The 25-year- old Wilson became the first female jockey in the race's 148-year history to capture the gold trophy, while Mike Fox, a 15:1 long- shot, earned his fourth victory in eight career starts and earned his biggest payday ($600,000). GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER Legein Columbus-bound By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF When the host Columbus Blue Jackets called Stefan Legein’s name in the second round of last weekend’s National Hockey League Entry Draft, the host fans responded with a loud ovation. It’s a sound Legein hopes to hear many more times. “It’s a dream come true. For anyone who’s ever played hockey, it’s one of the greatest things you could experi- ence,” Legein said. “But I know I’m in for a ton of hard work now.” The 18-year-old right winger was picked 37th overall Saturday by the host team. Twelve picks later, the Colorado Avalanche selected Oakville’s Trevor Cann. Earlier in the draft, the Edmonton Oilers took for- mer Oakville resident Sam Gagner sixth overall, while Justin Vaive was taken by the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round. Having arrived Wednesday for the two-day event, Legein had a chance to familiarize himself with the city even before finding out it would be the place he hopes to call home some day. And when he returns to Columbus in the fall, there will be a familiar face to help him through his first NHL training camp. Legein’s former Oakville Rangers teammate, goal- tender Steve Mason, was drafted by Columbus in the third round last year and will be there to show him the ropes. “We were good friends growing up and he was down here so I got to meet a couple of the guys,” Legein said. “That will help a lot.” While the seven-year-old Columbus franchise may not have the history of some of its NHL counterparts, Legein said it is apparent the city has embraced hockey. “You don’t really think of it as a hockey city because you don’t hear much about it,” he said. “But when you see the arena and meet the people who make it what it is, they really embrace it. The day after they picked (Jakub) Voracek in the first round, they were selling Voracek sweaters in the stores.” Legein hopes to see his name on the back of Columbus jerseys hanging in the store window one day. His first chance to make an impression on the team will also be when he gets his first taste of international experience, as he’ll suit up for the Canadian U-20 team in the upcoming Canada/Russia Super Series (Legein will be joined by Gagner, Cann, Vaive also picked in NHL draft “It’s a dream come true.
