event in early June.

Well done to the following players who represented the South Coast at the CHS

carnival coming in 5th place: Eliza Cowan, Natalina Liberti, Christina Barraza, Ursula

Bratjanscak and Lulu Lozano. In additional these girls played in the Invitational team

that came a very credible 7th place out of 12 teams, Holly Lewis, Sienna Humphrey,

Tanika Sharrock and Tahlia Mackay.

Well done to the following boys for representing South Coast at CHS Rugby carnival

in Dubbo, Nathaniel Malaki, Dylan Lucas, Reece Apolo, Tremane Malafu, Baxter Kane

and Cayden Collis.

Well done to our cross country team at the recent zone carnival, with great success

from: Nickolas Pozzer, Chisholm Brown, Dale Heatherington, Flynn Madden, Nikola

Uzelac, Blake Hasler, Sienna Stuart, Deacon Waine and Jackson Luke. Well done to

all students in Years 7 to 10 who recently undertook a series of problem, team and

academic challenge activities to enhance their 21st century learning skills.

The soccer pitch is taking further shape with the new goalposts in place to complement

the improved surface and enclosed fence. Additional drainage work has been

completed to ensure improved ground playing surface. The irrigation system is

progressing during 2018.

The school has been requested to review our entering and leaving the school process

for all students. This is due to reviews of safety aspects in all NSW schools about car

movements on school grounds. All students need to enter and exit at the front of the

school via our student gates beside the hall and not via the front driveway gates. The

two carparks in the school are for staff parking only. All visitors to the school need to

please park in the streets around our school, then report to the front office to sign our

visitor’s book. Thanks for your support in these matters.

I am looking forward to supporting and working with every student in his or her

education journey in 2018 and years to come.

How2Learn

This year four of our staff (Ms Cracknell, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Hannon and Mr Hood) have been busy attending and then facilitating training for a program called How2Learn. This program is being introduced into our school gradually and the focuses of this program are to ensure we, as staff, are developing our students to be lifelong learners, to be self-aware of their learning and share a belief that intelligence is learnable and expandable. All teachers at Illawarra Sports High School are undertaking this Professional Learning. There are 4 main parts to this learning and these rocks symbolise what we will be focusing on as teachers of 21st century learners.

One of the first things we are going to introduce to our students is the Power of Yet:

If you can be talking to your child/ren about this at home, it will really help us with having our students engage with the idea. Strong home-school partnerships are important to the development and education of all of our students.

Watch this space to find out how you can continue to help your child learn to learn.

Around the grounds This month has seen a very busy month around the grounds at Illawarra Sports High School. Our TAS Department has a few new additions. Last year students from the TAS department built a chicken coop. Mr Davies has brought in each day some of his chickens from home for the students to work with at school during the day. ISHS will be purchasing their own chickens very shortly. A lot of our students are finding the chickens very relaxing and working in the coop helping to feed and clean the chicken coop out. The chickens teach the students valuable skills in showing compassion and caring for others as well as the learning needs of sustainability and food from farms to the shop. Also in TAS the WRAP students have been very busy upgrading our vegetable and herb gardens. Mulch has been spread around the grounds to alleviate weeds and the vegetables are going to be harvested to use in our cooking practicals here at school. Our Aboriginal Education Centre has been busy upgrading their gardens and area where smoking ceremonies are conducted. Students have been busy each day working alongside our Aboriginal school learning officer, Kane in keeping the gardens watered, weeded and pruned. They are working on putting down some stepping stones which will be painted to reflect Aboriginal culture. As this garden progresses, I will update with more photos. Our newly fenced soccer field is complete. We have the irrigation and drainage systems finished and the field is ready to have the lines painted on. Students have been using the fields and are impressed with the ground surfaces and their new soccer goals. Our next project is to improve the gardens in K Block and possibly look at putting in a new pond area. The marine studies students have been working on some ideas and are hoping to create a series of cascading ponds incorporating flora and fauna. As this progresses, I will advise of further information. The bush area between the library and the car park is being cleaned up and the mulch from the removal of the tree behind the library was used in the TAS vegetable and herb garden. Unfortunately, our basketball court is out of action for the time being until we update our backboards as they are deemed to be unsafe. I will work as quickly as possible to have this court back in use as soon as possible. I apologise for the inconvenience caused to students who use this court regularly. In the hall, we now have our new school honour board on display. It is an update from the old wooden style and is displaying our current captain’s names on it. That’s a wrap up from me and more to follow next month. Sharon Seeney Business Manager

Netflix - 13 REASONS WHY

Headspace and Netflix have collaborated to develop the following information that

may be helpful for viewers of the show and the wider community. It can be helpful to

use the show as an opportunity to talk with your young person about topics that may

otherwise go unspoken. The information below aims to assist parents engage in

healthy conversations about some of the issues addressed in 13 Reasons Why. It

also includes some suggestions for how to respond to these appropriately and spur

productive discussions around these themes.

