To walk out on to Cedars Field with the stunning view of Wells Cathedral cannot fail to inspire.

The new sports pavilion will be a major benefit to the school. It is widely accepted that our First XI square is one of the finest school cricket pitches in the county. A pavilion would set us apart, making it a truly inspirational place for current students and those of the future.

Every child should be taught to read, to write, to sing and to move. Sport is vital as we are teaching physical literacy, helping them develop their range of life skills and improving their quality of life for years to come.

The importance of encouraging children to participate in sport has never been greater. Help us share the joy of sport with today’s students and future generations.

Martin SwarfieldDirector of Sport Wells Cathedral School

T he sports pavilion will be part of an innovative new complex on Cedars Field at Wells Cathedral School.

Designed by award-winning architect Eric Parry it will include two changing rooms on the lower floor, with separate changing facilities for referees, showers and lots of room for kit storage.

The upper level, which will be accessible via a lift, will include spectator seating with stunning views across Cedars Field and a meeting reception room with bar.

On match days the reception room will be used to provide light snacks with drinks and lunch for up to 30 people. In the evening it will be a space where players and friends can relax and socialise.

It will also serve as a headquarters for Old Wellensians where former students will be able to enjoy meetings and social gatherings.

During term time the reception area will provide additional teaching space where, especially during winter months, the sports department can provide a variety of activities, including pilates and yoga, to encourage even more students to discover the joy of sport participation.

The new sports pavilion will replace those metal containers on Cedars Field currently used for changing in the summer months! It cannot come a moment too soon.

Built to Sport England Guidance Standards, the sports pavilion will be built with materials which complement the character of Wells and will be completed with naturally-finished timber.

As a parent who saw four sons through the school between 1985 and 2005, I remember how ambitious they were to talk up sport more at Wells.

The new pavilion, offering a state-of-the-art home to all sports across all ages and both sexes, as well as facilities for the local community, is long overdue. It will provide a real focus for sport. It will underline the importance of sport to all who come to the school.

With its outstanding design, it will provide first class sporting facilities to all first and second team players and give a real sense of achievement to those who use its facilities.

It will also be the HQ for the Old Wellensian Association which will find a proper home for its members and supporters for the first time. We’ve already raised over 40% of our £600,000 target - with your support, we will be able to cross the finishing line sooner rather than later.

Phil Lemanski - ChairmanPavilion Fundraising Committee

Y ou can help us deliver this long-awaited and much-anticipated sporting asset to the school community by joining those who have already committed a gift to the pavilion project.

Please consider making a donation to help us reach our target which stands at £600,000. A number of individuals have already helped us raise more than £250,000 - now we need your support to finish the job.

All donations of whatever size will help raise this building, and we will recognise everyone who donates on a permanent Roll of Thanks within the finished pavilion.

If you can help with a major gift, there are also naming opportunities below and the Foundation office will be delighted in discussing with you how your donation can be recognised in perpetuity. All gifts can be made as a single gift or donated by Direct Debit over a longer period.

Join the team today who will realise the dream. Wells needs a sports pavilion; we intend to build one.

We’d like to invite gifts to complete the sports pavilion development. Whatever the size of your donation it will be a welcomed and valued contribution which will be appreciated for generations.

We welcome single gifts, or regular gifts by Direct Debit and, for those of you who might be attracted by a naming opportunity, we have identified a small number of significant areas of the building which offer themselves as bespoke gift opportunities. Please let us know if you’re interested in this limited opportunity.

We enclose a giving chart demonstrating the added value of Gift Aid:

The volunteer members of the pavilion committee:

We are profoundly grateful to a number of individuals who have supported our vision through an important silent fundraising phase.

”“There can be few more

attractive places to bat than on Cedars Field facing a bowler from the Cathedral end.

In the 1990s a new First XI cricket ground was created and a County-standard square was laid producing

an ambience in which any cricketer would delight to play. Cricket matches, however, need pavilions and this appeal seeks to furnish a long-awaited jewel in the Cedars crown.

Imaginative designs envisage much more than a place for cricketers to change and this building will provide additional facilities for both current and former pupils.

John Baxter - HeadWells Cathedral School 1986-2000

When I arrived at Wells Cathedral School as an 11-year-old my passion for sport was already deeply rooted.

But the encouragement I received at Wells

helped me develop and go on to win a gold medal as part of the British Olympic Modern Pentathlon team in Montreal in 1976.

I have the great honour to be Wells Cathedral School’s highest achieving Old Wellensian in the world of sport and am proud to be patron of the sports pavilion appeal.

For the past 22 years I have worked as a physical education teacher, helping young people discover the joy of sport.

It is vital in a child’s development to give them the opportunity to try as many different sports as possible. For a young person to excel at sport the joy of participation must first be there and is then nurtured with encouragement and support.

To develop those children with innate talent, and to encourage all children to love sport, they need the best facilities. The sports pavilion will provide just that.
