T rainer Jason Coyle hopes Group Two-winning backmarker Salsonic (Hinchinbrook) can return to his best in Saturday’s

Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and earn a place in another feature Randwick mile in the process.

Four-year-old Salsonic, who won the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Doomben in June, has had three runs back from a spell this preparation, making up ground from last on each occasion.

Last start, the $50,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale graduate finished fifth in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) at Rosehill on 2 December, one and a half lengths behind

potential Villiers Stakes rival Testashadow (Testa Rossa).

Coyle told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that Salsonic would appreciate the bigger Randwick circuit in the Villiers Stakes.

Peter Wells, who rode Salsonic for the first time in the Festival Stakes, will retain the ride on the gelding in the Group Two race.

Salsonic will carry 53 kilograms with the possible top weight of 59 kilograms being the stakes-winning stayer Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny), a nine-year-old trained by Joe Pride.

“He is a stronger horse this preparation and the blinkers have definitely helped him at his past couple of runs because

before that he was still on and off the bridle in the run and he has run into a couple of tracks that haven’t been to his liking,” the Warwick Farm-based trainer said.

“First up at Randwick (when tenth over 1400 metres) he struggled to get any traction on a soft surface and last start it was Peter Wells’s opinion that if we hadn’t got the rain he would have been a serious chance of running over the top of them late.

“Hopefully the forecast is right and we can stay on top of the ground for Saturday.”

Brisbane-trained geldings Crack Me Up (Mossman), who won the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) during the winter, and the Rob Heathcote-trained Hopfgarten (Mossman) are also expected to line up in the Villiers Stakes.

Hofgarten was runner-up in last Saturday’s Brisbane Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben, the same race the Liam Birchley-trained Crack Me Up ran fourth in.

Sydney-based jockey Jason Collett has been booked to ride Crack Me Up.Coyle suggested that if Salsonic ran well he could head to

Queensland for the Bernborough Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at Doomben on 30 December, while a long-range plan was attempting to make the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in the autumn at Randwick.

“The Villiers was always the main target, but the obvious option is to possibly shoot up to Brisbane for the Bernborough in a couple of a weeks and he is also racing a little bit more like a ten furlong horse this preparation,” he said.

“It just all depends on how he performs in the Villiers and if we can have him at his best and he happens to win then it is an automatic entry into the Doncaster.”

With acceptances closing today for Saturday’s Randwick meeting, bookmakers have installed the James Cummings-trained Interlocuter (Medaglia d’Oro) has the $3 favourite ahead of the Chris Waller-trained European import Mister Sea Wolf (Amadeus Wolf), who was runner-up in the Festival Stakes at his first Australian start.

He is at $6, Crack Me Up is an $8 chance, with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stablemates Cabeza De Vaca (Northern Meteor) and Dark Eyes (Snitzel) at $9 and $15 respectively.

Atone to line up at CaulfieldTrainer Robert Smerdon is aware of the task facing Atone (Reset) when he clashes with the talented Vinland (Sebring) for the second time this preparation in a Benchmark 70 (1700m) at Caulfield on Saturday. Atone came up against Vinland on his last start, a Benchmark 70 (1600m) at Sandown Hillside, with the Tony McEvoy-trained three-year-old beating him by a length and three quarters. "He came to Sandown and ran a good second to Vinland, which I thought was a big tick because in your second start in a race to perform so well at that level [was telling]," Smerdon told Racing.com. "The presence of Vinland on Saturday is a concern. He was very comprehensive in his win, if he lines up there it's hard to see them beating him but our bloke has trained on.”

Hunter weighing up options for Belwazi Trainer Jerome Hunter is unsure where to run the in-form Belwazi (Bel Esprit) with the mare nominated for a Benchmark 70 (955m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night and a handicap over 1100 metres at Caulfield on Saturday. The four-year-old mare has won four of her five starts to date including her debut at Cranbourne in April. "I'll be watching the acceptances as they come in and I will make a decision on what is the weakest race," Hunter said. "I think she'll be competitive in those races I'm thinking about from what I've seen in the nominations. Every race she wins, it's going to get harder and harder for her, so we'll see how far we can get, but I think there's plenty more wins in her."