Tips for discussing the show safely:

Do some research and get informed about the show - try to watch Consider if it is age appropriate Try to have discussions about the show when all people are feeling calm Talk about your reasons for concern Understand their desire to watch the series. Understanding their point of

view doesn’t mean agreeing with them but it may help to keep the conversation going

Important points to remember:

Some people may be distressed by some of the themes in the series, while others are not. This will depend on individual life experiences and current circumstances. It is important to be respectful of other people’s experiences.

Remember, this is TV, dramatized for viewer engagement, designed to entertain. This season endeavours to present challenging issues in a meaningful way, to acknowledge the experiences young people may go through. The characters may not be realistic representations for every viewer.

Unfortunately, the themes explored in this series are far too common among young people. You may not be aware if your young person or their peers have had experiences similar to those of the characters in the series. Having open conversations can help to know when further support is necessary, but there are also other signs to look out for (covered below). It can help to keep this in mind in the days and weeks during and after your young person is exposed to the show (through peers or by watching).

If you and your young person decide to watch the series, it might be useful to consider some of the following:

Find out what content is coming up at 13ReasonsWhy.info Take breaks and do soothing things between episodes (for example; go

for a walk, share a meal with someone, do some exercise, spend time with friends)

Ensure they watch with a support person or watch it together

Identify what episodes or themes are likely to be more difficult. Then, agree on whether to skip this part, or write a list of things that are likely to help. These are likely to be the same things that help a person uses to cope in other stressful situations

Know where to go for professional support if this becomes necessary and support them to get professional care. There is a list of professional support options below

Model good self-care behaviours Remember to keep checking in with them

If you are concerned about your young person, please do not hesitate to call school and speak to one of our very experienced school counsellors to receive advice and support.

Happy Snap Challenge

Selected Year 5 students from each of the Berkeley Community of Schools primary

schools (Farmborough Road, Berkeley West, Berkeley Public School and

Unanderra) participated in a two day photography workshop at Illawarra Sports High

School at the end of last term. During these workshops students learnt practical

skills in photography and created two photography artworks (some of which are

shown in the photos). It was a great opportunity for these primary school students to

experience high school life and routines.

A big thankyou to Mr Kanaris for sharing his love of photography with our visiting

students and organising the very engaging workshops that were thoroughly enjoyed

by everyone.

HOW CYBERSMART ARE YOU

Some tips to remember:

• Make sure there is no response to rude or harassing emails (keep a record in case of further

investigation)

• immediately exit any site that makes you feel uncomfortable or worried.

• If harassment continues….your current email account can be deleted and a new one started. Your

new email address should only be given to a selected few.

• If receiving harassing messages on social media – block the person.

• PC’s SHOULD be in a common area of the house NOT IN THE BEDROOM!

• As a parent you should know what your children are doing online.

• Do not have ‘suggestive’ or ‘flirty’ log on names.

• NEVER allow explicit photos of yourself to be taken in ANY circumstance

• If you have found inappropriate content about yourself on a website or are informed about this

situation please contact the ISP and or Police or tell your parents to do so ASAP

• As parents learn about the internet • Let your parents know where you go online, just as you would

in real life.

• Make sure your computer has a good filter and other monitoring/blocking software to minimise

dangers.

• Make sure you are on safe and suitable sites. Filters CAN sometimes fail to protect.

• There should be house rules about what information you can put onto websites or share with others.

• Remember that the internet is PERMANENT….be mindful of what you post and how you portray

yourself. Pics etc. can remain FOREVER

• Learn the language of the cyberspace.

• DO NOT EXCHANGE PERSONAL INFORMATION ONLINE!

• Social Networking profiles such as Facebook etc. SHOULD BE SET TO PRIVATE.

• Social networking site friends should be people that you know in real life. This is one way to reduce

possible risks. (An ‘online friend’ that you don’t know in real life is a STRANGER).

• Passwords MUST NOT BE SHARED!!!!! Choose passwords that others can’t guess. Should be a

mix of caps/letters/numbers/symbols.

• Change passwords 4 times per year (last day of every term)

• Be aware that information on the internet is not always reliable.

• Misuse of the internet and associated technology (bullying/harassing someone) is a crime don’t

break the law and risk getting a criminal record.

• Learn how search engines work. The first website returned may not be the best.

Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive and that there is no guarantee that adherence to

these tips will provide 100% protection or safety for those using the various applications of the

internet.

CAL BRUTON BASKETBALL CLINIC

On Monday 7th May, Cal Bruton (one of the greatest imports to grace the National

Basketball League in Australia as a player, as well as having a distinguished career

as a coach) visited Illawarra Sports to work out with our basketball boys. Cal is also

an NBL Hall of Famer. His years of playing and coaching were soaked up by our

boys who enjoyed a full day of coaching from one of the best! We were also lucky

enough to have Joe Farrugia (the first NBL Hawks Coach) come and talk to us about

some basketball history in the Illawarra.

