It will be a young team that takes the floor for the women’s basketball team in the 2011 season, but one that has talent and hopes of again being one of the top teams in the Com-monwealth Coast Conference (CCC).

The women’s basketball team is in the midst of a streak of seven consecutive winning seasons. In that span, they have been to the finals of the CCC tournament twice but are still looking for their first conference title and NCAA tournament appear-ance. The Gulls have made appear-ances in the ECAC tournament in each of these last seven years.

Last year saw the Gulls have an-other successful season, compiling a record of 17-10 overall and 10-3 in the CCC. That was enough to earn them the #4 seed and a home game in the first round of the conference tourna-ment, but Endicott was upset by Regis College by a slim 56-54 score. After a first round win in the ECAC tournament, the Gulls again suffered an almost identically heartbreaking loss, falling 55-54 in the semifinals to the University of Southern Maine.

There are just seven returning players from that 2010 squad, only two of which were regular starters. This year’s squad is made up of five second-year players, one junior and one senior. Together those players earned 54 spots in the starting lineup a season ago. Two new sophomores and five freshmen will also join to complete the Gulls’ 2011 roster.

“The freshmen and sophomores are going to get a lot of exposure and experience right off the bat,” said first year head coach Brittany Hutchinson. “They will be held to a higher standard than usual for younger players and have responded well already in the preseason.”

Hutchinson took over the reins of the Gulls’ program last spring after

serving as an assistant coach for two years. Prior to coming to Beverly, Hutchinson was an assistant coach at Little East Conference power-house Eastern Connecticut State University.

“Having a young team is some-times better when you have a new coach comes in,” said Hutchinson. “They are able to see eye-to-eye about the goals and system for the team.”

Those goals include continuing to be one of the top teams in the conference and playing a tough non-conference schedule. Hutchinson wants to elevate the team’s level of play and compete against teams that are better, faster and stronger than them. The team’s plan is to excel with their speed and to win by being quicker and better conditioned. “The intention is to wear teams down,” said the first year coach, who said a lot of emphasis is being put on press-ing and fast breaks.

Endicott will have a difficult time replacing the scoring potency of last year’s offense, after losing all three of their key contributors from a sea-son ago. Ashley Wright, who aver-aged over 18 points and 4 rebounds a game and Ashley Vitale, who aver-aged 14 points and 7 rebounds are both members of the Endicott 1,000 point club. Brittany Kelleher (8 rebounds, 6 points a game) was the leading rebounder last year with 221 boards.

Hutchinson and the Gulls will look to a strong sophomore class for offensive production. Forward Samantha Crough is a crafty, inside-out player who averaged almost six points a game last year, while Jen White averaged four points for the Gulls. Guard Ashley Walenta contrib-uted just under five points a game and had thirty assists. According to

Hutchinson, Walenta’s threat is her great outside shot combined with her ability to slash to the basket.

The Gulls have lost a lot of their inside game as well, with the loss of Kelleher and Vitale, who combined for forty blocks a year ago. Endicott will look to Crough and sophomore forward Jordan Fer-land, who each had 8 blocks last year, while Ferland also average a few rebounds and three points a game.

“With a smaller line-up you have to be smarter, especially concern-ing rebounds,” said Hutchinson. “There is a lot of focus on boxing out, rather than getting into jumping contests with other teams when you have smaller post players.”

The two returning upperclassmen are guards and co-captains Jen McBrien and Nicole Heff ernan. Heff ernan, who had 77 assists last year to lead the team, averaged 3.5 points a game, but it is really her poise and leadership that the Gulls will need most. She is a very level-headed player and has a calming infl uence on the court. Hef-fernan doesn’t lose her cool and younger players look up to that, according to her coach. “Heff ernan leads by example. She is always hustling and does the little things that make a diff erence.”

On the other side, junior guard Jen McBrien is fi ery, vocal, and very competitive. “She and Heff ernan balance each other out very well on the court,” says Hutchinson. McBrien shot .411 from the fi eld last season, averaging over three points a game and dishing out 44 assists.

For the fi rst time this season, the Gulls will get two cracks at each of their opponents in the regular season. With the CCC reduced from 14 to 10 teams, each team will play their other nine conference opponents both on the road and on their home court.

While it reduces the number of non-conference contests that she can schedule, Coach Hutchinson is excited about this change of schedule, noting that the focus is on the right place, which is on contests within the conference.

Brittany Hutchinson - Head CoachDirector of Athletics Brian Wylie and the Endicott Athletics Department formally announced that they will

welcome Brittany Hutchinson as the new head coach for the Gulls women’s basketball program. “Coach Hutchinson brings us tremendous amount of passion, enthusiasm, and a true belief of the Endicott mission,” said Wylie. “In the two short years she has been at Endicott, she has provided an imprint of excellence, leadership and respect among the student-athletes she has coached and the greater Endicott community.”

Hutchinson, an assistant coach at Endicott for the past two seasons and a former assistant at Little East Conference powerhouse Eastern Connecticut State University, is poised to lead the Blue and Green into the future as a mainstay at the top of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) standings.

“I am very excited about this opportunity and I am looking forward to becoming a bigger part of the Endicott community,” said Hutchinson.

Hutchinson takes over a Gulls program that has a 253-213 overall record (.543 win percentage) in 18 years including seven straight seasons with at least 17 wins. Endicott has had tremendous regular season success against conference opponents during that time span, compiling an 85-16 record. The Gulls, however, are in search of their fi rst TCCC title in program history.

Under Hutchinson’s guidance and leadership as an assistant coach over the past two seasons, Endicott has gone 36-18 (21-5 TCCC), fi n-ished second and third, respectively, in the TCCC regular season standings, and earned bids into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. Five student-athletes were named to the All-TCCC Team, three of those players eclipsed the 1,000-career point barrier within the past two years, and one was named TCCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as a Capital One Academic All-District First Team honoree.

Looking ahead to the 2011-12 academic and athletic year, Hutchinson is confi dent in Endicott’s prospects towards the future. “We have recruited a talented incoming freshman class,” said Hutchinson. “We have a wonderful group of impactful, returning players who have laid a solid foundation for future success and we expect to continue the winning tradition of Endicott women’s basketball.”

Along with her head coaching responsibilities, Hutchinson will provide support for Endicott’s contest management staff which will organize, schedule, and supervise all of the Gulls varsity athletic events.