Cavanough hoping for Randwick rainAfter scratching The Monstar (California Dane) from the Starlight Stakes (Listed, 1100m) two weeks ago due to the dry conditions, trainer Brett Cavanough is facing a similar problem ahead of the gelding’s defence of his Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) crown at Randwick on Saturday. "I see there's a few millimetres forecast, we'll keep and eye on the weather and with Randwick being a bit close to the coast it might be more forgiving than Rosehill," Cavanough said. The Monstar has not raced since a last-start third in the Multiplier Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington on 4 November.

Nursery start for Irish BetAfter the colt won his debut 801-metre trial at Warwick Farm, trainer John O’Shea has said he intends to start Irish Bet (Smart Missile) in the Inglis Nursery (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday. The China Horse Club-owned two-year-old put in an impressive performance in his only trial to date, showing a smart turn of foot to beat Global Impact (Eurozone) by three and a quarter lengths.

The Art Of The Bar may miss Calaway Gal startThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained The Art Of The Bar (Charge Forward) may miss the cut for a start in the Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Doomben on Saturday. The two-year-old filly, who won her 740 metre barrier trial at Randwick last month, is 22nd on the order of entry with the field limit set at 15.

Jameka back in workMultiple Group One winner Jameka (Myboycharlie) has returned to work after a bout of travel sickness in the Autumn nearly cost her her life. The five-year-old mare was found to have the illness after travelling back to Victoria following her win in the BMW Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill in March. Owner Col McKenna has warned that, while she resembles something like her old self, there are no guarantees that mare will race again. "She is just doing light work at this stage,” McKenna told Racing.com. "She won't race this autumn but we'll see how she goes, if she doesn't get up she will head to the breeding barn next season."

Jameka’s half-sister shows promiseMeanwhile, Jameka’s half-sister Shy Talk (Shamus Award) will likely head for a spell after taking part in the second public jump out on Tuesday morning. Shy Talk impressed trainer Aaron Purcell when winning her trial at Sandown, but assistant trainer David Eustace has reservations whether she is ready to make her debut on the track. "We'll see how she comes through but the way she trialled today she probably will have a break,” Eustace told Racing.com. "It's a very competitive time of year for the two-year-olds with people kicking off for the Diamond, so the gut feel is that she's showed really good ability but she's probably not quite there yet so we'll give her a break."

See Me Exceed impresses at trialsThe Mick Price-trained See Me Exceed (Sebring) also impressed at the Sandown jump outs yesterday when she won her trial over 800 metres a performance that prompted Price to say he believed she improved since she made her winning debut at Bairnsdale in August. "She goes well, she's a nice filly. I took her to Bairnsdale, and she was very green, got out the back, no idea ... wins. Paddock," Price told Racing.com. "Ran a quick time, bolted in today [in the jump out]. She's in at Caulfield on Boxing Day in the Benchmark 3YO 1100 metes. A bit of pace on, there'll be nice horses in that race ... she should go really well. She's a nice filly. She has improved a lot since last prep."

Birchley targets Karaka Million Trainer Liam Birchley has earmarked a tilt at the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on 27 January for Magic Mystery (Per Incanto). A $170,000 purchase by L B Racing at the NZB Karaka Yearling Sale from the Little Avondale Stud draft, Magic Mystery ran second on debut at Ballina on 27 November. “Liam told me he’s hoping to get enough money at his next start to qualify,” said Sam Williams of Little Avondale Stud.

Shinn’s suspension reducedJockey Blake Shinn has had three meetings shaved off his suspension for his ride on Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) on 1

December at Canterbury, with the Racing NSW appeals panel reducing his penalty from nine to six race meetings. Shinn’s penalty, which started on 7 December, will now expire on Saturday, allowing him to ride at the Randwick meeting.

