media, as well as in artisticpractices.
As one of only two NorthAmerica comedians selected tospeak and perform at all threeconferences, Clinton lectured oncross-dressing and gender bending

THE MAGICAL MINUTES
Where did the Summergo?! Now, Halloween isjust around the corner, andas magicians our lives willall get busier (we hope!)Come out to the next two
meetings as we compete for the new “BestHalloween” effect and have a costume contest onthe Auction Night!
Fist off, I want to thank David Wilson (yesagain) for his spectacular work on the 2006Roster Book. It is a thing of beauty. Yes, I knowthey were delivered over halfway through theyear, but they are tedious to produce and take alot of time and work. We have devised a newprocedure to fix some of the time delays, such aspublishing two years worth of events in eachbook...but the number one reason the books arealways delayed is due to late membershippayments. YOU can help by paying the dues ontime, or better yet purchase a 3-Year membershipand save yourself some money. Let’s see if wecan have the 2007 book out by March/April!
I have been contacted by IBM Headquartersabout a few members who have not renewedtheir IBM memberships. This is a friendly
reminder that you must be a member of the IBMin order to maintain your membership with theVancouver Magic Circle. I think the LinkingRing magazine is worth the price of membershipalone with the IBM, but you can renew withoutthe magazine and pay as little as $20 a year. Please visit www.magician.org to renew now!
My latest fundraiser is a personal one, but Iwould love for the club and its members to beinvolved if they choose. I am going to raisesome funds for “Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth”, as October is the designated month forthis. I will be donating 20% of my magic showfees from the month of October towards thisimportant cause, and I hope to raise $500. I hopeto get some press on this and will be handing outspecial “Pink Wands” at my shows. I invite anyother members out their who wish to join me inthis endeavor, to contact me at
Last note – wehave had to cancel our participation in the“Balloons Around the World Event”. We did nothave enough members who wanted to commitand the date falls on the same day as the ‘Day OMagic’ in Washington so the attendance wasgoing to be even less. We will plan well aheadfor next year though! See you at the meetings!

On Friday, September 15, 2006, 39Ring 96 members and 8 of their guestswelcomed the start of our Fall lectureseries by attending the Chris Capehartlecture at Douglas College. ThisPhiladelphia native has been performingmagic for 35 years. He started his careeron the streets of New York City (44thand Broadway to be exact) with one trick– a thumb tip and red silk. He has comealong way since then, and has performedall over the globe entertaining peoplewith his street magic.
This wasn’t the typical lecture that weare used to where the lecturer showsseveral tricks and how to perform them.Instead, Chris showed us exactly whatstreet magic is, and how to make moneyusing magic. He told that there is nopoint in your routine going over 12minutes as you will not make anyadditional money, and this also allowsyou to turn over your audience 4 timesevery hour. It is quite simple, you gather
a crowd, work the crowd, and at the end, they give you money.
Chris refers to himself as a MasterMagician, and it is obvious fromwatching him that he has years ofexperience “working” the crowd, utilizing his quick wit and great sense ofhumour.
Chris showed us a few tricks withcards, coins, thumb cuffs, and linkingrings, but most of his lecture was himtelling us stories, my favourite one beinghis story about how he ended up winningthe Senator Crandall Award for Comedywith his version of Fraidy Cat Rabbit.
Chris finished off with the lecturewith his three-ring routine, which heperfected in 1981, has been acclaimed bysome of the world’s most renownedmagicians as “the best of the best.” Hemesmerized all of us by walkingthroughout the crowd while linking and
unlinking the rings right in front of ourfaces, which was amazing as most ringsroutine are commonly performed at adistance.
Our illustrious President, MikeNorden, presented Chris with thecoveted IBM Ring 92 pen (OOOOHH),a lovely garment bag (AAAAHHH), anda lovely treat of Maple Leaf Cookies(YUMMMMM).
The lucky winner of the cost of theiradmission as they booked in advancewas Henry Tom. Be sure to book aheadfor the next lecture so that you may havean opportunity to get your name listedhere (and pocket twenty bucks).

Another proof that magicians aremulti-talented performers comes fromRick Mearns, who was recently spottedin the recording studio, adding drumsand percussion tracks for IBM Ring #92member Tony Kazoleas’s (aka ZanyZack) upcoming children's CD.
Rick has been a studio musician forover 20 years, recording across NorthAmerica, from Vancouver’s
all the way to Nashville. Thoseof you that are new to the Vancouver
Magic Circle may not know that beforeRick became a full-time Close-upMagician he was a Nashville recordingartist, and spent more that 15 years on-the-road performing music... not magic!
MushroomRecords
Tony on the other hand is the exactopposite... we all know him as amagician, but he’s been on-the-road allsummer touring his music act! Look formore information about Tony’s CDrelease in October’s newsletter.
