You probably wouldn’t consider cricket a seminal New Brunswick pastime, but maybe you should: games were being played in the Maritimes as early at the late 1800s, says Cricket New Brunswick President Aditya Aggarwal, and the sport is part of the area’s heritage. And while cricket might have lost some ground to other team sports in recent years, it is making a comeback. Cricket N.B. is actively working to attract new players. Aggarwal says members visited elementary schools last winter to introduce cricket to kids, and are running a program this summer aimed to teach 5- to 11- year-olds basic cricket skills. The PSO also ran pre-season practices so interested adults could learn the fundamentals before joining a team. Cricket is a technical sport with lots of rules, says Aggarwal, but that shouldn’t deter players. Rather, teams just really have to work together. And while cricket is certainly competitive, there is also less animosity between opposing teams than you might see in other popular team sports, says Aggarwal.

Nova Scotia Cricket Association (NSCA) won the third edition of Maritime 20/20 Cricket Tournament. Four teams (New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia) played a total of six games over two days in Fredericton. The tournament started with home team (Cricket New Brunswick) playing against Newfoundland. Newfoundland scored 61 runs in 16.5 overs. CNB scored the runs in 9 overs winning the game by 8 wickets. Next visitors PEI played

against Nova Scotia with Nova Scotia winning the game by 7 wickets. The last game on Saturday was played between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Hard hitting batsman Amit Joshi scored 80 quick runs which allowed Nova Scotia reach a total of 186 in 20 overs. New Brunswick began the chase well with Rich Woollin (28) but lost their way against tight bowling from Nova Scotia. In the end New Brunswick scored 119 in their allotted 20 overs losing the game by 67 runs. Sunday morning saw a delayed start due to wet ground conditions. PEI played Newfoundland scoring 92 in 13 overs. Rakesh Negi from Newfoundland took a hat-trick dismissing 3 PEI batsmen in consecutive

deliveries. Newfoundland lost the game by 40 runs. The last two games were PEI vs New Brunswick and Nova Scotia vs Newfoundland. New Brunswick won the game by 7 wickets chasing a score of 91 while Nova Scotia defeated Newfoundland by 9 wickets chasing a score of 38. With three wins from three games NSCA were crowned champions. Hari from Nova Scotia received the Player of the tournament award, while Amit Joshi (NS) and Rohan Bhandekar (NB) received the best batsman and best bowler awards respectively. With the passing of Betty MacFarlane, Athletics New Brunswick lost the ―grand lady‖ of Track and Field in our province. Betty(Elizabeth Jean) had been involved for over 40 years in Athletics at the provincial, national, and international level in officiating as well as her contribution together with her late husband Art ensured that the Leadership camps run by the Royal Canadian Legion in helping the youth develop in our province for over 30 years. In 2004 Betty was awarded the Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to sport in our province at the Sport NB annual banquet. In 2002 a local coach was asked to comment on Betty and below is their response

―As a novice coach in the very early 1980s Betty taught me much about the technique of high jump. As I rose to certified Level 3 in High Jump, I came to realize the depth of knowledge this lady had. I also quickly recognized the dedication to young people that she had, and has. No jumper in this province can ever say ―Betty MacFarlane never helped me.‖ As an official she attended, until very recently, and actively participated in every provincial competition in New Brunswick. With every athlete she took pains to give them advice on how to jump and critiqued their skills in a most positive way.‖ We can think of no better way in congratulating Betty for helping time and time again our young athletes to become all that they can be. Thank you Betty.

Thumbs Up For Funding

With the support of BC Athlete Voice Sport NB launched the ―Thumbs Up For Funding Sport in NB‖ Campaign! By taking three easy steps: #1 signing the e-card #2 sending your thumbs up for sport photos, and #3 joining the Facebook page, following us on Twitter, and word of mouth, New Brunswickers helped show that sport matters in the province. Both political parties added sport to their platform and we are excited to see what will happen next.

QUESTION: Do you think there is a connection between sport and politics?

Jessica Scott Fredericton

Jennifer Billings–Graham Radio Host 92.3 FredFM Fredericton

Shawn Crawford Saint John

What’s On Your Mind?

"There is a connection between sport and politics in New Brunswick as based on how important the current government deems sport and wellness is how much funding becomes available to this department. Hopefully our new government sees the importance of sport and wellness and incorporates innovative practices for the kids in NB."

"I think that politics and sports are both highly connected, since athletes and politicians are both highly motivated to be where they are. Discipline is another connecting quality that both sports and politics share. Great qualities for any of us who strive to be healthy!

―In my opinion there will always be a direct link between politics and sports, everything from location, to financial support, all the way down to players being selected based on their location. It's an unfortunate reality where allot of decisions are made for the wrong reasons‖.
