Sports Ambassadors

This year we have six new wonderful sports ambassadors. Over the course of the year they will play a significant role in continuing to raise the profile of school sport and PE. They will also help to ensure that school sport has a student voice.

In the past month they have all taken part in their sports ambassador conference at Beauchamp College and at Parkland, where they were tutored in the development of their leadership skills. Most of them of have now started to help out at after school sports clubs, or have begun playground leading at lunch times with the younger children. Each of them also has their own school games value to promote within school, as well as a role within the school games organising crew.

They have all written a short piece introducing themselves:

Elsie F (6HW)

Hey there my name is Elsie and I was born in Oxford and am nearly eleven. My passion for dancing first began when I was four years old when I went to see a group do a dance. I am a sports ambassador because I enjoy PE and always want to volunteer to do new sport. I am madly in love with dancing it is one of my favourite sports.

I also like encouraging people to pour their hearts into sports and give their all into everything. Always try your best and have great enthusiasm because as a team we can inspire people who never knew sports were this fun. My school games value is RESPECT! Being respectful will give everyone a good impression of you. Respect doesn’t take a lot to show and I think that if everyone tried to show respect the world would be a better place!

Eva S (6HW)

Hi my name is Eva and I represent teamwork. I love dance, netball, bench ball and running. Even though running and gymnastics are not my strong suits I love learning

and getting better. I think that teamwork is so important. If a team doesn’t listen to each other’s ideas then there is no chance of winning. I think that my P.E teachers chose me to be a sports ambassador because I will always listen to other people and

respect their ideas. I will always try to go for a challenge or goal. I will always enjoy sports and want to carry on in high school.

Ewan C (6HW)

Hi my name is Ewan, I am elven years old and my favourite sports are football and basketball. I think I was chosen to be a sports ambassador because I take part in

lots of school sports competitions, and have helped out with sports clubs. I am enjoying being a Sports Ambassador because it means I can help pupils get better at different sports and help them to enjoy PE lessons. This year I would like to

try new sports like rugby, hockey and netball. My School Games value is honesty which means you play fairly and to follow the rules.

Roman H (6HW) My name is Roman Hardy I am 10 years old and I play for a rugby team called the Leicester Lions. I think I have been chosen as a sports ambassador because when I play sport I show good teamwork. My two favourite sports are rugby and tennis. I am looking forward to helping organise sports day this year.

My school games value is self-belief. Having self-belief means believing that you can achieve something. When I play rugby I show self-belief to be able to perform scrums.

Oliver W (6LP) Hi, my name is Oliver. I love football and I support Nottingham Forest, I like to

watch them play at home whenever I can. Since the age of 8, I have played for the Nottingham Forest Academy and train 4 days a week and play matches on Saturday’s or Sunday’s. I really love P.E, in particular rounders, cricket, tennis,

athletics and obviously football! The School Games value that I will be representing this year is passion. I think that passion means when you really love something and

put everything into it- that’s how I feel about football.

Ella S (6HW)

My name is Ella and I represent the school games value of determination. I think I have been chosen to be a sports ambassador because my school games value really

matches my character. I think determination means that my head is held up high all the time and ready to face any challenge. I participate in every sport that is available and help when things go wrong. Some of the things I do in school are dance,

football, gymnastics, netball, basketball and cross country. Last year I really enjoyed going to Saffron Lane and taking part in the 800m where I came 10th, and

also being part of the relay team.

Sport Stars

In each PE lesson, we name at least 2 ‘Sports Stars in each class.

We look to reward the children if they are displaying the values

of the School Games; Teamwork, Respect, Determination,

Passion, Honesty, and Self-Belief. Names are recorded on a class

chart and children are moved up and given special stickers.

A child that receives 3 or more ‘Sports Stars’, is awarded a

certificate at the end of each term and goes into a draw to be

1 of 5 lucky winners of a £5 Sports Direct gift card!

The ‘Sports Stars’ for the Autumn Term:

Well done to all the Sports Stars!

Cross Country Unfortunately due to the poor weather we’ve only had one cross country

meeting so far this year, which took place at Coombe Park. We were

delighted that 40 children from across Key Stage 2 signed up to come

along. For many of our children this was their first time competing in such

an event and they all showed great determination and resilience to all

complete their runs. We even had quite a few children finishing in the top

10, which is brilliant considering that most races had at around 50 children competing.

We hope that you all enjoyed taking part, and fingers crossed more events are organised in

the New Year.

Football The Year 5/6 boys football league and Danone Cup got underway in September. The boys have

played two home league fixtures against Glen Hill’s A and B teams, as well as cup matches

against Launde, Langmore and Glen Hills. With quite a few Year 5’s new to the team, the boys

have been training at lunch times to develop their communication and teamwork skills, and we

think they are now starting to take this out onto the pitch.

In their first league fixture against a string Glen Hills team, the boys defended resolutely for

much of game, and despite their best efforts found themselves 3-0 down. However they

showed great determination to keep battling, and were rewarded when, Amourae PA scored a

late goal.

We recently played Glen Hills ‘B’ team as well, in what turned out to be a much closer match.

There really was nothing between the two sides and the game could quite easily have ended a

draw, however Glen Hills snatched a late winner when they scored directly from a corner kick.

In their cup matches at Wigston Academy once again there was not a lot between any of the

sides.

Having lost to narrowly to Glen Hills once again, and then to Langmore, the boys were finally

rewarded for their efforts with a win against Launde, Bradley S scoring a great team goal.

