Our degrees are accredited by industry regulatory bodies including The Society of Sports Therapists, The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, and The British Psychological Society.

Our specialist laboratories include Biomechanics, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Therapy, Sports Psychology, and Sports and Exercise Physiology.

Some of our degrees are available with a foundation year for students who do not meet our direct entry requirements for degree level study.

KEY FACTS

We offer Sport and Exercise degrees at postgraduate level and a PGCE in Secondary PE should you wish to continue your studies or train to teach.

FACILITIES

SPECIALIST LABSOur Exercise Physiology and Human Performance labs, Body Composition lab and Bodily Fluids lab are suitable for conducting a range of physiological and nutrition-based exercise tests for health and sports performance - part of our Peak Condition Service.

SPORTS THERAPY CLINIC Our Sports Therapy Clinic enables Sports Therapy students to get hands on experience working with fee paying members of the public and athletes, under the direct supervision of a members of academic staff or a clinic supervisor. The Clinic is open to the general public and offers injury rehabilitation and sports massage.

BIOMECHANICS FACILITY Our Biomechanics Facility enables collection of data using specialised equipment to understand and diagnose musculoskeletal conditions. This unique facility helps deliver our world leading research on clinical Biomechanics and rehabilitation technologies and is used by Sport and Exercise students to collect data for many research projects.

THE ASHFORD SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY LABORATORYThe Ashford Sports Psychology Laboratory and consulting room are used for teaching, research and consultancy in the areas of sports psychology, exercise psychology and motor learning. The facilities are used to teach practical sessions using top of the range equipment to measure stress and performance.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING LABORATORYThe Strength and Conditioning Laboratory houses equipment that enables users to learn how to use strength and conditioning techniques (such as Olympic weightlifting and movement screening) to improve movement quality and sporting performance. The equipment can also be used to support the measurement of muscular strength, muscular power (Optojump, Gymaware) and muscular activity during strength and conditioning actions (EMG).

IT LABSOur IT labs give students access to specialist sport software such as Dartfish video solutions for sports performance analysis and Tacklesport teaching and coaching software.

PEAK CONDITION SERVICEUnder the supervision of BASES-accredited staff, our Sport and Exercise students deliver services such as blood tests, fitness tests and body composition analysis to aid improvement of an individual’s peak condition, regardless of fitness level or health status.

SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS SPORTS CENTRE Full of kit powered by MATRIX Fitness, our Sports Centre houses our sports hall and gym and combines technical equipment for areas such as strength and conditioning, cardiovascular and resistance training, with outside learning environments such as our 3G pitches and Astroturf. Perfect for training, coaching and recreation.

Dr Jacky Forsyth has expertise in the field of women’s exercise physiology and health, specifically bone health, osteoporosis, ovarian hormones, and exercise. Jacky’s passion is to promote, raise awareness and cultivate research on women in sport and exercise.

Alex Blackett has a PhD from the University of Lincoln and is a member of the FA Coaches Association and the International Sociology of Sport Association. He is interested in analysing sport coach learning processes and using sociological frameworks to help further explain cultural aspects which influence how coaches learn and behave.

Dr Stephanie Romano-Smith has worked at higher education institutions in both the UK and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where she was involved in teaching, research and sport psychology support. Her major research interest focuses on combined use of action observation and motor imagery improving motor performance, specifically that relating to the PETTLEP model of motor imagery.

REBECCA WARNETT

SPORTS THERAPY COURSE LEADER

Rebecca Warnett graduated from the Sports Therapy degree at Staffordshire University in July 2014. After graduation she worked with Burton Albion Ladies FC as their First Team Sports Therapist and later as the Head of Medical. She has a local Sports Therapy Clinic (Warnett Sports Therapy), is a full member of the Sports Therapy Association and her expertise includes sports massage, injury assessment and rehabilitation, and first aid associated with emergency trauma.

PE and Youth Sport Coaching course leader, Dan Dawson, has worked across the coaching sector, from grassroots to semi-professional football. Dan continues having an active role in the field as Head of County Recruitment for Port Vale FC.

Ashley Gill has over twenty years of active coaching expertise. His principal area of expertise is in the field of sports coaching within participation and performance contexts, together with the application of sports science and other multidisciplinary perspectives to further enhance performance.

HIGH PERFORMANCE ACADEMYIf you’re a talented athlete, coach or official, Staffordshire University’s High-Performance Academy will be of interest to you. Our main objective is to help enrich, develop and improve your student experience whilst studying at the university. Within the HPA, high performing sporting students can apply to any of the three yearlong, tailormade scholarship or development schemes, depending on your requirements whilst studying here at the university.

COACHING AND VOLUNTEERINGOur sports coaching and volunteering programme is open to all students with a passion for sports, giving you the chance to develop valuable skills that employers are looking for. Students can participate in coaching, officiating and umpiring, organising and planning events, and photography and filming. At the time of printing in September 2021, the courses listed in this guide represent those we intend to offer for the 2022 academic year. Very occasionally, however, we need to make changes to our courses, including their content and the way in which they are delivered. In some instances, courses can be discontinued or combined with other courses. Reasons for withdrawing courses can include insufficient student numbers and courses not receiving the necessary accreditation or approval. Changes to course information may include operational and academic reasons. If circumstances beyond our control mean we cannot provide particular educational services, all reasonable steps will be taken to minimise any disruption to those services.
