Sport & phySical FitneSS in schoolsa Guide to SportS premium FundinG
IntroductionSchools are under increasingly more pressure to not only focus on the academic success of the children but to also have a greater impact on their physical wellbeing and are expected to guide those children to a more healthy and active lifestyle. With restrictive budgets this can seem like a daunting task but it does not need to be! The relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement has been studied in great detail and it is well established that those children who lead an active lifestyle are more likely to achieve academic success. The other benefit to schools is the increase in funding from the Sugar Tax that was introduced in 2016 and will start to benefit schools through their sports premium budgets from 2017 and a commitment has been made by the Government until 2020.
At Sovereign, we are focused on creating a stimulating play and learning environment for children of all ages and abilities.
Our pledge is to always offer a wide range of imaginative play equipment and facilities that ensure maximum play value whilst maintaining the highest level of safety.

Top tips to get school children exercising moreIn an effort to reduce the risk of developing serious illnesses later in life, experts recommend that children aged 5-18 years should be physically active for at least one hour a day. At school, there are endless opportunities to help promote increased activity for children. Chris Gaskell, National Sales Manager and Sports Science Specialist at Sovereign, shares his top tips:
Encourage children to take part in group exercise during playtime. Games like ‘Stuck in the Mud’ and ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ not only gets them active with their peers, but influences teamwork and rule adherence.
Make the most of existing play equipment to encourage vigorous, but simple bone and muscle strengthening activities such as running, jumping, climbing and swinging.
Support cognitive growth, balance and hand-eye coordination by installing adventure trail components like the ‘Tyre Step’ and ‘Shimmy Ropes’, which can also be used for football and netball training sessions and other teacher-led activities.
Allow break-time activities where children can use equipment such as tennis balls, skipping ropes and Frisbees.
Encourage concerted exercise by setting up an after-school mini boot camp that uses existing play facilities as a circuit.
Organise sponsored challenges such as an assault course or activity trail and raise money for school funds. Get parents involved for added fun!
Praise children when they are exercising and provide achievable challenges to give them the motivation to do it more often.

We often use the word ‘fitness’ as a broad definition for a collection of more specific terms. Fitness can actually be broken down into two sub categories; health-related and skill-related.
Refers to aspects that are associated with the ability to overcome the needs of the environment or a task. This is achieved through cardiovascular and cardio-respiratory endurance – the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to supply cells with enough oxygen to maintain prolonged activity or aerobic exercise; muscular strength – the ability to generate and apply force; muscular endurance – the ability to maintain a force or to repeat a forceful exertion; muscular flexibility – the achievable range of motion at a joint or group of joints; and body composition – the ratio of lean body mass to adipose tissue (fat mass) in the body.
Relates to the precision or ease that a task can be overcome and is associated with enhancing the quality of life. Agility – the ability to change the position or direction of the body or body segments; balance – the ability to maintain and regulate equilibrium; coordination – the integration of the nervous system and muscular system to output purposeful and precise movements; power – a combination of applying a force in the shortest space of time; reaction time – the time between a stimulus being detected and performing a movement in response; and speed – the ability to propel the body or segment rapidly.

Why we’re spending our Sports premium Funding with Sovereign. at the march ce primary School, energetic activities and
play, that makes children “huff and puff”, are essential
and are incorporated into the daily routine of the school.
Structured and active play builds self-esteem, provides
necessary skill development, and promotes active learning
and physical wellbeing within the whole school curriculum.
at the beginning of early years children need to move
confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space,
changing speed and direction using obstacles. By the end
of key Stage 2 they develop competence to excel in a broad
range of physical activities and lead healthy, active lives.
data from the national child measurement programme shows
that more than one in three (34.2%) children in year 6 (aged 10
to 11) were overweight or obese in 2015/16, up from 33.2% the
previous year and 31.6% in 2006/07. When it comes to obesity
alone, 9.3% of children in reception were obese in 2015/16,
up from 9.1% the year before.
Sports premium funding at the march provides many sporting
opportunities, skill development and cpd for staff. We are
now using sport premium to invest in outdoor equipment from
Sovereign that will benefit current pupils and those joining the
school in future years to develop a healthy lifestyle through
active participation games.

Exercise adherence in children is becoming a growing concern in the UK where young people are noticeably less active.
It is well known that taking part in physical activity can aid with cognitive development and lead to higher success in school. We have designed two trim trails to provide a fun and safe way for children to explore the limits of their physical fitness with the aim of encouraging them to learn new skills, develop physical abilities and ultimately become more active. We have given thought to the needs of the children from a physiological point of view to provide them with the best possible platform to increase health- and skill-related aspects of fitness which will drive them toward a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
