THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA AND GLOBAL HEALTH

The Uof M has been a leader in global health for several decades, contributing to landmark discoveries and innovations that have improved public health programs, including strategies to prevent HIV, the development of the Ebola virus vaccine and innovations in maternal, newborn and child health programs. These discoveries and innovations have transformed national public health programs in many countries, and shaped global health strategies at an international scale. Examples include:

• Peer-led HIV prevention programs for sex workers and other vulnerable key populations, which have led to national and global strategies and guidelines;

• The development of innovative rural health worker programs for HIV and maternal and child health, which have been nationalized in India and now adopted in other countries in Asia and Africa;

• Male circumcision to prevent HIV, which has now become a cornerstone of HIV prevention programs in high-burden countries in Africa;

• Nurse mentoring programs for maternal and newborn health, which are now being scaled up across India by the Government of India.

The U of M has established a unique network of global partnerships with national programs (e.g. India, Pakistan, Kenya, Nigeria, Ukraine), leading global health organizations (e.g., World Health Organization, World Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and diverse academic institutions and civil society organizations. With permanent offices in India (several offices), Kenya, Pakistan and Nigeria, and currently more than 1400 faculty, technical and project staff deployed, the U of M has projects serving catchment areas with a total population over 700 million. Over the past decade, the U of M has received global funding in excess of $250 million (more than $200 million in India alone), with more than 95 per cent from international funding sources. The U of M has recently assumed the directorship of the global initiative: Countdown to 2030 – Women, Newborn & Child Survival.

THE GAIRDNER FOUNDATION

The Gairdner Foundation was established in 1957 with the main goal of recognizing and rewarding international excellence in fundamental research that impacts human health. Seven awards are given annually, among them the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, specifically for impact on global health issues.

In all categories, 373 awards have been bestowed on laureates from 30 countries and of those awardees, 87 have gone on to receive Nobel Prizes.

The Gairdner Foundation also engages in outreach programs across Canada and acts as a convener with the public, policymakers and other stakeholders on the impact of science on our everyday lives.