Bensley recovering after fallGoulburn-based jockey Richard Bensley was yesterday discharged from Wagga Regional Referral Hospital after a horse flipped and fell on top of him as the barriers opened on Monday at the Wagga race meeting. Bensley was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury and Racing NSW's Dr Duckworth said the jockey’s knee complaint should also improve over the next seven days. Bensley was riding the Chris Heywood-trained Fila Freckle (Bon Hoffa) in race four on Monday when the incident occurred.

Wagga meeting transferred to RiversideThe race meeting scheduled for Wagga on 22 December will be run on the inner Riverside track instead of the course proper. Murrumbidgee Turf Club officials said yesterday that the course proper, which has undergone drainage works, would not be suitable to hold the Ted Ryder Cup meeting. The change has led to a number of distance changes, with the 1600 metres races increased to 1660 metres and a Benchmark 65 Handicap reduced from 2000 metres to 1800 metres.

Infamous trainer Hayden Haitana dies aged 72Hayden Haitana, the trainer linked to the Fine Cotton (Aureo) scandal, has died in South Australia. He was 72. The expat New Zealander was at the epicentre of Australia's most infamous betting plunge, where the under-performing Fine Cotton was substituted by the better-credentialled Bold Personality (Bold Aussie) for a race at Brisbane's Eagle Farm in 1984. Bold Personality had been painted and daubed with hair dye in a bid to resemble Fine Cotton, who had been backed heavily to win. Stewards uncovered the ruse soon after the ring-in returned to scale after being first past the post. Haitana, who had lived in South Australia for several decades, died last week on the Eyre Peninsula.

Johnson’s funeral on TuesdayMourners have been asked to wear jeans, boots and a dash of purple when popular jockey Samara Johnson is farewelled at Toompang racecourse in Young. The funeral for the 25-year-old, who died in a car accident on the NSW Riverina on December 3, will be held next Tuesday. Johnson's partner, Canberra trainer Garry Kirkup remains in Canberra Hospital where he continues to recover from injuries sustained in the single vehicle accident at Eurongilly. Johnson's family have requested that in lieu of flowers, people donate to the National Jockeys Trust.

Racing Queensland welcomes new racing ministerStirling Hinchliffe was yesterday sworn in as the minister for racing in Queensland, taking over the role from Grace Grace. Racing Queensland CEO, Eliot Forbes, said he looked forward to a positive working relationship with the new minister. “I want to thank the former minister, Grace Grace, for her strong support of all codes of racing in Queensland,” said Forbes. “I worked closely with Minister Grace on the development of both a strategic and infrastructure plan and I look forward to outlining the vision for Racing Queensland to the new minister.”

Te Akau pair on course for Karaka MillionTe Akau look to have a strong pair of contenders for this season’s Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie in January, with co-trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards saying they intend to run last-start Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Al Hasa (Exceed And Excel) and the unbeaten Avantage (Fastnet Rock) at the lucrative race. “Al Hasa will go to the Eclipse Stakes on New Year’s Day and he’s just got to keep improving. We believe he will, and then it will be three and a-half weeks into the Million,” Richards said. “He’s a top class horse, one of the nicest two-year-olds I’ve sat on for quite a while. He’s a Karaka Million horse and maybe even the Golden Slipper.”

Jimmy Rea to make New Zealand debutStakes performer Jimmy Rea (Thewayyouare) will make his New Zealand debut next month, according to new trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards. A multiple winner in Singapore for premiership-winning trainer Mark Walker, the Kevin Hickman-bred and owned gelding joined the Richards and Autridge stable and had one run for the co-trainers at the Queensland winter carnival in June, finishing third in the Hinkler Quality (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben. “He’s a very good horse and he’ll have a trial and we plan to run him first-up in the Concorde on Karaka Million night,” Richards said.

