About Yaa Devi
Artistic Director, Devika Rao along with her team of international dancers Manuela Benini, Ulrika Anoukha Larsen and Edith bring to you the vibrancy of
5 dance styles, (Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi,
Odissi and Yakshagana), stories from 4 countries, Yemanja - The sea goddess from Brazil,
Kumari - The living goddess from Nepal,
Diana - The Roman goddess of Moon and
Durga - The warrior goddess from India
About Yaa Devi:
Description
Yakshagana: Led by Devika Rao and supported by her team, this opening act is set to the enchanting hymns praising the elephant headed lord Ganesh, protecting his devotees by warding off their obstacles.

Odissi: The enchanting odissi solo performed by Ulrika Anoukha Larsen is a Chayanat Pallavi, the concept and choreography of which has been developed my Madhvi Mudgal.

Kathak: The Kathak performance by Manuela Benini includes precise footwork, rapid turns, complex rhythms, intricate gesture and playful improvisation between dancer and musicians, building to a heart pounding rhythmic crescendo.

Kuchipudi/Bharathanatyam: The final act within the solo section will see Devika Rao taking the centre stage to pay obeisance to Sun, the primordial energy source. Crisp jaatis juxtaposed with resplendent abhinaya warms the stage to appreciate the vibrant moods of this eternal star. Concept and choreography by Devika Rao.

Devika Rao • British Citizen of Indian origin. • By profession a classical Indian Dance &
Theatre Artist, • Have performed more than 1200 times
in the last 2 decades, a lead performer as part of the cultural Olympic 2012 project (MANDALA) and also • Performed for Queen’s Baton Relay
2009 (INITIUM). Teaching Bharatanatyam to a number of students ages ranging from 4yrs to 26yrs. • Performed solo and group pieces
including Sri Vignesh and Siva Archana

Devika Dance Theatre is a UK based dance academy that has
over 10 years of experience in theatre and non-theatre venues around the world. The company offers a range of mid- scale theatre repertoire that can be programmed within a mixed-bill of our own work or with other artists, as well as site-specific work.
