St.Mildred’sWomenAdvancingTechnology,alsoknownas“SWAT”,isanallgirlsroboticsteamfromSt.Mildred’s-LightbournSchool(SMLS)inOakville,Ontario.Dressed inoursignaturekilts,wehavebeenactively involved inFIRST for fifteenyears. Our “rookie” season was in 2002. Our team is comprised of girls who arepassionateaboutengineeringandrobotics,aswellastheadvancementofwomeninSTEM(science,technology,engineeringandmath).Ourteamcontinuestocompeteand work hard to set an example for other youngwomen.

SWAT has beenmaking great strides in theprogramandhasqualifiedforworldchampionshipsfor the past 6 years. In just the past two yearswewereawardedwiththeChairman’sawardthrice,aswell as three Dean’s List awards, and a WoodieFlowers Award, some of the most prestigiousawardsofferedwithin theFIRSTProgram. In2015,SWATcompletedourmostsuccessfulseason.AttheGreater Toronto Central Region, we won the Kleiner Perkins Caufield &ByersEntrepreneurship Award and the Regional Engineering Inspiration Award.OneofourCaptains,EmilyAmbrosie,wasalsonamedaDean’sListFinalist.AttheWindsor-EssexGreatLakesRegional,SWATwontheprestigiousChairman’sAward,qualifyingtheteamforchampionshipsatSt.Louis.Tocompleteour2015seasonwewere awarded the Engineering Inspiration Award at World championshipsbecomingthefirstall-girlsandCanadiantoachievethisrecognitionatFIRSTWorldchampionships. With this achievement we prequalified for FIRST 2016 WorldChampionships.ThispastseasonwewontwoEntrepreneurshipAwardsatbothourregionalcompetitions,andSWAT’sveryownVickyWangwasnamedaDean’sListFinalist.

OutreachisabigpartofFIRST’sethosandcultureinwhichwetakeprideinadopting.Youcanoftenfindusshowcasingourrobottothecommunityduringouroff season or spreading theword of FIRST internationally. For the past 13 years,SWATgirls have embodied the visionspresentedbyFIRSTbyproudly embracingtheroleofa‘GirlWithWrench’.GirlsWithWrenchessharetheirpassionforSTEMintheirschool,local,andglobalcommunities.SWAT’smainfocushasbeentoreachouttovariouswomenandminoritygroupsthatwouldn’totherwisebeexposedtoSTEM. SWAT achieved this goal by visiting numerous schools such as E.C. DrurySchoolFortheDeaf,W.RossMcDonaldSchoolFortheBlind,andTrilliumSchoolForLearningDisabilities.

TofurtherspreadthemessageofFIRST,SWAThasalso participated in many festivals in the GreaterTorontoArea.Someoftheseeventsinclude:BigonBloor,OakvilleJazzFestival,PortCreditBuskerfest,Robots Rule Weekend and Midnight Madness.SWAT has also worked with numerous children’scamps, including Canadian Association for Girls inScience, SAGA Camp, and SMiLeS Camp. The Girlswith Wrenches also work closely with FIRSTCanada to strengthen the presence of all FIRSTprogramsintheircommunity,includingFLLJunior,

FLL, andFRCandplacea large focusand importanceonencouraginggirls fromayoungagetojoinFIRSTbasedactivities.Wehavewitnessedtheeffectsofourteamininspiringgirlsinengineeringfirsthandas100%ofour2014and2015graduatingteammemberspursuedfurthereducationinSTEMbasedfieldsatuniversitiessuchasCaliforniaInstituteofTechnology,ImperialCollegeofLondon,TheUniversityofWaterlooandCornellUniversity.

SWATreachesouttoschoolsglobally,inordertoeventuallyestablishFIRSTteamswiththem.SWATgirlshave brought their passion for STEM on exchanges invariouscountriessuchasAustralia,Colombia,Scotland,Chile,Sweden,andChina.OnaverageeachbuildseasonSWAThosts3 to5exchangestudents,whoareable togetinvolvedforthedurationoftheirstay.Asaresultofhaving built lasting connections with schools aroundthe world, this season SWAT has been successful instartingFRC team5449 inBeijing,China. In total, SWAThasbeenable toconnectwithpeople from28countries in6continents.SWATgirlshavetrulybeenabletospreadtheirpassionfarbeyondthebordersofCanada.

For Inspiration and Recognition ofScience and Technology (FIRST) is a non-profitorganization that promotes science andtechnologybyrunningroboticsprograms.FIRSThas programs for each stage of schooldevelopment.FIRST promotes studentsworkingside by side with real life engineers andscientists. FIRSTdoesn’t only teach you how tobuild robots, but rather prepares you for lifeafterhighschoolandbeyond.

Manypeoplehavepreconceivednotions;influencedbymediumslikeTVand

movies,many think thathighschool robotics isa “robotwars”competition.FIRSTrobotsarebuilttoaccomplishtasksinagamethatsimulatesreallifesituations.Theterm“graciousprofessionalism”shapesmuchofwhatthecompetitionsarelikeandisthephilosophicalcoreofFIRST.

FIRST is all about inspiring students of all ages with science. Every year,around theworld, thousands of lives are changed because of FIRST. Many youngadults are realizing their potential because of FIRST. FIRST has four programstargeted at different age groups among them is the FIRST Robotics Competition(FRC)program.Mission Statement: "To transform our culture by creating a world wherescience and technology are celebrated andwhere young people dream ofbecomingscienceandtechnologyheroes."-DeanKamen,Founder

FRC:TheFIRSTRoboticsCompetition(FRC)is a high-school age aimed program offered byFIRST. Students in a team build and program aunique robot, in a high-intensity six-week buildperiod,toplaya‘game’.Therobotsarebuiltwithacommonsetofkitpartsandweighup to120 lbs.andupto6ft.tall.

Sponsoring out team is ultimately encouraging women in science. It costsapproximately $80 000 to run our FIRST robotics team.Without sponsors it isnearly impossible to run a team. StMildred’s-Lightbourn School does not have ashop tomachinenecessaryparts forour robot,whichmeans thatweneed topaymany additional charges to have custom parts made.We are not given a budgetfromourschoolandmustgetallourfundsfromsponsors.

Depending on which level ofsponsorship your donation meets (seeSponsorship Overview page) you willreceive varying amounts of mediaexposure.

All teams, including mentors,parents,andteachers,onlineviewers,andspectators will be exposed to yourcompany name and/ or logo.Approximately 2000 people attend theGreater Toronto Regional event and 35000attheSt.LouisChampionships(theseevents are also popular web casts).