Matchbreaker sold to Hong Kong

The last-start Fraser Auret-trained three-year-old Wellington Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Matchbreaker (Makfi) has been sold to Hong Kong owners. The Makfi (Dubawi) gelding won his maiden impressively at Otaki on 9 December before backing it up with a Group Three victory at the same track on 1 December, prompting lucrative offers from overseas. “It’s sad to see him go, but owner-breeder Gavin (O’Dea) has only got a handful of horses and this sort of money is a game changer,” Auret said. “You have to put it into perspective as a trainer and I was proud to have had the horse, he’s still untapped. I’m grateful to have won a Wellington Stakes with him.”

Comin’through leads Logan and Gibbs’ chargeCo-trainers Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs have nominated Comin’through (Bullbars) as their best chance in the Barfoot & Thompson Twilight Cup (1500m) at Ellerslie today. Comin’through, who will be joined in the race by stablemates Romancer (Redwood) and Toorak Tower (Toorak Toff), will be looking to make amends for his last start failure at Pukekohe. “Obviously, Comin’through is a stayer and on his way to get over more ground and it’s hard to pick one, but I’d go for him,” Gibbs said. “It was a run to put a line through, he was second up and ran like it. He’s a lot better than that and he likes Ellerslie.”

Moloney answers call to ride in New ZealandWith Jake Bayliss suspended, Patrick Moloney will return to New Zealand to ride for trans-Tasman trainer Mike Moroney, who he rides for in Australia. Moloney hasn't ridden since he was in New Zealand at the beginning of the month and will riding at Te Rapa on Saturday and Ellerslie on Sunday. "There was no pressure on me to go over," Moloney said. "Mike said I could ride them if I wanted as they're heading to bigger races if they perform up to expectations. It doesn't mean I have first call on them in the main races coming up as Jake's there as stable rider."

Per Incanto on the riseLittle Avondale studmaster Sam Williams is excited about the prospects of resident stallion Per Incanto (Street Cry) whose son Time To Celebrate won at Sha Tin on Hong Kong International Raceday on Sunday. WIlliams said Per Incanto would have 17 yearlings in the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka book one sale next month. “To do it at Sunday’s international meeting in front of pretty much all of the big owners around the world is just so important and great for us and New Zealand,” Williams said. “Per Incanto has got two very good horses in Hong Kong, apart from Time To Celebrate

there’s also Morethanlucky, who’s won three of his last four starts.”

Ruthven competes in Sha Tin trialQueensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Ruthven (Domesday) had his first public hit out since being transferred to Hong Kong from Ciaron Maher’s stable, finishing on the leaders' heels in a barrier trial at Sha Tin on Tuesday morning. Now trained by John Moore, Ruthven is being aimed at the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) and Moore said he will have one more trial next Friday before making his Hong Kong debut on New Year’s Day. "It was a good first trial, just what we were hoping to see. I was surprised by how precocious he was, really, he jumped out and was right near the speed over 1000 metres," Moore said. "I mean, he blew out late but you'd expect that, he'd had a long time off. He's a good doer, he's a big bull of a thing so it takes time to get him fit. He's right where I want him going towards the four-year-old races.”

Wings Of Desire to stand in South AfricaWings Of Desire (Pivotal), winner of the 2016 Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f), has been purchased by Heversham Park Farm in South Africa, where he will stand the 2018 breeding season. The four-year-old is a brother to Group Two winners Eagle Top and The Lark, while his Listed-winning dam Gull Wing (In The Wings) is a half-sister to dual Group One winner Sariska (Pivotal). "We have been searching for a Classic-type sire for a considerable time," Fred Brons, director of stallions at Heversham, told the Sporting Post. "The difficulty that we encountered in our search was that we did not want any hand-me-down sires, while insisting on stallion prospects that had solid pedigrees, performance and conformation.” A fee for Wings Of Desire will be announced at a later date.

Jockey Hugh Bowman’s regularly winning world-wide wanderings will continue this month and potentially take him to a racing destination he’s

yet to grace in 2018. Crowned the world’s best jockey last week,

Bowman has spent the past two days on a reconnoitre mission in Dubai before returning to Japan where he will attempt to complete the Japan Cup - Arima Kinen double on Cheval Grand (Heart’s Cry).

