Keynote Title: How to engage the learner? New developments in educational psychology

Educational psychology has traditionally based on pragmatic philosophy, emphasizing interventions and betterment of education. How can we support our students' learning and well-being? Our recent research on university students has focused on student-activating learning methods, study engagement, academic emotions, and motivation. It is a worldwide concern that the young generation of students appears to be alienated by traditional approaches to higher education. These so called "digital natives" do not remember the time before Internet and mobile devices. Case-, problem-, project- and game-based learning have been suggested. Simultaneously, "digital natives" still have the same basic needs for autonomy, efficacy and relatedness as previous generations. In addition, their agency and need to contribute for the society has become a central issue. My presentation summarizes our recent studies on university student learning and the role of emotion and motivation in learning. During this keynote, I shall present the theoretical model of Engaging Learning Environments, developed to combine the mental, social, physical and virtual spaces of learning.I shall also present empirical evidence on the factors that engage the learners, including both large-scale quantitative studies in various domains, as well as more contextual and qualitative studies that open up the perspective of the learner.

Keynote Title: Self-Regulation in Children and Minors in Institutional Care

The lecture deals with self-regulation in children and minors living in so-called "total institutions". It aims at a scientific study of the determinants and conditions of the process of developing self-regulation. The lecture is based on the assumption that the organizations originally established by the society to correct risk behaviour in children and minors now rather contribute to the preservation and reproduction of such behaviour. A scientific research in the process of self-regulation in institutionalized children and young people will answer the question of the meaning and purpose of such institutional care which is historically rooted and preferred in the Czech Republic, rather than supporting rehabilitation of families in their natural social environment. Self-regulation can be considered as one of the fundamental human abilities. It is based on conscious control of volitionary behaviour focused on achieving goals with a desired change in behaviour as one of the possible goals. The degree of self-regulation is significantly affected by the social environment we live in.