Well done to all the boys who have played so far, we have plenty more league fixtures and

hopefully some friendlies to play as well after Christmas!

Girls Outdoor Football Every year we are always really pleased with the number of girls wanting to play football at

Parkland, and this year has been no exception! More girls than ever before have either come

along to the after school club, or have represented the school in a tournament. We have had 2

outdoor tournaments so far this year, one at the Wigston Academy against other local schools,

and one at Mowmacre Primary as part of our Academy Trust.

We are so proud of the fact that in their first tournament at the Wigston Academy the girls

made it all the way to the semi-finals. A first for the Parkland girls’ football team! They

played so well together as a team, especially given that most of the girls were learning to play

in positions for the first time. Unfortunately we didn’t quite make it to the final having come

up against a very strong Glenmere side, however we were very proud nonetheless. A special

mention must go to Belle H for finishing as top goal scorer on the day!

The girls took this spirit into their next tournament a few weeks later in the DSAT

tournament at Mowmacre Primary. After a bit of a downpour earlier in the day, to say the

pitches were a bit boggy would be an understatement! However this didn’t seem to bother the

girls, and if anything it seemed to make enjoy it all the more!

Well done to all the girls who have been playing football so far this year, you have all come on

a unbelievable amount! We hope that you continue playing in the New Year!

Girls Indoor Football

Due to the popularity of girls’ football this year we were

able to enter the year 3/4 girls’ indoor football tournament

for the first time at South Wigston High School.

The competition took place over 2 evenings with the

winners of each league playing a final against each other.

Being an indoor tournament some of the rules took a little

bit of getting use to, such as not being allowed to go into

the penalty area, but the girls soon and all of the sports

staff were really got the hang of it!

On the first night, the team did so well to win both of their matches, giving them a great

chance of reaching the final. On the second night, the girls were really unlucky to

narrowly lose out to Langmore, who just pipped the girls to first place by just one point!

Nevertheless the girls had a great time, and Mr. H and Mrs. Ellis were so impressed with

how they played. Georgia H and Sophie S were both delighted to have scored, whilst

Methuli G was an amazing goalkeeper. Hopefully this is just the start of some of their

footballing careers! Well done girls!

Year 3/4 Football At the beginning of November, we hosted the year 3/4 DSAT football tournament here at

Parkland. It was great that we had 6 teams attending from 4 different schools across the

trust, as well as lots of family and friends cheering the teams on! Once again it was a very wet

and muddy morning, however this didn’t stop all of the teams playing some excellent football.

Matches were played in a great spirit and all of the sports staff were really impressed with

teamwork and sportmanship on display. Our two Parkland teams both performed really well,

especially considering that many of the players were representing the school in a tournament

like this for the first time. One of our teams even managed to finish in third place overall

which is a great achievement! Well done to everyone who took part, we’re already looking

forward to the next tournament in the New Year!

Basketball

On a very wet afternoon in October we took 3

teams to the DSAT basketball tournament at

Kibworth. The conditions didn’t stop anybody

from having a great time though! This was the

first occasion for a couple of years that

basketball has been included in the DSAT

sports calendar, and it was great to see so many children enjoying

playing the game. As well as our 3 teams there were also numerous

teams from both Kibworth and Mowmacre schools.

For the majority of the children representing their schools, this was their first experience

of playing basketball competitively against teams from others schools. All the PE staff were

really impressed with both the attacking and defending skills, the children have developed

by playing basketball, and there was some unbelievable baskets scored! Well done to

everybody who took part, hopefully we can arrange some more basketball events in the New

Year!

On 20th November, Mrs Ellis had the privilege of attending the Oadby and Wigston Community

Awards evening along with Mrs Bishop, Mrs Ward and Miss Ward. Our amazing inclusive

gymnastics team were nominated in the category of ‘Junior Team of the Year’ for all of their

hard work and achievements over the past year. Leo, Zac, Keva and Phoebe and their parents

were all there to celebrate a lovely evening of community achievements.

Unfortunately the team didn’t win, but as always demonstrated just why they are ‘our winners’.

We enjoyed hearing about all the nominees accomplishments and even got to see a professional

football freestyler perform!

This year more children than ever have been trained in playground

leadership, and are enjoying delivering a variety of activities for the

younger children at lunch time. Playground leaders are a great way of

developing the social skills of the younger children, as well as the leaders improving their

own organisational skills. A big thank you to all of the play leaders this term. Keep up the

good work!

PE KITS

Please ensure that all PE kits are taken home before the end of term. The holidays are a great

opportunity to make sure children are prepared for PE lessons on their return to school,

particularly for the cold winter months. It is really important that children have suitable

outdoor footwear, as this ensures that they are able to take part safely.

Outdoor Kit:

• WARM CLOTHING –

• Jogging bottoms or leggings

• A change of t-shirt

• Jumper, fleece, zip up hoodie

• Trainers

Indoor Kit:

• Plain green OR white t shirt/ polo top

• Black shorts

• Plimsoles OR clean indoor trainers

Crop tops, very short shorts and school shoes are not appropriate for PE kit.

We continue to supply children who represent the school in a sporting competition with a Parkland kit. Please can all kit be returned to school as soon as possible after

an event. In particular the green/gold football shirts that we wear, as well as black/blue shorts and socks, so that these can be used again next year. Thank you !

Other Information

A massive thank you to all the pupils and families that have supported PE and sport at Parkland this term. We would like to wish you all a very Merry

Christmas and a Happy New Year! Mrs Ellis, Mr Hackfath and Miss Ward