“I was invited to have a look around Dubai," Bowman said. "I’ve not ridden there before but I was certainly happy to take up the invitation and keep my options open for the early part of next year. Riding through the World Cup carnival would always be a possibility if good horses I’m associated with were to go.

“They might be from Australia or from Japan or Hong Kong where I’ve now been lucky enough to build a great support base."

Bowman, who’s won major races in all three countries and claimed the 2016 International Jockeys Challenge in Hong Kong, aside from being named ‘world’s best’ in the past 13 months, returns to Japan until the end of December. He’ll then visit wife Christine’s family in Ireland before an early new year resettlement in Australia.

He’s been Australia’s number one Group One rider in four of the past five seasons with an aggregate of 44 top level winners in that time. He has four Group One winners at home so far this season plus, of course, the Japan Cup. His first Group One win was Defier (Dehere) in the 2004 Doomben Cup.

Bowman has distinguished himself with his willingness to be available to the media and race club promotional teams and it’s no secret that organisers of the Longines World’s Best Jockey presentation were secretly barracking for Bowman rather than the taciturn Ryan Moore. Bowman did not disappoint with his eloquence on the night.

His Christmas Eve appearance at Nakayama, for the Arima Kinen, will have the fans pumped for what is generally reckoned to be the biggest betting turnover race in the world - hovering around US$380,000,000. The turnover on Hong Kong last Sunday was around US$200,000,000.

More than 100,000 fans will literally cram into the track despite the likely very cold weather. It’s the fans’ race with the majority of the runners selected by popular vote and in Japan, as with the Melbourne Cup or the Grand National, if you have a bet on only race a year then the Arima Kinen is the one. People queue up for days for tickets as we do with football finals.

There was no joy for Bowman in Hong Kong last Sunday but Zac Purton, with a double including the Hong Kong Cup and Nash Rawiller with his breakthrough major race in is new home, kept the Australian jockeys to the fore.

Rawiller, of course, won the Hong Kong Sprint (with the first five home AUS or NZ bred)

aboard Australian-bred Mr Stunning who was one of six Australasian bred winners on the day.

It’s been well publicised that Nash Rawiller’s father Keith had to be well and truly coerced to get to Hong Kong to see his son win the Group One sprint. Both were overjoyed. Less known is that Rawiller senior has the distinction of winning metropolitan races as a jockey and also as a trotting driver.

The New Zealand-bred Beauty Generation (Road To Rock), who raced in Australia as Montaigne and was second in the 2016 Rosehill Guineas, won the Hong Kong Mile.

But the race which generated as much interest as the internationals was the Class One with NZ-bred Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt), who raced under the same name in Australia, beating the odds-on favourite and Australian-bred Nothingilikemore (Husson), who was shooting for six straights wins.

Despite the defeat, most observers - including Caspar Fownes who trained the upset winner - rate Nothingilikemore as one of the two best emerging talents in Hong Kong. The

other is Hot King Prawn (Denman), who is also Australian-bred and also, like Nothingilikemore, prepared by John Size.

Both horses are Inglis Classic Sales graduates. Torryburn Stud sold Hot King Prawn for $90,000 to Aquanita Racing at the 2016 sale and he went to Hong Kong unraced after being prepared by Robert Smerdon. Nothingilikemore was offered by Toolooganvale Farm at the 2015 Classic Sale and bought for $40,000 by agent John Foote.

Southern Legend, offered by Columbine Stud at the 2014 Inglis Easter Yearling Sales,

was purchased for $280,000 by Neville Begg and Carmel Size. He was originally trained by Les Bridge.

Beauty Generation was bred by Nearco Stud, and offered by Highden Park at the 2014 NZB Select Sale, where he was secured by Hermes Syndications for NZ$60,000.

The Makybe bred Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) was originally sold for $110,000 at the 2013 Great Southern Sale but was on-sold at Karaka - by Lyndhurst Farm - for NZ$250,000.