Talented Academic Program The ISHS TAP students have been very busy since the start of Term 2, participating in a range of academic programs and competitions. On Thursday the 3rd of May and Tuesday the 8th of May TAP students from years 7-10 participated in a 21st century workshop hosted by Mr Wassink and Miss Dimilia. In the workshops the students were taught a range of communication, collaboration and creative thinking skills to prepare them for the jobs of the future. Students were required to complete a range of challenges such as building the tallest tower out of a deck of cards or figuring out the numbered paper plate’s challenge. Thank you to Mr Wassink for his assistance in organising such a rewarding experience for the TAPS students. On the 10th of May two TAP teams of Year 7 and 8 students travelled to TIGS to compete in the Da Vinci Decathlon against other schools from the Illawarra and Southern Highlands. The students were required to complete a range of academic challenges and use their creative thinking skills to perform a 60 second dramatic performance. Our school performed very well in these challenges and the students should be proud of their efforts. On the 17th of May the Year 9 and 10 debating team versed Albion Park High School for the Premiers Debating Challenge. They were the affirmative team on the debate topic "Teachers should have the right to search a student’s bag" and put forward some fantastic arguments. The team won the debate and are now onto the next round against another local high school!! Well done to these students, I am very proud! Carrin Dimilia

We are advising that no energy drinks be brought to school.

Any student with an energy drink will be asked to have it left with a teacher and have

it returned at the end of the day.

Reasons why:

The excessive caffeine and sugar impairs student’s ability to think in class and increases irritation.

Decays teeth

Puts students a risk of diabetes

They have been linked to negative behaviours in the classroom

Lacks any nutritional value.

Volunteering

Once a month CareSouth hosts a community dinner with the help of staff and students from Illawarra Sports High School. They volunteer their services and create a delicious, nutritious meal for those that attend.

Carrin Dimilia, Year 8 Advisor says of their volunteering, "Volunteering has taught us the joy that giving back to the community can bring. We leave every Meet and Eat night feeling like our efforts have truly made a difference to someone’s day, and that really makes us feel great! Every person that we serve is so grateful for the food that we produce and so genuinely happy to see what delicious creations we have come up with. It has taught the students to show compassion and has really been a very rewarding experience for us all."

This month on SchoolTV -

Eating Disorders

Understanding an eating disorders can be difficult for families. There are many myths around what causes an eating disorder, but it is actually diagnosed as a mental illness. Although the focus is on food, weight and shape, there is often an underlying issue being masked by the eating disorder. It is the biggest killer of any psychiatric illness for young people. It affects both males and females of any age or background. An eating disorder is a serious and potentially life-threatening mental health illness. It can have significant physical and emotional effects. The beginning of adolescence and late teens are peak periods for kids to experience their first symptoms. Young people with eating disorders can have reductions in cognitive function, emotional changes and may even stop participating in their normal daily activities. In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn what warning signs to look for and what can be done in the prevention of an eating disorder. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information. Illawarra Sports High students prepare to

head to Japan for One Nation Cup with

Sydney FC Academy

Japan bound: Liam Hoyn (left), Thomas Cleverly and Tony Krstevski will fly out to Shonan with the Sydney FC Academy side. Picture: Georgia Matts.

Illawarra Sports High School’s partnership with Sydney FC will deliver its first major opportunity when five students travel to Japan as part of a Sydney FC Academy squad.

The boys, Liam Hoyn, Thomas Cleverly, Tony Krstevski, Flynn Madden and Jayden Bojlevski, will represent the Sydney FC Academy at the One Nation Cup in Shonan, where they will face off against teams from around the world, including South Africa, Germany, Turkey and Russia.

“It’s very exciting for all the boys that are going,” Cleverly said. “It’s going to be such a great experience for everyone involved.”

Held every two years, the competition aims to develop ties between football playing nations and help junior players experience different cultures from around the world. The competition hopes to enable players to form genuine bonds despite their different nationalities.

The 14-year-old said he’s looking forward to testing his skills against different styles of play and strategies that Australian teams typically don’t utilise.

“I’m probably most looking forward to seeing how everyone else plays from all the other countries and the different styles of football that they play.

“Hopefully I can catch the names of some of the other players because you never know, they could be the next big thing.”

The partnership with Sydney FC, which was launched last October, provides Illawarra Sports High students with the opportunity to train alongside some of Sydney’s most talented juniors under the tutelage of Sydney FC’s collection of experienced coaches.

Illawarra Sports High’s inclusion in the program offers players the same benefits provided to students at renowned sports high schools including Endeavour Sports High.

It’s a setup that has received rave reviews from all involved.

“It’s a family community at Sydney FC, so everyone’s been involved,” Cleverly said. “We’ve had access to some good coaches who are in the set up, so it has been a good opportunity.”
