Legein Columbus-bound■ By Herb GarbuttOAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF
When the host Columbus BlueJackets called Stefan Legein’s name inthe second round of last weekend’sNational Hockey League Entry Draft, the host fans responded with a loudovation. It’s a sound Legein hopes tohear many more times.
“It’s a dream come true. For anyonewho’s ever played hockey,it’s one of the greatestthings you could experi-ence,” Legein said. “But Iknow I’m in for a ton ofhard work now.”
The 18-year-old rightwinger was picked 37thoverall Saturday by thehost team. Twelve pickslater, the Colorado Avalanche selectedOakville’s Trevor Cann. Earlier in thedraft, the Edmonton Oilers took for-mer Oakville resident Sam Gagnersixth overall, while Justin Vaive wastaken by the Stanley Cup championAnaheim Ducks in the fourth round.
Having arrived Wednesday for thetwo-day event, Legein had a chance tofamiliarize himself with the city evenbefore finding out it would be the placehe hopes to call home some day.
And when he returns to Columbusin the fall, there will be a familiar faceto help him through his first NHL
training camp. Legein’s formerOakville Rangers teammate, goal-tender Steve Mason, was drafted byColumbus in the third round last yearand will be there to show him theropes.
“We were good friends growing upand he was down here so I got to meeta couple of the guys,” Legein said.“That will help a lot.”
While the seven-year-old Columbusfranchise may not have thehistory of some of its NHLcounterparts, Legein said itis apparent the city hasembraced hockey.
“You don’t really thinkof it as a hockey citybecause you don’t hearmuch about it,” he said.“But when you see the
arena and meet the people who make itwhat it is, they really embrace it. Theday after they picked (Jakub) Voracekin the first round, they were sellingVoracek sweaters in the stores.”
Legein hopes to see his name on theback of Columbus jerseys hanging inthe store window one day. His firstchance to make an impression on theteam will also be when he gets his firsttaste of international experience, ashe’ll suit up for the Canadian U-20team in the upcoming Canada/RussiaSuper Series (Legein will be joined by
Gagner, Cann, Vaive also picked in NHL draft
“It’s a dreamcome true. But Iknow I’m in fora ton of hardwork now.”