Excel), the highest rated horse in Hong Kong, justified his favouritism by taking the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) by a neck under Australian rider Nash Rawiller after being prepared to perfection by nine-time champion Hong Kong trainer John Size, a Queenslander who also sent out the fast-finishing runner-up, New Zealand-bred DB Pin (Darci Brahma). Third placed Blizzard (Starcraft) is also Australian-bred. Race time was a smart 1:08.40.

Another Australian champion trainer in Hong Kong, John Moore, was also in the winner’s circle last Sunday after New Zealand-bred Beauty Generation (Road To Rock), known in Australia

as Montaigne, won the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), while Australian jockey Zac Purton piloted British-bred Time Warp (Archipenko) to an impressive victory in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). Australian bloodlines also figure prominently in the brave, Irish-bred Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Highland Reel (Galileo), whose stakes-placed dam Hveger (Danehill) is out of the outstanding producer and performer Circles Of Gold (Marscay).

Bred in Victoria by Tony Santic’s Makybe Racing and Breeding, Mr Stunning was originally sold for $110,000 as a weanling to New Zealand pinhookers Mark and Shelley Treweek of Lyndhurst Farm at the 2013 Inglis Great Southern Sale in Melbourne. The colt proved to be a profitable buy when resold for NZ$250,000 to Magnus Equine of Hong Kong at the 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale.

Mr Stunning is the 11th Group One winner for his perhaps slightly under appreciated sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill), whose progeny have won more than 250 black type races throughout the world.

Exceed And Excel, a past champion sire in Hong Kong, was champion sire in Australia in 2012/13 when he was also champion sire of two-year-olds, a title he won for a second time in 2014/15.

Darley has shuttled the former champion Australian sprinter between its Hunter Valley farm at Aberdeen and their bases in Britain and Ireland since 2005 and his achievements in the Northern Hemisphere are exceptional as his worldwide tally of stakes winners has reached 141.

Group One winners by Exceed And Excel in Australia are the successful young sires Helmet and Reward For Effort, champion fillies Guelph,

Overreach and Earthquake plus top sprinter Flamberge. Besides Mr Stunning, Exceed And Excel has supplied Group/Grade One winners in Britain (Excelebration and Margot Did), France (Excelebration, now a successful sire), the United States (Outstrip) and Dubai (Amber Sky).

Among Exceed And Excel’s sons standing at stud in Australia in 2017 are Furnaces, Headwater, Helmet, Instinction, Jabali, Kuroshio, Outreach, Reward For Effort and Sidestep, so his influence continues to extend in his home country.

Tony Santic imported Mr Stunning’s dam, US-bred With Fervour (Dayjur), to Australia in 2005 when in foal to Oasis Dream (Green Desert).

Placed twice in Paris, With Fervour (1997) had produced two foals before her arrival in Australia which went on to win in Holland and Japan and she started well here as her 2005 gelding Contrive (Oasis Dream) won three races but her next two foals, Honeymoon Cruise (Fastnet Rock) and Go The Cats (Purrealist), were unplaced. She then produced dual winner Commissar (Wanted) before the arrival of Mr Stunning.

After missing to her 2012 service by Purrealist, With Fervour was consigned to the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale, where she was bought for just $6,000 by another Victorian breeder, Dr. L.J. Oldcastle, for whom she bred the unraced filly With Faith (Mossman) before her death in October 2014.

With Fervour is a sister to French stakes winner With Fascination (Dayjur), dam of stakes winner With Interest (Selkirk) and more significantly a half-sister to With Anticipation (Relaunch), a five-time Grade One winner in the United States, while their dam Fran’s Valentine (Saros) won three Grade One tests in the United States, earning US$1,370,000.

Like a number of other recent important winners, Mr Stunning is closely (3 x 3) linebred to Danzig (Northern Dancer). His maternal grandsire Dayjur (Danzig) raced in Europe where, as a three year-old, he was champion sprinter of 1990. While somewhat disappointing as a sire of winners when based in Kentucky, Dayjur has made a far greater impact as the broodmare sire of some 56 stakes winners, eight at Group One level.
