Institute at Children’s National seeks to care for and cure children diagnosed with brain tumors by integrating research into the clinical care mission.

Our research program is focused on:

• identifying molecular targets for alternatives to chemotherapy.

• identifying cellular targets and creating medical treatments specific to each individual child’s tumor.

• seeking to understand and mitigate the side effects of brain tumor treatments, therefore ensuring that children not only survive, but are able to thrive.

The Brain Tumor Institute evaluates one out of every ten children in the United States with a brain tumor, and many of the pediatric brain tumor therapies used around the world today were pioneered by Children’s National.

ABOUT NATIONAL BRAIN TUMOR SOCIETYAt the National Brain Tumor Society, we are fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and those who will be diagnosed tomorrow. This means effecting change in the system at all levels. Our strategic initiatives and funded programs aim to improve an understanding of brain tumors to transform research findings into new and more effective treatments as quickly as possible. To achieve these goals, we foster collaboration and change within all facets of the drug discovery and development landscape and invest wisely in key initiatives poised to deliver results.

Project Impact is our new, multi-faceted initiative to address the key interrelated barriers that are slowing drug development for pediatric brain tumors, specifically high-grade gliomas. Project Impact will combine efforts in funded research and public policy to confront inefficiencies that currently exist in both the pediatric brain tumor pre-clinical research system and pediatric cancer clinical trial environment. Together, these efforts will seek to optimize the entire pediatric brain cancer drug discovery and development pipeline and create significant advances in treatment options for children with brain tumors.

Our shared vision is to allow every child with brain cancer the chance to receive the very best possible therapy, and to survive their brain tumors without devastating long-term

side-effects from their treatments.
